Lucas Mangope worked for his people and developed the then Bophuthatswana immensely. Now as North West, the province has become a swamp of corruption, incompetence, almost zero service delivery, under development, hopelessness etc. Thanks to cANCer!! Ironically Mangope warned his people about the ill intentions of cANCer but nobody cared to listen. Now the people of NW are paying the heaviest price and indeed euphoria has evaporated.

Phephi my brother. I once visited Bophuthatswana in the early 80s during Kgosi Mangophe's tenure with Soweto Orchestra. We slept at the Guest House and we were given a royal treatment. We played at Lehurutsi Hall. Bophuthatswana was well managed and beautiful. Not now, it is a mess!! Thanks to the ANC!!

Yes, Mangope was very much in favour of not only being independent but also unifying all the Tswana lands, so Bophuthatswana and Botswana would have eventually merged to be a greater Tswana nation

Was that really given to them as an option? I thought that, once apartheid ended in South Africa, Bophuthatswana's reuniting with South Africa was sort of a _fait accompli_ -- since it was never internationally recognized, and was still considered part of S.A. Was there some kind of referendum, on being part of Botswana?
