The Beauty, Meaning, and Use of Essential Dignities in Astrology

  • Today I've made a video explaining the philosophy behind the use of essential dignities.
    For example, why did ancient astrologers ever categorize Venus in Aries as "detrimental," or Jupiter in Cancer as "exalted?" Were these categories just simple prejudices, or was there something deeper at work? Also, how should we use this language today? I've made this video after something of a public debate took place over the weekend about the language of the dignities, which a number of my students emailed me about. I hope everyone enjoys it!

    I've been an astrologer for twenty years. Met a number of teachers and many approaches to our beloved art. I think you are a great, natural born teacher, a really kind soul, and the level of your commitment to Soul is palpable.
    Had to thank you for all the work you do.
    Keep it up!
    You are a gem.

    When you were discussing how we are not our birth charts, a quote came to mind from Alfred Korzybski (founder of the field of general semantics), “The map is not the territory.”

    I had to giggle over your saying "Most people prefer eating a piece of pie rather than being thrown one in the face ". That's such a good way to put how it feels to have planets in their dignity or in their detriment or fall. 💓

      I'm laughing over your Mars in Cancer stories. My boyfriend has Mars in Cancer conjunct Saturn, both opposite his Moon. He was telling me just yesterday about earlier getting chased and stung by angry hornets -even in his hair- while trying to protect his own children- until he jumped in the shower . And yesterday at the beach he got stung by a bunch of fire ants on his feet. 😔

    I really needed to hear this message. My natal Venus is in Aries retrograde and I am a life path seven. A funny antidote: my six year old daughter was watching a cartoon called “The Lion Guard” and out of nowhere my daughter said “I think the cheetah is a life path 7”.
    I looked up from my work and asked my daughter why.
    My daughters response: “well you can tell the cheetah wants to have fun, but she puts a smile on her face and isn’t really having fun”
    Obviously I was astonished because I have spoken rarely about numerology to my daughter (who is a life path 3) and yet she seemed to understand.
    Hearing you relate your wife’s experience made me smile knowingly and respectfully.

    Thank you for this!!! The dignities are so important and it's kind of pathetic that there are hugely popular astrologers out there who clearly know nothing about them. But I have a request! Can you do at least a brief explainer video on why you dont use the outer planets as rulers and why/when you do use them for other things? And also on why the houses are NOT ruled by the signs 1-12 like aries - 1st house etc.
    When I talk using these rulerships and detach the houses from the signs a lot of ppl literally start freaking out and it's hard to briefly encapsulate a thorough response.

    This resonates so much. I like the idea of the birth chart as the fingerprint or filter through which the soul chooses to incarnate. That's just a mask we decide to use in this life but it's not the infinite eternal soul experiencing those influences. ♥️ This reminds me of your videos on Karma and overcoming our karma.
    I'm a big fan of the idea that we're not here to act but to experience. Too often people focus on their actions that they undertake but really that what creates an individualized soul is experiences.

    THANK YOU FOR THIS GREAT PIECE OF WORK. FOR YEARS, I FUMBLED WITH THE LANGUAGE OF ASTROLOGY. THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY I NEVER GOT INTO ASTROLOGY. SO, I LEFT IT ALONE 30 YEARS AGO. NOW 30 YEARS TODAY, I AM RELIVING A PART OF MY PAST THAT IS ASKING ME TO MASTER AS A TOPIC. SO, HERE IS TO THE POWER OF SATURN. I LOVE ASTROLOGY AND HOW YOU MAKE IT ACCESSIBLE AND DEMYSTIFY IT TO A LEVEL THAT HELPS MANY. THANK YOU....ALL THE BEST FOR THE REST OF 2020.

    Acyuta when you mentioned that we are the soul experiencing the time and that it is how we respond.... something clicked very deeply inside of me. I've heard this many different ways but today it clicked on a whole different level. It's like my soul had known this but after learning astrology my ego was fixated on feeling as if "this is how you're supposed to feel right now". Thank you. I love your soul and authenticity. Much love ❤

    Thank you so much for this thoughtful and well-balanced explanation. I read tarot and have even seen a well known reader with a deck where Death, The Hanged Man and so on have been filtered out or renamed so as not to scare people, yet there is no way to filter out what is fearsome or difficult in life and learning to face it is the only way to self-knowledge. The smooth path doesn't always create the best outcome, if it did the rich and beautiful would be truly the wisest and happiest among us. Your emphasis on the response and not the event is for me the essential.
    I am so looking forward to studying with you in June :)

    I love listening to your talks, I learn so much and my awareness is intrigued and cultivated!! It's true that the language requires careful expression. I met an astrologer once at a random social event and when she found out my Jupiter was in Capricorn in the 8th house.. she scrunched up her face and said "oh! I am so sorry, that's rough" and literally she closed off from me and it was if I was written off. It kind of haunted me for awhile. I have been studying astrology for years non professionally, and I have come to see dignity as not good/bad so to speak but more like what you described, areas in which effort or obstacle can allow for extra if nurtured or areas where too much of a good thing can lead to waste. For example, my life presents many huge hardships that others do not experience and my public image is one where every one says they are amazed at what I endure, that I am still smiling, that I work hard regardless of set backs, that I have idealism in my heart even when beat down by broken systems, etc.... Saturn is in my 1st house. Sun & Moon in 10th. I also have Mars in Taurus in the 12th house with Venus... someone could say this is also "bad" but I see it as my fighting against the insurance company who denied my daughter's emergency back surgery claims instead of falling victim.. etc... I have inspired many others by sharing this info publicly (Mercury in Aries). North node in 9th in Aquarius. Thank you again for sharing your wonderful insights!

    Oh wow thank you for this! I have all of my planets in either detriment or fall, but I like the term "exile" much better because I mostly certainly feel not at home here on earth. But..i have also sensed that is part of my path because I also have incredible luck, health, and protection when I surrender to my heart or strange art calling. I've wondered how to make sense of the planets in my chart but when I use the word "exile," it makes so much more sense. Thank you!🙏💙🙏

      I’m realizing I think the “my” feels more relevant for this placement because it’s in the first house, so in that sense I would think it IS more likely to be about the native, versus placements in other houses that speak to other topics and life circumstances the native may encounter.

    There must be exaltings and detriments in the physical realm where polarity exists. And it is up to each of us through choice to focus thought on those things which we enjoy so the energy can come that matches that. We also have the choice to focus on what’s not so great and get more of that. Thoughts create things as the law of attraction (also law of vibration) shows. Contrast allows us to know what we want and then we can choose to be vibration which attracts that. When done without judgment there is no worry of detriment (or benefit from exaltation). It’s all just information with qualities and choice.

    Thanks for this video. This was a great explanation of dignities and detriments. I've wondered if planets are exalted or dabilitated based on the houses that they are in. such as if Venus is in the 7th house of Libra or the 2nd house of Taurus. Venus is said to be exalted in Pisces but they say not so good in the 12th house I'm wondering what the difference would be.

    • @simonarthroscopy9532
      @simonarthroscopy9532 4 года назад +5

      As he said in the video, houses should not be conflated with the signs. 1st house ≠ Aries, 2nd ≠ Taurus, 7th house ≠ Libra, 12th ≠ Pisces, etc. The houses do not get their meaning from the signs and vice versa. He has another video about the meanings of houses and how they’re derived.
      The planets are said to “joy” in certain houses. 1st is the joy of Mercury, 3rd is the joy of the Moon, 5th is the joy of Venus, 6th is the joy of Mars, 9th is the joy of the Sun, 11th is the joy of Jupiter and 12th is the joy of Saturn.

    • @CharpyTheHedgehog
      @CharpyTheHedgehog 4 года назад +4

      The houses and signs are completely unrelated. There's no crossover whatsoever. The sooner you unlearn the signs=houses nonsense the better. So no, Venus is not strengthened in the 2nd house and certainly not in the 12th house!! She is stronger in the 7th house but that's because the 7th is an angular house and whatever planets sit in angular houses (1st/4th/7th/10th) have more power and influence in the chart as a whole. The best house for Venus though is the 5th house because that is where she is said to be in her joy (makes sense that Venus would thrive in the house of sex, pleasure, children etc).

    Acyuta-bhava Dasa, would you Like to share about Uranus conjunct Jupiter and South Node 00 -2° Libra 8th house?
    I have Mercury in Pisces btw and looking for strengths in my chart but from what I heard before Jupiter and South node can be depression which I went thru younger years' is it true with age and self reflection, inner standing and spiritual experience over years in hardship where gifts result later in life, tough placements Venus in Aries conjunct Saturn financial and love frustration'
    Resolve . Isn't that the point to life is that facing the challenges we master the rehabilitational content from a debilitated planetary alignments mystery . I heard Gundunda 00° Aries North Node brings a 'knot to unwind" that when handled well, has miracle making magic☆I f you have interest in speaking about that' Thank You so much for reading and for helping bridge the gap within the language of dignity🗻

  • @cl9826
    @cl9826 5 месяцев назад

    I think the reason modern astrologers have an issue with the concept of dignities is because they have been trained to interpret the chart in a psychological way which actually IS a reflection of you as a person, rather than the ancient interpretation of life events, which as you mention is not a relection of the person themselves. So these two concepts become intertwined with another and lead to an inaccurate and negative view of the concept of dignities.
