Cromer Tunnel & East Runton Viaduct Disused Railway Explore
In the little seaside town of Cromer, there is a little Railway History that some locals know nothing about. For one reason or another, Cromer Tunnel has been hiding away for decades. Unknown by many due to it's closure many decades ago or parts of the railways around being built upon.
A little over 50 metre's in length, Cromer Tunnel is little gem.
Before finding the tunnel, we have a little look at the site of Cromer High Station.
Moving on, we walk towards East Runton insearch of the abandoned Brick Viaduct alongside the existing active Railway Viaduct as it is today.

Sutch a shame this work of art is left forgotten, surly it could be into a decent cycle path or even a railway once again. As for the viaduct, a great example of quality Victorian engineering, thanks for sharing.
It is a lovely little thing and I agree it's ashame it looks destined to stay lost 😟
Thank you for watching 🙂
The Navvies did such beautiful brickwork. A real work of art.
It Is a lovely little tunnel 😀
Brickwork fascinates me but I know hee-haw about it. A couple of interesting things I noticed: in the tunnel, we were looking at the end of the bricks. They seemed to be laid perpendicular to the track, rather than horizontally along it. Then, under the viaduct, quite a bit of the brickwork was diagonal - looked quite unusual. All interesting stuff and it takes a special kind of cretin to daub it with mindless gibberish.
@@2H80vids I am just guessing, but maybe the bricks laid end-on are stitching together an inner layer of bricks?
@@steadyred1832 Possibly, they seemed to cover quite a large area though.
Been to Cromer numerous times and never even knew that there was a tunnel. A great video with scenery and history thrown in.
My step father lived in Sheringham then Cromer for 68 years never knew of it's existence. It's a hidden gem 😀
Hi Ant, Great video and tunnel, I just love the blue bricks. I just am impressed with the construction of the viaduct and they are still standing without Rebar, Thanks again for the video
Hi trekking and towpaths I just started to watch your videos keep up with the good videos and will be looking at the rest of your videos All the best from John in lowestoft Suffolk
I John, thanks for stopping by. Thanks so much for your kind comment 😊
Great vlog Ant and as you say great structures. That blue brickwork and the way the bricks have been laid is a true monument to the skill of the builders. Enjoyed the perspective from under the viaducts. Many thanks.
It's a lovely little thing and I can't see it going anytime soon. It's just so hidden. Those two Viaducts sit nicely together. Thanks for watching 🙂
Yet another good little film nice one!
Glad you enjoyed it Matthew :)
Excellent video. Passed over the A149 bridge many times when on day trips to Cromer and Sheringham whilst visiting my dad who now lives in Norwich. so many old railways in Norfork!
It's a lovely area. I'll be back for more I believe Norwich City Station and the Marriott Way line should be the next visit. Thanks for watching 🙂
Great video, walk past the tunnel often and for some reason always look over.
A Cromer friend of mine used to use the Norfolk & Suffolk Rail, Poppy Line train from 1948 to 1953 to go to Paston Grammar School, North Walsham, catching the train at Cromer Links Halt. He said the line closed on the 6th April 1953 with a Farewell ceremony. His father was a train driver based at Cromer High Station and held a senior position there. Cromer high closed to passengers I believe in Sept 1954 and finally to freight trains in March 1960.
Cromer High was a busy station in the Summer months bringing visitors on direct express trains from Liverpool Street Station, London. As boys, we would go there to get train numbers and empty cigarette packets which we saved in those days.
another excellent video👍 so sad to see these abandoned railways that were once used
Thanks for doing this lovely vlog.
My Mother-in-Law thoroughly enjoyed it as well, as she was born and raised in Cromer.
She lived there between 1942 & 1958 and could remember all of the different items that you videoed and found old photo's of.
It certainly brought good memories back to her.
Hello Roy I'm pleased you both enjoyed it. It's a lovely area and I'm pleased with both of the Cromer films 😀
I'll be Back over that way in September I think to do more
"If we're only going to build one of these tunnels let's make sure it'll last forever!!!" Must be the best abandoned tunnel in the country, looks like new. How I'd like to step into those B & Ws. You walking on the shingle at the end reminded me of The Who Quadrophenia soundtrack - anyone else? Nice find Ant👍👌❤
I've still never seen that film and I've had numerous people suggest I need to 😂
It's a good one, short but mighty 🙂
@@TrekkingExploration Youngster!!! 😃😃😃 Film is weird. Album, headphones, volume up, that's the best way 💿🎸🎧🔊👌
Totally brilliant. Keep these railway finds coming
Another great video. Thanks buddy for the update today. Your the best, Ant! Cheers mate.
Wow nice intro 🧐 watching now 😎. I served on HMS Cromer when I was in the military.
Interesting video chap many thanks. I like your opening title it reminds me of Robert Murray Smiths video intros. I love finding all sorts of railway relics too.
It's a lovely little thing hidden down there. Those are the best sort 🙂
Thank you for watching and commenting 🙂
A very interesting video, I love it when explore and find something new (old). Keep up the great videos.
It was lovely to go somewhere a bit further from home especially as lovely as Cromer. Thanks for watching and commenting 🙂
Another brilliant video Ant, so lucky to live here,🤗 x
I finally got it on after a second visit 😂
A very good video and information, Thankyou. Many folk in the area would not be aware of the rail tunnel under the nearby old Cromer High Station. I believe there is a small book by Constance Rothery titled 'The Poppyland Flyer' which is about the line from North Walsham - Mundesley - Overstrand - Sheringham. I remember travelling the line as a boy and how the train would go so slowly on that route.
Enjoyed that with my cold beer, thanks Ant. I’m amazed the local council hasn’t done more with the tunnel and viaduct, such as a walking trail or bike path. Doesn’t look much work to put some steps or a ramp in and connect them to the rest of the footpath network.
It was worth the wait then 😀
It would be nice if it could be used somehow it's in fantastic condition I thought 👍
Thanks for the video some great shots of the blue brick tunnel and great to see the cable holders. The mortar base really good to see as I like to see finds from the war. Such a beautiful viaduct so much credit to its builders and great to see the ballast still there. 😎🚃🚃🚂🇬🇧
its amazing to think that Mortor Bae has been there a good 80 years now. Thanks for watching :)
they should clear all the rubbish and open it up to walk down
Thanks.
I discovered this tunnel a number of years back and it's held its structure very well, I drive over that road bridge every day to work which is next to cromer station as we know it today. If you get chance further down the line, you can find signs of overstrand station and can see the cutting where the railway was along the main road for Overstrand (outside the church is the best place to see it). You can kind of see how the track plan around east runton would look from the caravan site nearby and when you go towards sheringham today, you can see where the track use to exist to head over the abandoned viaduct
Overstrand station is actually mostly complete, you can even see the passenger tunnel to the island platform, but it's on private land. There is a footpath though from which you can get a pretty decent view.
@@siw1077 I'll have to take a peak from the footpath, not seen the station in person
I'm actually toying with the idea of walking the entire route as best i can to North Walsham. Some sections appear walkable, others have vanished. As you say the station locations are worth a visit, i have spotted a few remote bridges on google maps too
As a school boy in late 1940s I travelled through that tunnel. Trains from London used to stop near Gunton and split, the front portion going into Cromer Beach and the rear into Cromer High. Another loco backed onto the rear portion and took it into Cromer High. Then the loco looped round to the front and drew the train out using the curve round to Sheringham. Sometimes the train split at North Waltham with he front for Cromer Beach and the rear for Trimingham, Mundersley, Overstrand, Cromer High then Sheringham. Those were the days of leisurely travel; I’ve been on the route a few times.
Great work, loved it!
Thanks a lot! This was an amazing little place :)
Another great explore. I don't remember seeing cable holders in such good nic as they were. Thank you Ant :-)
Thank you as always. It was lovely to step out of the Midlands for a little while 😀
Wow Ant that was fabulous. Loved the bridges, especially the blue one the brickwork was fantastic. Loved the viaduct too such a shame they can’t all be looked after and used. Wonderful how you showed us over wall and train came down that was fabulous. Thank you so much for taking me along just loved it. Please stay safe
Hello 🙂 I'm really pleased you enjoyed you're visit with me. It's a lovely area and I'm looking at going back that way in September 😀
That will be fantastic
There is other tunnel in Norfolk but is smaller. On the Bure Valley Railway near Aylsham the A140 crosses the line.
I'd like to have a ride on this sometime soon :)
As well as the former Barsham tunnel that was opened out.
The footpath you walked up at the start was the access road to the station
Like your vids keep them coming
Thanks John :)
That was a very nice intro, the foam stuff looked like something from Doctor Who!! The brickwork on the tunnel and the viaduct looked as good as new, very impressive. It's a shame there was nothing left of the old station, that would have been a great find.
That foam, I got that in November the first time I went and had to use it 😂
It was nice to stretch my legs out of the usual areas I cover and I'm hoping to go back later this year 😀
@@TrekkingExploration From memory there are a few disused lines in Norfolk with old stations still standing.
I missed it by a year. In the Fifties BR ran a schools special train from Sheringham to North Walsham via Cromer Beach and Mundesley to serve the town's two grammar schools, and my first year at the school was the first year they didn't use the tunnel as that bit of the line closed, but went via Gunton instead. Nevertheless the older pupils used to relate some gruesome tales about "what happened in the tunnel". A year later Cromer High closed and all trains used Cromer Beach.
Great video... You definitely need a drone to film those unreachable bits! 😀
Not Norfolks only tunnel, Norfolk had a another tunnel a few miles north of Fakenham, but it was opened out to form a cutting many years ago, Barsham tunnel was opened out in 1912. Google Barsham Tunnel......
East Runton my home village. I’ve been up that bridge loads.
Lovely bleak East Anglian music! What gets me is the beauty of it all, cast aside at the stroke of a pen pusher's biro.
Cromer High only shut because it was a long way from the town so all trains diverted to the current Cromer station which was served by the M&GN
It's quite a hill up to the station site too, not overly steep but quite long
Quite a big reason for it to shut. Beach is also technically a through station as trains have always continued towards Sheringham; as High only really ever served trains south its location and the ease of transferring everything to Beach really went against it.
If you continued towards Overstrand after the bridge (unfortunately yes, it is overgrown) there is actually still some train track down :)
Oh wow really? Maybe it's worth a return in the winter when the weeds have gone.
Thank you 😀
Great video
You should check out Conisbrough viaduct and the nearby cadeby tunnel if you haven't already.
Thats been on my list for about a year now i dont know why i have yet to do it.
Thanks for watching :)
love this video l live in norfolk. There were lots of other sidings further up where the tunnel in cromer is where the northrepps sign is follow road to kartrack racing and you can see more there. Roughton is pronounced row is in having a row with someone row ton
you should check out the old victoria station in norwich where halfords is now the station has gone but a local group are helping to uncover the old sidings and platform. Pretty amazing and awesome stuff
Is that Norwich City Station that was the Midland and Great Northern? That's part of my latest video 😀
Someone has built a OO gauge model railway layout on Cromer High, great video.
I'll have a look online to see if there are any pictures of the layout. Thank you for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed it 😀
@@TrekkingExploration
Pictures here in this group that built and own the layout.

Great video, if you wish to fill in a few blanks we, the Norfolk railway Heritage Group, got together with a local film company and filmed this area, the tunnel, the Runrton Viaduct and Cromer Beach Signal box...this may fill in a few blanks for you...look up Norfolk Uncovered 'the lost railways of Cromer" on You tube...I fined in the same locations...regards, John (Norfolk Railway Heritage Group)
Ah Mr Batley is that you? I saw you'd been in my neck of the woods recently 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it, what a lovely historical area. I'll be back in September to do a bit more. Are you still involved with Norwich City Station? I'm looking at going there also and doing The Marriott
@@TrekkingExploration haha, yes it's me, and Welcome to Norfolk, a great film to watch, Yes, I have a great interest in the Clipstone Branch and decided to use my ex railwaymans nose and have an exploration of the area, you prob know the area better, I did a bit of research before I went down there, and found loads of stuff, was like a treasure trove ti me as we dont normally find a lot of stuff on our old local railways...yes still involved on Marriotts Way, if you are this way again, drop me a message and I'll help if you want it, regards, John
It’s not and never was Norfolk’s only full-sized railway tunnel. It’s the only one that’s still in existence, but there was also the railway tunnel on the Wymondham-Wells line at Barsham.
With these tunnels and bridges i love how the brickwork is at an angle giving a fabulous curved effect Ant...were looking to travel through a tunnel on saturday after our cotton famine road walk near rochdale and were gonna do a bit of footage for our next V,log....Great video Ant.... Frank & Lee...
A tunnel? I'll look forward to seeing that 😀 I was only thinking yesterday I need to get back onto the Rochdale canal 😀
Was that a piece a bullhead I saw next to that sleeper? The tunnel appeared quite wide for single track & refuge places.
I wonder if it ever was double track? The image of Cromer Links Halt Station was single track and i think that was only around a quater of a mile away
At 11:13 can u use the tunnel u were in at 9:40 to go towards overstrand the hole way
At 1:17 did the track from cromer high go over the now disused bridge on mill road
The railway to Cromer High went over the Tunnel
did they use genuine period formula mortar for the brickwork query
At 11:04 were abouts in cromer is cromer links halt station
A trekking pole is useful to hit back nettles.
I was lucky they looked a lot higher than they were I was probably being a wimp 🤣
Thanks for watching 🙂
Was it single track through the tunnel seems kind of odd putting a spigit mortar base there.
I think it may have been as Cromer Links Halt a little further up was also single track. That spigot must have been there for around 80 years 😮
@@TrekkingExploration thanks for the info I hope the mortar operator was a good shot would not be a good idea to miss and hit the brick work.
There was a short section of double track from Roughton Road Junction which stopped before the Road bridge and the tunnel it was then all single line. Perhaps there were plans for two tracks but never carried out, I think I read somewhere the Cromer Beach to North Walsham joint line never made any money?
At 1:11 did the train go over the bridge or under it
Over the bridge heading into Cromer High.
Both over and under. Over to Cromer High station from Norwich, under to Cromer Beach station from North Walsham - Mundesley.
Hi
Is it a Mortar turret?
Its called a Spigot. You slotted a mortar or gun onto the spike and it allowed it to swivel/rotate.
Quite surprising they went to all that effort and expense to build a short tunnel instead of just a cutting? Presumably something on the top stopping them from going with that?
It was the railway above built a few years prior to this one that terminated at Cromer High Station 🙂
@@TrekkingExploration I don't get it
Four tracks ran over the tunnel into Cromer High Station going over the bridge that now has no top on it. The tunnel took the line from North Waltham/Mundesley through Roughton Road junction into Cromer Beach Station.
Shame the locals dont clear it all out and make it part of a nice walk .. .. ..
It does feel like one that's just lost... It's amazing how many locals didn't know about it.
Thank you for watching 🙂
That is a spigot for a mortar rocket. Not sure why it is in there.
I read a few snippets since that it was a line of defence also ammo store
It’s a pity that the old railways are not used for cycle ways and walking tracks
It would be nice, it's sad to see so many forgotten about. Thank you for watching 🙂
At 15:11 did he say routon routon
Cromer High
recess we say refuge.
I often say one or the other depending on what comes out first 👍 Thanks for watching
That pin in the circular concrete is ww2. Hit the pin and blow the rail up.
