- Day in the Life of a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner!
Ever wonder what a Psychiatric Mental Nurse Practitioner does on a daily basis?
Here are the things that I do in a daily basis working in an outpatient community mental health clinic.
It’s somewhat limited since I cannot show you what I do with patients due to HIPAA, but I show you as much as I can and what I do. Enjoy!!

Omg it's my dream to become a Psych NP! I'm still an undergrad in my school's nursing program but this just makes me even more motivated to aim for this position! Thank you so much!
Studying for my NCLEX this morning(registered nurse in Kenya) when I stumbled on this video. Really motivated me to keep on grinding till I get there. I will definitely be a regular.Thank you!
Thank you so much! Keep grinding !
How far are you now Njeri?
Awesome! I wish I knew a psychiatric nurse in Kenya.
What a great video! Thanks so much. There aren’t enough of these videos out there!
Thank you so much! thank you for your support
WOW, thanks for your effort and time..really. information was so timely. Your a good man..lucky client's..good luck sir.
Awesome! Thank you for sharing.
Great video!!!!!! Helpful and informative and real. Love that you work with case managers. I'm one and with my dual diagnosis , coordination is key yet a lot of primary care providers won't engage.
THank you so much! YESSS!!! i agree, coordination is such a huge tool we need to get stuff done
your job looks chill
I enjoy it lol
Mind giving tips on how to wrap it up(like what to say, etc...) and keeping sessions concise without it effecting patient satisfaction? Thank you for these videos. They have been extremely helpful.
Thank you for sharing your experiences. I am a new grad Psy NP, learning so much from you! Say hi to Ed, I also learned a lot from him 😀
Thanks for the video!! start my PMHNP program in fall 2020!!
You're welcome! Good luck! You'll do great
this is an excellent video, if you can please do more
I start my pmhnp program in 16 days!! I am si glad I found your videos😍
Yayyy congrats!! Can't wait to hear about your progress. Keep me updated
How is it going?
Love the video. I am waiting to hear back from Vanderbilt University’s School of Nursing (ABSN+MSN) program. I applied for the psychiatric mental health np specialty. Your videos are great!!
thank you so much for your support! congratulations, that is exciting. I will be rooting for you to get in. keep me updated on your results!
Hey. Update us please! Did you get in? I'm looking to enter 2020.
Update??
We’re you able to get in
Update: I did get in! However, I decided to pursue another passion of mine- school psychology. I was so proud of myself for getting accepted. Thanks for the comments guys. Hope all is well.
Thank you for sharing your experiences ! Can you do videos on the differences between working for the private and community
Yes, of course, great suggestion!
very cool. I'm at a three-way crossroad between CRNA vs. CNS vs. NP. Definitely leaning toward NP.
Honestly, either route will be great for you. All have their pros and cons. Do what fits your lifestyle and goals best!
K m Hi KM - would love to bounce ideas off you. I’m at crossroads too between CRNA & Psych NP. Been accepted to both. Find me on Instagram - @claudia_coordinates
Not sure if you can write back to me on RUclips
Thanks for another great video! Few questions for you if I may? Are you able to share how many patients in total you are managing? In addition, how many are you seeing on average per day? The reason I ask is because I have heard of psych NPs and MDs being overloaded with patients (up to 25-30/day). So essentially they are only seeing each patient for a med-review for only like 15-20 minutes which I think is horrible. Are you aware when entering new contracts as a psych NP, can you outline in your contract the size of your caseload you want along with how much time you want for each med-review and eval? I am curious to know, thanks!
Thanks for your vids!!!! Just graduated from undergrad and having an existential crisis trying to figure out what to do with my life, best way to help others. Seriously thinking of doing an alternate entry MSN - Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner programa here in Texas. Anyway, keep the videos coming! Thanks for taking the time
Thank you for the support and honestly, if you feel that this is something you can do for the rest of your life and have a passion for it, go for it! Feel free to email me at thepsychdude1@gmail.com if you have any questions
I love the head nod while you were checking the charts lmao
you like that? all types of focus there lol
Life of a Psych NP lmao yes it was funny. I’m majoring in nursing and your video was really good. I’m leaning towards working In that field
Do you think this would be a bad career choice for someone who has some social anxiety? I love medicine, psychology, and helping others but I do get a little anxious in social situations.
Great video! Thanks
Thank you so much!!
Thank you very much
If I review a chart more than about 15 minutes before a visit I won't remember anything, lol. I don't remember anything after they leave either so I do everything in the 20 or so minutes they're sitting in front of me. I've been at or fove years now and have great quality metrics and productivity. I do not become overly involved in therapy. There are other staff with time more adequately detailed to that. I IM the desk staff to rescue me if I get a heavy talker. Great job.
thank you so much for the support. haha, i try my best to prep the chart, but some days i can, but since i have so much free time in this setting, i can prep it.
Brian 😂😂😂😂
i’m starting my first GN position on an inpatient psych floor as soon as i pass my boards this summer, and i am going straight into my alma mater’s psych NP MSN program this fall! thank you so much for the video. i hope to work somewhere when i’m an NP where i get at least 30 minutes with patients! i’m very excited to have the independence to develop my own unique approach to the practice. i hope to provide a lot of education and referrals! do you ever get worried about making a mistake and being accused of malpractice? that’s my biggest fear... like i know i’m going to try my absolute best to provide the safest and most effective care to my patients, but what if i make a terrible mistake somehow?
yeah, its definitely nice having 30 mins for follow ups. of course being accused of malpractice is always on my mind, but as long as im providing the highest quality of care as i can, patient will understand.
thank you for such thorough explanation of what your work day look like. p.s. Do you need to wear the medical uniform when interacting with the patients?
Hi, thanks so much for this video! Just a question, it seems that you deal a lot with medications, is there a therapy component? Do you do any psychotherapy with your clients or is it not common in psych nursing? Thanks in advance:)
Yes, i do provide supportive therapy, but depending on where i work, medication management is the main component. it isnt like that for everyone tho.
I’m currently getting my nurse-midwifery masters and plan on getting a post-masters in psych-NP my dream would be to marry my passion for mental health and women’s health. Especially focusing on post-partum depression and psychosis, along with pregnancy related grief and loss. Have you seen such a combo in your experience as a psych NP?
I'm looking at Psychiatric NP programs now. This is the exact kind of work I'm looking to get into. Can I ask when do you do all of this charting with having so many patients back to back? Do you stay late after your last patient or do you do it on the weekends?
Everyone has a different style, I do my charting when they leave the office. I've noticed that when I talk and chart while they are in the room, they stay a little longer but when I give them my full undivided attention, they don't stay as long so I have more time to chart when they leave. I'll have enough time to finish before my next patient
Thank you so much for the video! I was wondering though just what exactly is the difference between a psych np and a psychiatrist in terms of job description?
This is an extremely complicated question to answer but, honestly it depends on which setting you’re in and what state you’re practicing in. For the most part we both evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients in a similar manner. Some restrictions might be along the lines of breaking involuntary holds, but very few that I can think of right now lol.
Hey the psych dude, great vids as usual! What are your schedule like? My guess since you're outpatient would be Mon through Friday 9-5. Weekends and holidays off?
+Michael Meehleib thank you so much! And yesss, mostly Monday thru Friday from 8-5 and holidays and weekends off
Awesome
thank you so much!
I only have one semester left! can't wait to be a real PMHNP!
I have a question about interventions - is it ok to include holistic plans of treatment to the patient that may seem like "alternative" medicine, like yoga, brainwave entertainment, herbs, etc.? If there are peer-reviewed scientific studies done confirming efficacy of some of these alt treatments for diseases. I'm asking from a legal standpoint. I would hate feeling like my hands are tied when I want to tell a patient something for their benefit, but cannot.
Also, do you get lonely in the profession?
Are job opportunities for MHNP harder to find vs FNP jobs? What sort of facilities do MHNPs work in?
When could you do counseling if you want to do counseling? I’m a therapist going to nursing school. I love therapy. What is the best type of a setting for those who WANT to do counseling?
Has anyone answered this Question for you?
Thanks for the video! Being a psych NP is my dream job. I just recently graduated with my BSN and starting my first job on a med/surg floor. Do you have any tips on what I should do as a new grad RN in order to prepare and get accepted into NP school? Did you have any prior psych RN experience prior to getting into NP school? Thanks again!!
of course, im glad i can help. i would say grab some med surg experience then move on into psych. if you love psych then gain 1-2 years of eperience to make sure you love this population, then apply. Make sure you get good BSN grades, get psych experience, get good letters of recs and gain shadow hours with a psych NP. i had 2 years of psych experience prior to NP school
Get the double certification PMHNP-BC and FNP
The Psych Dude hi, how many shadow hours your recommend for the application ?
How can I become a psychiatrist nurse? Should I become a RN first or I can just go straight to study it? U get the point
I need a preceptor. I am willing to travel. Do you ever precept?
What are medication consent forms and what is “contracting for safety”?
So glad I came across your account! Such an insightful video! Would you consider most of your day consisting of medication management? As a NPMH do you see room to add therapy into your practice?
Great question, there is a lot of medication management and supportive therapy! Typically it depends on which settting you’re in
I’m a Psych NP in CMH, as well. I do med mgmt but also try to incorporate Motivational Interviewing techniques, which can be brief therapy. Some of our clients don’t have therapists so they appreciate the support. Just discovered your channel, Psych Dude. Very helpful. I noticed you are in CA. I’m at CMH in LA county. Where are you?
How many patients do you see on average in the community health setting and how many do you see in private practice?
Great question, but anywhere from 10-14
Sounds like a lot of charting.
Yes it can be, but it gets easier as you develop your own flow and template
Your video gave me an insight of what i would like to pursue in future. Can you let me know what are my career options in psychiatry because i have done my masters in psychiatric nursing from India. What studies or exams should i further take up to work as a psychiatric nurse?
for providers in psychiatry, there are so many options but the main ones are psychiatrists (MD/DO), and psychiatric NPs and psychiatric RNs. I think you need to attend a post masters psych NP program in the united states.
Hi psych dude..gr8 video
Do u think it's better to go to online school or other wise? Which is a good online school
Hi! thank you so much for the support. I honestly prefer in person programs, but online schools can be great. I heard frontier is a great one
Hi, does anyone know of any sites that teaches care plan. Thank you in dvance
What percentage of your patients generally have a family history with mental health treatment?
honestly its hard giving exact concrete specifics, but from my experience, i do see quite a bit and it depends on the population im treating
Great video! I’m currently a junior in high school and I have a school project where I research careers that I want to go into and this seems to be one of them :) what is your annual salary if you don’t mind me asking?
How do you ask of they are having visual hallucinations? Can the patients usually tell reality from hallucinations?
I start with "Do you see or hear things that other people don't" and probe more depending on the response and totality of symptom history.
Some of them can tell you they hear voices or see strange things that no one else sees
Hi there , just hired as psych nurse,i am looking forward to become a Psych NP, i am a correctional nurse before handling some psych patient with behavioral disorder , and few psychotic patient ,. This is the first time i will work to a real psych hospital any advice from you Sir?actually im a little bit nervous.
I am a Psych major on my way to transfer to a 4yr soon. I just recently found the field of Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and its definitely what I want to pursue as a career. Do you know if I’ll have to switch majors to nursing? Any tips would help. Good videos as well!
I have a B.A. in Psychology. I'm applying to ABSN programs (Accelerated B.S. Nursing) for my second degree. If i go this route, I'll work a couple years bedside, then get my Masters in Psychiatric NP.
@@KB-wx3vz Is it required to do masters in order to work as a psych nurse?
@@jaynewu3714 no, just need an RN. But to be a psychiatric nurse practitioner you of course need one. It’s a specialized role, basically acting as a low level psychiatrist.
Hey, some schools like OSU have programs where you go from just a random bachelors to psychiatric nurse practitioner in three years. Might be something to look into
@@KB-wx3vz what programs you plan on touring thru?
This video was super helpful! i am about to graduate with my BSN and I have always been interested in Psychiatric Nursing. Your video was super helpful as what I might do for my masters. Have you been interested in being involved in inpatient care rather than outpatient care?
Thank you for sharing this video. If someone wants to specialize in pediatrics psych as NP. how can it be done?
So technically based on our training and certification, we are allowed to see patients across the lifespan, meaning treat patients of all ages. We don’t have to get any other certifications, but that doesn’t mean we can seek more training. I would say finding a child psych willing to take you under their wing and teaching you and doing more continuing education on treating pediatric patients
Can psych NP's provide medicine to patients? If so do you have to get permissions from physicians first?
Yes psych NPs can prescribe medications. Yes, depending on which state youre from, you dont need permission. There are 20+ states where NPs can practice independently
@@LifeofaPsychNP Thank you. Is California one of them?
@@coreywilliams266 Unfortunately, California is not one of them.
@@LifeofaPsychNP Wait my therapist is a psych NP and she has her own practice and prescribe meds in CA. hmmm
@@WhyarewehereNow she has a collaborative agreement with an MD then. Basically, she pays an MD to review a certain percent of her charts.
I’ve decided I want to major in psychology (mental health, is what I would love to deal with) however i don’t want to prescribe medications For patients I want to talk with them about what’s going on and how they are doing so I guess evaluate them.. what is that called exactly?
With kids until they are 18
If you don’t want to prescribe meds, then psychiatrist or psych nurse practitioner is out the window. You have many options to diagnose and provide talk therapy. You can be a social worker, marriage family therapist or psychologist
The Psych Dude I wouldn’t mind prescribing medication but I am not so much interested with going to school more than 6 years.. so I’m really trying to see what I could do to work with kids who have mental health issues, that get payed a decent yearly salary! Mental health and psychology interests me so much!!
@@ericamcphee4794 medication and therapy go hand in hand. sounds like you want to be a clinical psychologist but the salary with that is eh in the end though the salary shouldn’t matter if you really care about helping people and their mental health. good luck
Is this pretty similar to a psychiatrist’s day? I’m starting medical school this summer 🤗
+psiloveme every provider is different In what they do, but this def can be similar
I have been accepted into a nursing program and have always wanted to further my studies to PMHNP. After watching your video, the job seems very repetitive. Is the 30 minutes the most you spend with a client?
Bruce Desa well if you think about it nursing and any field is repetitive but every patient is different and the way you treat them is different. Typical time is 1 hour for initials and 30 mins for follow up, sometimes less.
I have a close family member who suffers from mental illness they of course don't think anything is wrong.. what can we do to get them help they are 30 yrs old and I'm sure if they can get some form of medication they will be just fine..I'm a nurse and I just dont know how to get them to a dr if they dont think they have an issue please advise
Hello @dinahmite425 you may want to look into an organization called NAMI (google it). They have a lot of information and programs for people experiencing mental illness as well as their family members. The actually have a 12 week family to family class that gives families an ample amount of resources to help their family member as well as to help themselves
Thank u so mch for this video...I am defiently learning a lot and I do really need ur guidance . Enjoyed and got more information too !!! How can I reach you for more queries..
im so glad i can help. please feel free to email me at thepsychdude1@gmail.com
Completing my undergrad, but wanting to change tracks to a nursing track to become a mental health NP, maybe get a dnp someday 🥹. All of these videos are very insightful and give me more confidence about my future 😍
Hey! Lovely video, I just wanna know this; Can a Psych NP offer psychotherapy?
Thank you so much! Yes, they can offer psychotherapy and many do it
Pls make a vid for telepsyc too.
making one soon =)
This is something that I'm interested in. I've been trying to shadow someone, how do you think I should go about that?
niceee, im glad youre interested. i would suggest networking on social media or going to your local hospitals. watch my video on finding a preceptor and you can use those tips to help you
Can you be my preceptor? You’re are amazing
Thank you so much!. i need more time to learn before im ready to teach!
Are you usually alone in a room? Do you have interaction with other staff?
You interact but definitely not as much compared to when you’re a nurse
Is it harder to find work in an outpatient clinic than an inpatient clinic?
I would say its easier to find an outpatient clinic job as a NP compared to inpatient job
This guy seems really nice. He breaks down the most simple things. I couldnt do it. 😂👌🏼
who does? haha im not sure who youre talking about
The Psych Dude Haha :) You do well sir. I can tell you have incredible amounts of patience and id def refer a patient to you! Thx for the vid. ♥️
Bro. Do you have spechaly clinic same doctors
Do you ever have to provide counseling? I want to be a psych NP but I don’t want to do counseling.
Yes, I do. I do it in my private practice
@@LifeofaPsychNP but did you have to do it when you were employed at a job?
Most places just use psych NPs for medication management not counseling
@@LifeofaPsychNP thank you 🙂
Was the other guy a patient or your friend? It’s seemed very friendly & lots of smiles. I was imagining that meeting with psych patients would not be as ‘friendly’ or social since they are there because they are ill / not in best mood. Just curious
My colleague
what college courses/ degree is necessary to become a psychiatric nurse?
from what ive heard, they dont have any psychiatric programs for RN, its more of a board certification by getting hours and taking a board certification exam for RNs
@@LifeofaPsychNP how many working hours do you need?
Can you do school for this online?!
There are some online psych np programs
Hi! What state are you practicing? My husband just finished his PMHNP program. Thanks!
California
Where can I find material to study for my Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Board.
great question, in my description, i put what study materials i used. You def should check it out !
@@LifeofaPsychNP Where did you put the description? I really need your help. Thank you.
As a future Psych DNP I was wondering what is your view on benzodiazepines for mental health? Do you prescribe them?
I do prescribe them but honestly, I only do it as last resort and on an as needed basis. I have strict requirements, but if it’s needed and justifiable to why they need it, then I will.
Hey what was your background? What kind of nursing did you do before? Thanks :)
I had psych inpatient and outpatient experience, along with emergency medicine experience
The real question is...is it true? Do psych NP's really make bank?
In dallas start at 140,000
@@dinahmite425 Where did you get your PMHNP?
@@dinahmite425 yup, here in South Florida starts around 125,000-155,000 dollars
how many hours a week do you work as a psych NP?
Right now I work a little more that 45 hours a week on average. I probably work anywhere from 40-50 hours a week, depending on my patient load at my private practice
@@LifeofaPsychNP daaaamn! Sounds like a lot. Do you know of any psych Nps working 30-36 hours/week?
Hahha it's a lot for now because I'm slowly building up my private practice. Once I'm done building it up, I'm planning on working 30-40 hours a week
On average how many patients do you see per day? What are your hours?
Anywhere from 12-25 depending on where I work. If it’s at my community mental health center, I see max 14. If it’s at my private practice, I see 20+. Usually 8-5
Thanks!@@LifeofaPsychNP
How long does it take to become this ?
minimum 7-8 years out of high school. 4 years to get BSN and 3-4 to get psych NP
The Psych Dude Were you working right after getting your BSN? Or did you have to wait out to get your Psych NP degree before you started your job? How does the DNP work? Would it be 10 years?
ayah a it’s required to work 2years with RN license basically after BSN
@@aggi7695no not really, you can go to psych np school after rn graduation
Is it hard to become this ?
it was definitely tough, but worth it.
You are a very dedicated and knowledgeable practitioner. I wonder why psychiatrists' and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners' roles are being narrowed into prescribing medications. It almost seems as if their role has been re-focused as promoters of the pharmaceutical industry. This is not to disparage you or any individual psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner. Psychiatrist Daniel Amen emphasizes natural treatments such as herbs, vitamins, and minerals, altho he does prescribe medications in a limited way for some patients. His book, The End of Mental Illness describes his BRIGHT MINDS approach for brain health: B-Blood flow increase R-Retirement/Aging factors I-Inflammation G-Genetics H-Head Trauma T-Toxins M-Mind storms (abnormal electrical activity)
I-Infections/Immunity N-Neurohormones D-Diabesity S-Sleep
I hope that the super well-educated Psych MDs and PsychNPs will not be limited in their healing roles to prescribing pharmaceutical medicines when there are many other natural, less addictive approaches with less side effects. God bless you.
