The need/desire of the typical person that believes in a God, that it must have some type of personality is a major qualm of mine. It's a sign, to me at least, that such a believer views there as being a separation of some kind between creator and creation. What little I know about quantum physics precludes this possibility. Then again, I'm unabashedly sympathetic to panpychism.🌝

@@mediocrates3416 I just meant the way that he conceptualized God in Ethics and refuted the widely accepted idea of God at the time. Bruno and Spinoza had similar views, but there are differences in the way they conceptualized their pantheism. I thought Spinoza's way of breaking down reality into a sort of geometric view in axiomatic form was rather appealing. I'm mainly familiar with Bruno as a sort of rebel who was martyred in the name of science and intellectualism.

Actually, that was never posed as a question. The discussion about angels was a theological discussion of the nature of angels. One of the questions was, what is the nature of angels, what is their being like? It was concluded that they do not take up any space in our physical world. And so it was commented that, so that means that an infinite number of angels can dance on the head of a pin? How much seriously, and how much humorously, who knows.
For me, the universe is god (spelt with a small 'g ),' albeit a non-personnal, amoral and an indifferent one. It doesn't give a damn what we think of it.
The Self of man is God, Our Awareness of Being. God is not "out there", You are God incarnate. God became us to experience limitation, fragmentized contraction, thus, expanding itself through this experience. God is your own wonderful human imagination. Stop wasting your time looking for God on the outside, for that is a lie, for God is housed within You as you. There is no other God outside of Self.
For god to be loved, it must die and be reborn as one of us. If god does not require love, then why would we? My sympathies are limited, but God's aren't? My time is limited but the universe is timeless? The processes of life and the formulas which govern it seem to point in the direction of a goal and it certainly seems like that goal is helping us understand each other in ways that bring us "a little closer to truth".

This guy is one of the least interesting guests in this series. The term God, with a capital g, has always meant the God of monotheism, a conscious being that caused or causes the world to be. If I change the word "God" to mean something that's not conscious and not a being, I'm not really talking about the concept of God at all. Also, speaking of ultimate reality changing over time gives Time power to change the Ultimate, which would make the Ultimate not really ultimate. Time would be the most fundamental thing. And I question Mr. Kuhn's deference to the scientific method in his inquiries. The scientific method seeks to find a precise, accurate, and measurable description of the physical world and how it works. Do we use the scientific method to measure the non-quantitative truths we seek in art, for example? Unless and until science successfully proves that consciousness is a physical thing, there is no basis for assuming it is.
I enjoyed reading what you wrote but the last sentence confused me. Are you saying that we shouldn't assume consciousness is physical, or that we shouldn't make any assumptions about it at all?
@@christianbaughn199 I believe our proper course is to say we don't know, and we really don't have any good means of estimating a probability (90/10?, 50/50?, 20/80?), at least at this point. It comes down largely to a feeling. A feeling that consciousness is not the kind of thing that can be explained, that way, or a feeling that it is the kind of thing that can, and that therefore Occam's Razor applies. Very hazy.
I concur. Great analogy with the art. All we experience and all we shall ever experience is mind/felt world/creative decision making faculties/consciousness/thing we can’t see. Without mind the scientific community wouldn’t exist, we couldn’t measure or paint objects without mind. The current (mainstream) stranglehold and underwhelmed assumption that it is just an illusion, a by product of the brain, is at odds since it appears to be our primary foundation of life. I agree but from a slightly different way round, the awareness side is prominent (since all life needs an observer and coding) and the mechanics is the interface. I am aware, I have a mind, so it makes sense to extend that, ie, none of us will ever know life without this mysterious awareness. It doesn’t make me believe in god because we don’t know what that is. But mind holds the key.

I think we need to steer away from god in the religious sense of the word. IF god exists at all then IT would most likely be the FIRST consciousness, so to speak, or if you like the "designer" which triggered evolution of both universe(s) and life itself. It's crazy that an argument as ridiculous as the one I put forth could be taken as serious! 😂 But then again, some people do make hilariously bad arguments. To be fair, I think there are some valid arguments for the existence of something like a God, but certainly none that are anywhere near conclusive. Personally, I think the reality of the Hard Problem of Consciousness is the best evidence for a "God" because it's the best evidence that materialism/physicalism is false. Even things like ESP, telekinesis, ghosts, etc. (if they were real) would be more amenable to a physical explanation than subjective, first-person, conscious experience. I mean, seriously, WTF is experience? Science can't even define experience, let alone come up with a coherent hypothesis about how it is that it could be produced by, or identical to, brain processes. That's my take.

Having different views on the god issue is the reason we have so many gods. We just can't admit that we will never know the real fabric of reality. And maybe our exsitence doesn't mean anything in the long run. Which does seem to be the case. I haven't found a god belief yet that stands up to even a shallow examination of its foundations.

However there is a level of convergency near the top of the spiritual mountain we climb so enlightenment is gained, connection with the divine occurs -- the pyramids symbolic meaning represents the differing faces, different corners of the world, and near the top the unity is found -- truly we never we disconnected, just separated; and spirituality is about reconnection: with ourselves in spirit, and others around us. In the beginning of spirituality you are dealing with the ego, right. If one seeks to reach the top, that ego baggage will only hold you back. Bruno and Spinoza had similar views, but there are differences in the way they conceptualized their pantheism. I thought Spinoza's way of breaking down reality into a sort of geometric view in axiomatic form was rather appealing. I'm mainly familiar with Bruno as a sort of rebel who was martyred in the name of science and intellectualism.

The scientific method seeks to find a precise, accurate, and measurable description of the physical world and how it works. Do we use the scientific method to measure the non-quantitative truths we seek in art, for example? Unless and until science successfully proves that consciousness is a physical thing, there is no basis for assuming it is.

To be fair, I think there are some valid arguments for the existence of something like a God, but certainly none that are anywhere near conclusive.
Personally, I think the reality of the Hard Problem of Consciousness is the best evidence for a "God" because it's the best evidence that materialism/physicalism is false. Even things like ESP, telekinesis, ghosts, etc. (if they were real) would be more amenable to a physical explanation than subjective, first-person, conscious experience. I mean, seriously, WTF is experience?
Science can't even define experience, let alone come up with a coherent hypothesis about how it is that it could be produced by, or identical to, brain processes.

@@S3RAVA3LM actually the approach to "spiritual" is so diverse that it always divides humans. If instead you approached them as human, just like yourself, regardless of belief, that would go towards unity. Your idea of unity is likely a forced identical system of beliefs, like a theocracy.

However there is a level of convergency near the top of the spiritual mountain we climb so enlightenment is gained, connection with the divine occurs -- the pyramids symbolic meaning represents the differing faces, different corners of the world, and near the top the unity is found -- truly we never we disconnected, just separated; and spirituality is about reconnection: with ourselves in spirit, and others around us.
In the beginning of spirituality you are dealing with the ego, right. If one seeks to reach the top, that ego baggage will only hold you back.
So I agree, spirituality is diverse, we start off from different corners of the planet, with 'seemingly' different beliefs and mental constructs.
