Beautiful sunsets, beautiful scenery, beautiful mountains and beaches, yet, there are so many things that are not perfect about Santa Barbara as well. It being in the state of California is one of those reasons. Hear what I like and what I don't like about Santa Barbara in this video.

I lived in SB for 30 years. Had a nice home behind the Mission and Natural History Museum. When I moved there in 1990 I really enjoyed the unique stores, great restaurants, and beautiful scenery. Unfortunately, things began to change quickly. There was an incredible increase in commercial rents, and many local merchants were forced out. Their stores were replaced by cheezy chain stores and t-shirt shops. The downtown area, once so peaceful and fun, became overrun with homeless people (which local gov't does absolutely nothing about), and traffic congestion became unbearable. I moved out of SB 5 years ago, and it was the best move I could have ever made. Sad to see such a beautiful area being drug down by the homeless, traffic, graffiti, and trash.

I live in San Diego and I see Santa Barbara as just another city. I don't want to live there. San Diego is my home. Also, it's expensive everywhere in Southern California. If you lived here all your life, it's a given. Many people leave for cheaper places and I don't blame them. It's horrifyingly expensive. You just get used to it. Something with the homeless. They're everywhere. That really can't be helped. And most likely will never change. I hate to say it but you get used to it too.

I would say Santa Barbara was a nice city, but now it is on the decline (Lower State Street). Last time I was there, I was walking up State St. and wondered into the Paseo Nuevo shopping center and found that Nordstrom is now a gutted shell of a building. I live 25 miles south of Santa Barbara and don’t really like going there anymore!

I lived there for 10 years and closing down the main drag of State street to cars has totally killed it's vibe, also long term lifers who have lived there for well over 50 years will feel the same as well.
BTW: The closing of Nordstrom. I saw this coming while walking through Nordstroms one day and commented to my other half Nordstrom is not doing so well, she replied how do you know that? I replied, look at the wall shelves in the lady shoe department, there used to be roughly 5 pairs on display, now there is only 2 pairs, then I said Nordstrom is on it's way out, and I also saw the end of Macys coming as well.

    • @user-fn8hy2pu1l
      @user-fn8hy2pu1l 6 дней назад

The Nordstroms disappearing isn't indicative of anything plaguing Santa Barbara. Department stores are obsolete and are disappearing around the country. Macy's and Sears are gone too, because they're dinosaur institutions that don't fit with the times.

Way too many ugly gray days when you forget the Sun even exists. I suspect the town is dying as all the major retailers are now gone, many vacant buildings now. Over the last 10 years the Downtown area has literally gone from Disneyland to skidrow. The transformation of this town has been truly stunning.

Once again Chris you have an ability to really see-understand a place whether you live there or not. I visited for a day around 15 years ago and thought it was beautiful as you so ably captured. But the cost of living is California on steroids....would never do it. A dear acquaintance of mine lived here in the 70-80s and her favorite activity was going out in her sailboat near sunset and sure enough you allude to that around 8:45 in the video! I agree totally with your outlook....California is killing the goose that laid the golden egg. But given the climate and scenery I was able to understand why in the 60s so many moved there including tech companies when it was affordable. A must see video to get the look, feel and outlook. One final note I appreciate is how you explain in detail how you rate the way you do. For instance you like that there is not a lot of fast food chains there so a plus for you. This though would be critical knowledge for a family with young children visiting or not. P.S. Awesome drone work!

Most of these “issues” can be easily dismissed for the perfect weather and scenery; that’l be most people’s reasonings for living there. Most all of Santa Barbara and the whole county at large is just for show, nothing about living in the area is economically sustainable for the regular person, if you plan on moving there make sure your have a 6 figure income or generational money that you inherited because given most the area is strategically planned to look the way it is, you’ll be damned if you plan on making a living around there. Being born and raised in the northern part of the county, it’s very normal and naturalized to travel more than 30 mins to a big box store to buy stuff for around the house and to feed your family, given the perfect geography and surroundings, your not stressing about the next wildfire or earthquake. That’s a very bad example for the negatives about the area because your to busy actually enjoying yourself and the area. There’s so much things to do around the area so if your not an outside nut, please go back to the big city or suburban sprawl where people can have everything at their fingertips. The region is for adventures and outdoor enthusiasts (most with lots of money to do so, so they’re not worrying about how conveniently close stores are to where they live). Given the elitist atmosphere, there’s also a big wealth discrepancy between the rich who don’t have to worry about home prices and the working class where you’ll have 3 or more generations living under one roof barely scraping by; but then again they probably enjoy life a lot more than living elsewhere just because of how nice it is there. I no longer live in the area but if I could be poor in Santa Barbara than where I am right now, I’ll book my flight back home lol

There's also a lot of gang stuff going on there as well, State street in the boundary line between West and East side, when that young kid was stabbed to death on Carrillo street, I was there about 30 minutes earlier, About 30 plus kids total from West side and East side were yelling each other, when I was there I was saying to my other half, this is not good and I was wondering where's the police so I stood around and waited but I couldn't wait any longer because I had to get back to work so I left, later on that day I learned of the death of one of these kids, that was gut wrenching to hear. On July 4th older gang members from West and East side they would rumble near the beach, one year there was several stabbings on, reason why there would be flood lights now on the 4th. On Gutierrez across the street from the Ace hardware, there is a school for troubled kids mostly gang members, when school is out, the East side kids will be supervised and escorted to the East side and the same will happen with the kids heading west, I will know this because I saw a friend who was escorting these kids and I asked what's up with this, he said we need to keep them separated when leaving school because they will rumble when leaving school, some thing that not many there will know about.

Dude. Get over the airport situation. Unless you are in a very few LARGE cities every other airport will be a spoke to the major hub. In the last 25 years of flying into SB and living in SB, the flights are not that bad. Coming from Florida, it is always into LAX, then an hour layover and flight to SBA. Coming from NYC, it is the same. Leaving from SBA, heading to Florida, it is either a flight to LAX, PHX, DFW and then a follow up flight. There is what I call the SBA tax. It used to be $100 a person, now it is almost $200 per person. This is not 100% of the time, but most of the time. I am flying to MCO end of June and the flight out of SBA is $85 cheaper than flying out of LAX and it connects in LAX! Flying out of SBA means being able to be dropped off at the airport, not paying $18 per day to park near LAX and take a shuttle.
In regards to the homeless, get over it. There is very little that the cities can do based upon a ruling out the federal court in Idaho. This is being fought and was recently heard by SCOTUS. As I have worked with people who help the homeless, they and the city know that there are a little under 800 homeless in the area. There are about 150k people in the area.
Your complaints about the cost of living, aka real estate is capitalism at work. People pay what it is worth to them. Just because you can't afford it, doesn't mean it is not worth that price. The best way to think of this, why is real estate in Beverly Hills more expensive than in San Antonio, TX? More people want to live in Beverly Hills than in San Antonio.
If you are complaining about the food on Cabrillo, go in two blocks between State and Garden and find the Funk Zone. There are tons of restauarants there.
In regards to surfing, you went past Rincon. A world class urfing location, about 20 miles south of Santa Barbara. In regards to warm water, even San Diego has cold water. You have to get to Florida to get warm water or down into Mexico.
Santa Barbara suffers from what a lot of coastal cities suffer from. There is no land to expand to. In the city limits, there are three spots that can be developed. One is a park downtown. Another is the LaCumbre mall, which is being reviewed now. The last spot is the golf course. LaCumbre mall had a Macys and Sears. Macys is still there. Paseo Nuevo had a Macys and Nordstroms in it. Across the street was a Lord and Taylor, diagonally there is a Marshall's and across from LaCumbre is a Ross. Near the 'mini' target. Retail is dying a slow death and the only thing that is keeping the Target open in Goleta is the college students. Ecommerce is more of the issue than anything else. The irony is that you are complaining about a 10 mile drive, aka 10-15 minutes to a store. LA has more stores, but it will take you more than 15 minutes to get there, while it is probably 3 miles away.
Lastly, people did not leave CA for the reasons you mentioned, aka, politics, taxes, crime. They left because they were able to WFH and keep their CA wage. It has not been a MASS exodus by any means. Last year, it is 91k people lost in population. For a state of nearly 40mm, that is a rounding error.

I'm sorry but I just see a bunch of boomers overreacting in the comments. Yes, there are homeless in SB-- walk down State St. and you might see 2 or 3. I walk State st. weekly and I don't see any "shuttered stores" or "vacant buildings." Tourism is actually up, and the economy here is healthy. Commercial space is expensive because of location. You know where else is expensive? San Francisco. New York City.
I've lived in Santa Barbara for decades and nothing has changed, except a slight increase in population. It's still as safe, clean and welcoming as it ever was. Is it for everyone? No, of course not. No single place is. But don't create phantom problems where there are none. If you can't stand the new generation, maybe that's a you problem.

@@SA-hz1rsSomeone is butthurt. Both states are nice. I've spent considerable time in both California and Florida and Florida is a nicer place for going to the beach. Plus for California is it offers skiing and is great for that. I would go to Mammoth. Where I live currently I can get to Denver easily and I would choose that.

The beach? With that God awful humidity and bugs everywhere? Sand fleas, giant mosquitos?
Yea, ok. How fun. Floridas sun is brutal. Plus all the random storms. Tropicalish weather is horrible in any sense.
You can actually walk around california beach towns and enjoy yourself, which is why theyre more desirable
