    Hey, thanks for the video! For those of you interested in buying a fluval fx6, I just bought one. Here is my 1hr experience:
    SUPER easy to set up
    Extremely Quiet once running. Just the dull hum of a motor
    This video has three areas where it lacks full info: (1) When they put the canister under the tank and say turn it on, the valves where the in and out tubes go are in the horizontal position. They need to be in the VERTICAL position to work. (2) You unit might run for 30 seconds and then it will turn off all by itself...you will be confused...the unit is only try to get air out of the system and will resume running after a painful 2-3minutes, don't worry like I did. It may turn off and on a couple of times in order to evacuate all the air. (3) If you are going to do activated carbon, its easier to place in the unit before you go through the trouble of getting it all set up.
    I agree with people that this is expensive, but fluval has great customer service and many replaceable parts as well as a warranty so I expect this to run for a long time.
    Best of luck!

      UPDATE: so i've been using it for 3 weeks now...I can't say anything bad about it. It is still so frickin quiet and the tank looks perfectly clear (110gallon). It comes with jet blowers on the output side so you get good water movement through the tank. I've moved them a couple of times to mix up deadzones/make it more interesting for the fish. Would recommend to something without a tight wallet. No experience with cheaper makes like Sunsun to give a fair comparison.

    I bought my a few days ago and set up yesterday Monday Feb 5th and what a great difference ... super quiet, the set up was so easy, got caught when I turned it on and suddenly it stopped lol I unplugged and plugged it back in .... the it turns off on it's own again !!! Then I remember this thing is now "smart" lol oh wow .... I left it alone lol it works wonders removing the bubbles from canister to minimise noise, etc .... any how ... I like it ... I had a marineland 350 (very noisy)

    I used the fx5 for years, great canister filter, probably the best of its time. Everything was well made and the motors on these Hagen machines are robust and long lasting. I used mine on marine aquarium and installed my own media. I added carbon and bio media and wool. I imagine you could us it as a sump pump, I don't see why not.

    Mine is setup a bit different than stock. I have biological media in all the trays. I use Seachem Matrix (a total of 3.5lbs) in the canister. The 1st tray also has 3 filters (course-Black, medium-blue and fine-white). The last tray has the thin Black filter at the bottom just in case to prevent any of the media from entering the pump and 2 Seachem Purigen packs. Additionally, I've recently installed a 90* PVC adaptor to replace the dual output nozzle for a more directed water flow. The filter is used on a 125g cichlid tank and I am quite happy with the filter, despite what the interweb has to say about it. It's been running constantly for 4 years now and quiet as a church mouse.

    I just set this up in my yellow bellied slider’s tank in 30 minutes. I’m actually shocked how easy it was to do (and I am rubbish at anything technical). I can’t tell you how delighted I am with it. I’ve had serious issues with a much cheaper brand that just hasn’t been doing it’s job. Set this up and 2 hours later I had a crystal clear tank and a very happy turtle. It’s well worth the cost (I hope).

    My FX5 filters great but the weakest link was the lid knobs. I've had to replace them 2 times now over a 5 year period. The orange plastic material did not hold up. It dry rots and crumbles after about 2 years. The pump is clearly out of waranty by then but it is rediculous that they charge $80 for a new set. Thats $160 so far for something that should never have to be changed and in about a year I'll have to fork up another $80 because these will start breaking around that time.

    I've used a Fluval 404 for 36 years and still working in mind condition. I then purchased a 306 about 10 months ago and just two days ago I purchased another Fluval, a 207. I also have a Iheim canister filter that is 38 years old and still working. Although, I can't dispute on the incredible quality and design of Iheim filters. But when I purchased the Fluval 404 from Highett Aquarium 36 years ago (since 1986), I realised the quality of Fluval was just as good as Iheim. I mean, it worked and worked with impellers life lasting from 4 years and now, 2-3 years the most. I can tell this when I start to hear the droning of the impeller because after many months of rotation the magnetic impeller hole starts to wear out and widen to cause vibration while the ceramic shaft is still intact to add a new impeller. However, on the 404, both impeller and ceramic shaft wear about the same time in or around 4 and half years. According to my observation now as a Fluval fan, the earlier models are the best and I will look forward in keeping the 404 going for a number of year in the future. What a great canister.
    However, When I purchased the 306 and installed on another tank, the first thing I noticed was the dripping of water at the point where the filtered water returned back in the tank. I don't know what the part's name is but the tip has a widened mouth so that the water coming out is spread a little. I removed that because of the leak. The water return part is bent and has the flexible water pipe connected to this part, which the top of the part is removable. That's where it leaks. This part has what looks like a lid/cap pressed on it and is removable.
    The second fault is a leak somewhere in the IN/OUT valves. If I turn both valves (as both turn at the same time due to design) more than half the flow, the right valve starts to leak at the side, suggesting that a faulty or pinched O rings is the problem. So, I cannot open more than half the flow or it will leak. I reported this to my local Aquarium store and was given a new valve system. But, generally this fault shouldn't be there. Another reason why 404 is still the best and works and works without problems.
    I recently purchased another Fluval filter, a 207 (10-11-2022) and started to check it up for missing parts and/or quality. I was immediately disappointed when I saw that the baskets inside the canister were of poor quality. In fact, compared to a product made in the 88's, the 404, The baskets in the 207 are and not seated one on top the other in a sealed fashion, whereas, the 404 baskets are tighter fitted to make sure the water from the tank going through these basked to be filtered does not escape between the little gaps between one basket and the others. But I like the idea of having a long tongue where you can lift the baskets all at once. However, the design and installation of the tongue (inside each basket) is making the filter mediums and sponges not sitting properly for a fully sealed fashion, so that water from the aquarium is not escaping from those gaps and return back in the tank unfiltered (or not filtered properly). Another reason I an not happy with the Fluvals of today, cheaply made and by design, also in the water cleaning and filtering sense, 10% or more water returns to the tank unfiltered. Whereas, no problem with my old and trust 404, water is filtered to a point that leaves toy speechless at the crystal clear water in the tank, as if there is no water in it and the fish seem to float in the air.
    To close this comment, I would also like to add that the same return-back-to-tank part also has a removable cap that causes water to slow drip on the floor. It is certainly caused by water pressure as it is returned back to the tank. I reported this to my aquarium store and he is going to talk with the Fluval agent. So, all in all, see how products change. See how you start to see the quality is also failing?
    But, on RUclips, everyone makes a video in favour of Fluval. Sure, it is a great canister filter, but would today's Fluval canisters last you 36 years like my old and gutsy 404? Tell me, tell me. I want to hear what you have in mind. If RUclips was like G App that Google removed a few years back, where you could post photos and screenshots, I could have posted a couple of screenshots to show what the old 404 is doing today. Cheers 😉👍

    • @fluval
      @fluval  6 лет назад +3

      The water enters the outside of the media baskets, then traverses the foam surround media upwards to the top and then downwards through the media baskets, at the bottom of the media basket stack is the chamber that leads to the pump intake. The pump then pumps upward through the included inner canister output tube.

The best guide is to monitor your water quality and adjust the flow rate as needed. Also, take the size of the fish into consideration and make sre they can not get sucked into it and injured. :)

    Swear by these, not cheap and not as easy to install as stated but you get the hang of it. I use these for large Slider Turtles, they create 3-4 times more waste than fish and water is still crystal clear. Only clean filters every three months, though it does need cleaning more often if using filter floss...personally I have not needed the floss. No leaks but I would strongly advise people watch you tube vids on stripping/cleaning/Lubricating and potentially replacing pump housing O-ring, I've not needed to do so yet but I strip and clean the whole thing every 12 months, check O-rings for deterioration and lubricate them with silicone lubricant (do same with impeller). Not doing maintenance could give way to leaks.

      The filter is rated for up to 400 gallons, but obviously your fish load and size of species will play a part in whether or not one unit would suffice. Why not try 1 and see how it goes before investing in another unit?

      Indeed, not only the size of the Tank is what counts, the number of fish and their size too, by the way I have several plants in the tank, some types of anubias... now i have 2 tetra ex1200 They are from my previous 150G tank, they are "ok" in the 250G but not as much as I want. Maybe 2 fx4 will be a better option than to gamble with 1 fx6

    I'm strongly considering getting an FX 6, but I am adamant i would like to continue using my brilliant BIOHOME media( which has unparalleled nitrite and nitrate removal ).Can I just ask, the way the FX6 is set up...?Does the flow through the media canisters go from the BOTTOM to the TOP before being sent back to the aquarium or is it TOP down to BOTTOM? Reason I ask is that to work 100% effectively, BIOHOME needs mechanical filtration ( waste particles etc ) before the water hits it ( the water should be particle free ).Many thanks for the help

      +Mark Pilgrim Hi Mark, the flow travels from the top to the bottom. The pump inlet is at the bottom of the media baskets.

      Hi, I would check to make sure you are not overloading the filter media baskets, that the media is fairly clean, and that the filter hosing is relatively straight with downward loops or bends. If your foam filtration is over a year old, replacing it can help as well. Is this a marine or freshwater aquarium?

    hello, i just finished installing my fx6 and its making some flucking noises and a lot of air bubble in my tank, please help

    • @fluval
      @fluval  2 года назад

      It's important to perform regular filter maintenance (media rinsing and replacement) to prevent media from compacting, which can result in air accumulation. Ensure the filter intake is not positioned near an airstone or any other source of air bubbles in the aquarium. Verify the integrity of the intake rubber hose connector that attaches to the intake siphon tube, as it does dry out over time and becomes hard and non-flexible, thus requiring periodic replacement. Also verify that the joint between the intake rubber hose connector and the intake siphon tube is positioned below the water surface. Lastly, ensure that all rubber gaskets and O-rings have been cleaned and lubricated with Fluval Silicone Lubricant (Item #A325), and that there are no kinks, loops, bends or turns in the hosing.

      Hi there! Yes, FX Series canister filters can be placed beside the aquarium rather than directly below it, provided the distance between the top of the canister and the water level is more than 8" / 20 cm and less than 59" / 150 cm. For the best filtration performance, ensure the hosing follows as straight of a path as possible, with no kinks or loops.

      Pump output is measured at the pump output, not at the tank. Filter flow rate is what is circulated through the filter.

    Do the ceramic media need to go into the mesh bags? I have a new setup (~3 days, 75 gallon tank home of 1 RES turtle) and I see slight white residue/film on the top of the water. Also I am having an issue with micro bubbles, as it seems to be getting air into the system. If I unplug/plug it works fine for about 45 minutes then starts bubbling.

    • @fluval
      @fluval  8 лет назад

      +dallas lamb First course of action is to always make sure to rinse media well before use. Ceramic media do not have to be contained in mesh bags. It is normal for the filter to eject air; the foam filter media will usually have to discharge trapped air for up to a few days after a new installation or maintenance. Turtles do create more of a mess, and the foods they consume do tear apart while they eat resulting in more surface film.

      Yes absolutely, that is a good sized aquarium and the fish species you mention can handle good water movement, in fact they do better with good water flow. The output nozzles on the FX series of canister filters also effectively disperse water, thereby providing a natural water movement free of overly strong directed currents.

    • @fluval
      @fluval  8 лет назад

      +zac logan Hi zac, that would depend on the source of the cloudiness. New aquariums are often cloudy due to the decor and residual dust and debris that comes with that. Try fine filtration pads for a few days, and if it clears, then remove those pads and replace them. Having straight hosing does help with water flow, as does periodic maintenance of the hosing. Remember to remove the hoses a few times a year to give them a thorough rinsing.

      It will be fine in a 120 gallon aquarium. There are two discharge nozzles which can be directed independently and you can reduce flow the output valve. In our experience with adult discus in aquariums that size or greater no flow reduction will be called for. Most plecos prefer strong water flow. The platys will be ok.

    Fluval website gives Dimensions as (L x W x H): 37 X 37 X 58 CM (14.5 X 14.5 X 23 IN), so I am going with that, but I notice the lid is wider than the base and the motor sticks out a little more. Can anyone provide the measurements of the canister at its widest point and how much the motor sticks out by. Many Thanks

    • @fluval
      @fluval  9 лет назад

      Hi Stewart, the width pump sticks out approx. 3.25 inches, so allow for at least 3.5 inches here. Total width at the widest point is approx. 17.5 inches so allow for at least an extra inch here. Some factors can affect the actual dimensions (i.e. canister lock down knobs protruding, etc.), so we hope this additional information helps.

      +Andrew Mclaughlan Yes, you can. However, be advised that as you reduce flow you are increasing pressure within the canister. We would advise to instead use the existing output nozzles to direct the output current to meet the water movement that you are seeking to adjust.

    • @andycx2
      @andycx2 8 лет назад +1

      +Fluval Aquatics not quite sure what you mean? I'll be putting it on a 260 litre tank with red bellied piranhas in it. I thought it would be possible to reduce the input and output without any damage to the filter itself?

    • @fluval
      @fluval  8 лет назад

      +Andrew Mclaughlan We are suggesting that you be cautious, because if you reduce the flow enough and your filter is at the maximum distance specified from the waters’ surface, the pressure increase can create some risk. With that being said, thanks for letting us know that you have Piranhas in a 260L aquarium. These fish will appreciate the water movement, and you can certainly use your FX6 at full flow and direct at least one output such that you are using one nozzle to create good surface movement in order to support better oxygen levels.

      When feeding it is a good idea to feed small amounts allowing fish to consume all the food before putting in the next portion, if fish are fed in small offers then there is no need to shut the filter down. When it comes to bottom feeders the fact that the food is on the bottom should suffice. in preventing it from entering the filter.

I saw how you attached the hose to the top of the tank, but I have a plastic rim that goes all the way around.. i believe mine is an Aqueon 75 gallon... I already have a Trigger Systems 39 Sapphire hooked up to my aquarium. I want to add a canister filter and it looks like this is the industry standard.......BUT, is there another way to assemble for a tank with a lip around the top? Have you produced other videos about this product? Link? thanks for your help

      If by lip you are referring to an inner glass brace you can always have two holes drilled through the brace to allow passing the hosing or fittings.

      @@fluval thanks for getting back so fast... it's that plastic rim that goes around the top of my aquarium to keep it from bowing out and the seals from bursting

    hi, my electricity will be off for 5 hours, should I disconnect it or just leave it plugged in the wall

      It should start up, however, it's good practice to unplug in this situation.

    Can you give me the exact dimensions of the media baskets? I want to know the diameter and depth. In metric if you please. I have some foam pieces laying around and want to know how they will fit.

    Is it enough for a 6 ft x 1.5ft tank?

    I want to get the FX6...but not sure if it will fit under my 75 Gallon. The stand doors are only 14 inches wide...does anyone know if it can fit if I take the lid off?

    I just bought one FX6 and installed it however it’s noisy with a humming noise. I measure when possible and it’s about 70db. Is this normal? Thanks

      They are generally very quiet. You can try sitting the filter on a thick closed cell foam pad to eliminate any resonance.
