As an Upstate NY resident my entire life I was in no way offended by this episode. In fact, it is probably the best episode of the Simpsons in a long time. People are too easily offended these days and that’s a problem. Being able to laugh at oneself, especially in an instance like this, is healthy. I also think inviting the writers of the Simpsons to the State Fair will only give them more material. Therefore, I absolutely hope the writers go to the fair and write the sequel to this episode with a whole new song that we can all laugh with. Best Episode Ever! 😬

For being in the same state as NYC and even Long Island , Upstate NY is a pariah. Economically disadvantaged, low income households, lots of drug abuse and addiction , poor access to healthcare, endemic of teen pregnancies, yet politically liberal (you’ll find BLM posters still up on peoples homes And pride flags). Just a strange region of the country. In winter it is extremely depressing. But in summer and fall it is scenically beautiful.

Upstate New York pecking order: Utica bottom, Syracuse second from bottom, Rochester second from top and Buffalo at the top of an unimpressive group of former industrial centers. Blood, sweat and tears made these areas and now with most of the manufacturing either overseas or in the South, Upstate New York cities are searching for new identities. High taxes, strict and excessive regulation / laws and harsh winters make these former industrial centers hard to convert to new economies in a meaningful way. Tesla was committed to producing 2,500 jobs in exchange for hundreds of millions of New York State tax monies towards a new plant in Buffalo, New York. Thus far, several years latter, only about 500 jobs have been created.

I’ve lived in Miami for two years but I’ve lived in New York for 24 I grew up there and upstate right outside the capital of Albany and a city called Schenectady well technically Scotia I was shocked they didn’t say anything about Schenectady Buffalo and Utica were expected and then I saw Niskayuna and I started dying the look of disappointment people have on their face when you tell them you’re from New York and they start mentioning the borough is that they lived in are they visited and then you said oh no I’m from upstate they literally look at you like what the fuck is in upstate

My husband is born & raised in upstate NY and I lived there with him for a year and a half & he thought this was hilarious, more so than I did. It was clearly hyperbole that I’m sure was written by people who were intimately familiar with the area, either as a native or a longterm stay guest & have a core affinity for it. TL;DR - It was a joke, a lot of upstate NY’ers are laughing about it.

My husband is born & raised in upstate NY and I lived there with him for a year and a half & he thought this was hilarious, more so than I did. It was clearly hyperbole that I’m sure was written by people who were intimately familiar with the area, either as a native or a longterm stay guest & have a core affinity for it. TL;DR - It was a joke, a lot of upstate NY’ers are laughing about it.

Dude I went to college in Potsdam about two hours north of Watertown. The only thing good about that place was that it was close to the Canadian border.
