Does everything about a person disappear at death? The body? Sure, it's gone. The brain? It stops working, then dissolves. But what about awareness? Does our consciousness end forever? Nothing could be more frightening! Is there any hope? Are there ways that, conceivably, our consciousness can survive the ultimate insult?

I love how Steinhart is saying what God can and can't do. Couldn't God continue our consciousness after death? Maybe the brain isn't the generator of consciousness but the receiver? Being an agnostic , the hubris of some scientists irk me.

I personally think we only care because we need to see and be with our loved ones again. We want our family around.

The notion of not being conscious and going into oblivion is the most horrific thought imaginable.
Why would that be so bad, it's not like you would care about it. Worst would be to remain conscious and find yourself in a nightmare, where everything around you want to harm and hurt you. Oblivion would be a bliss commpared to eternal torture and suffering. But hey, if we could suffer in eternity, we should be able to enjoy it also.

More over, we kinda grow with our body, mind gradually adjust to body age and condition. Older body is not a shell but what we actually are, it's always nice to be alive, so we can't just trade one self for another version without loosing more than we gained. All i know is, death is when all this stops, i mean a person, all other living creatures and entire universe, everything will go away and never return. So who cares, it's probably better this way.
Not all in life is rational, missing someone is normal, specially mother. All humans are part of woman internal organs, when you think about it, so our mother was closest we can get to our material origin and nothing can replace her.
Doesn't need to, pain will go away, happy thoughts will return, life will became something else and this will also change memories of most bellowed ones.
There are two ways i know how we can experience our dead relatives again. First is that change i mentioned, urge to see dead mother again will transform into internal dialog, constructed from real memories, but perceived from objective personal angle. It like we come to understand seeing passed relative alive is impossible, but her personality can became our imaginary friend we talk to sometimes. Or we can see our memories from a new perspective, we couldn't understand back than.
Another way is to visualize a person we wish to see again and than it can enter our lucid dreams. This way can be kinda strange and awkward, since our dreams are projections of our inner emotions and frustrations we can't control. Ghosts can start to behave different we than expected and desired, it can seems like a mindless zombie. But dreams are also a part of healing process and will shape into something more calm, warm and home like, in time.
The Bible gives the truth. There is an afterlife.
It may simply be like going into a peaceful slumber when time does not pass, and all is fine. Nothing exists. Like before you were born.
Eternity on ones knees worshiping any given flavor of God sounds like the real hell. Especially when after three trillion years have passed and you realize, you just got started. Yikes.
Anyway, who knows. Live well and be good and kind to others. Don't let a fear of death create a fear of life.
The fact that as human beings we are all naturally curious about an afterlife, if not fearful that there might not be one, is the first clue that an afterlife can possibly exist. It’s called awareness.

@Ruby Rooker but you don’t, we all die eventually. Our soul is just energy and it doesn’t have consciousness like we do. When our brain physically dies, so do we and everything we remember about this earth, there will never be another ‘you’ again

The more time I spend around other humans the less I want to be here or even feel as if I don't belong. I believe we are to go through this human experience for a reason to gain experience and understanding to move on to a higher or lower level. If evolution is true and we are a accident then I should try and save myself all the future suffering and die because I won't care once I'm dead. I don't believe all of this is a mistake or accident. There is so much more to what we really are then any of us could possibly imagine. Live your life caring and merciful to ALL life.

I think Erich is equating consciousness to awareness. My personal consciousness is beyond my general awareness and my personal identity is likely further beyond my consciousness.
What is the different?
For me...I have experienced proof of afterlife after my Mom passed away...I met a medium who told me 11 things that only I and Mom knew...and the medium told me of an incident where I jumped the red light ...just a day before my Moms funeral...and missed a crash by just few inches...
There is no way the medium could know that...she told me my Mom's soul was with me in the car when this happened.
So...I do believe beyond doubt that soul survives death.

The evidence is pretty clear that consciousness not only transcends the brain/body, it transcends the entirety of this material "dimension." We live in a nested reality, where the physical universe is a subset of a larger reality. We are therefore "spiritual beings" having serial material experiences in order to raise the level of our consciousness quality through a process of consciousness evolution. So not only does our consciousness continue after death, it existed before our birth (all of our births and deaths). Consciousness is immortal.

If I am to have serial material experiences in order to raise my consciousness then why do I not remember my previous lives? I cannot learn from my previous lives because I do not remember them. And how can my consciousness exist before my birth when I never lived before? Did I exist before I was born? I concede, based on NDEs, that my consciousnesses may possibly continue to exist after I die, but that is because I have lived. I do not believe in reincarnation. It doesn’t make sense as long as you do not remember what you have learned from your past lives.
@@ursulakoriath5133 I agree. It also does not make sense that we would need to learn or be taught in such a primitive brutal barbaric way. As a metaphor, sadistically spanking an infant because they are weak at higher maths does not improve their learning, but may very well make it impossible. Even for various reasons. Look up the concept of zone of proximal development. There are things a student is ready to learn for the time being, and things which are yet too far out. Just pushing the student hard does not change these considerations, improve the efficiency, or reduce the suffering.

What about MIGRATING human wet-ware to digital hardware, over a period of time? Add portions of integrated digital hardware to the brain, slowly, over time. Then, once integrated sufficiently, remove portions of brain matter, slowly, over time, until the brain is gone and one's conscious continuum is fully transferred over without a severing interruption.

As I share similar existential angst and pains as Robert and incidentally study analitical philosophy of religion, I watch with hightest interest his conversations. Regarding the postmortem, I wonder if should Robert pose problem in such a way: is it at all imaginable to be fully 1st-personally recreated as ME, with all my experiences of that time, in another reality where: either I start anew from infancy or: if not from infancy, than in what age? Arbitrarily chosen by God or chosen by me? Is 20 years physicality of (let say) 75 y.o. mentality, the same person? Another issue: what law of natures are to be obligatory in such a world? If such, that I am not aging again, it means somothing completely beyond our present cognition and than I hardly am able to imagine substantial continuity between my pre-recreation and post-recreation identity. And this is what Robert postulates as a fundament of kosher survival.

A photograph is a static picture that doesn't change. Life is always changing, it is not static.
There is a fascinating video game called "Soma" where a man tries to upload himself to another body, then onto a rocket to escape, but each time the "transfer" occurs, there is a sort of "coin toss" and the actual perspective the person playing the video game takes, doesn't end up in the rocket at the end, they are stuck, back at the launch site. Someone tries to convince him that he should be happy for his copy who got away. He is not happy, much like Robert in this video. Robert is saying he wants the seat of his soul, his actual perspective to be recreated, or "rebooted", Eric doesn't seem to either get that or perhaps he doesn't care, or doesn't agree.
I didn't find this guy very smart... don't know why. But think this guy who ask questions knows more than the guy answering questions.
Knows more? The guy asking questions discussed the question, beforehand, and guides the conversation to where the guy selling his book is able to move around mysteriously to entice peiple to want to know more and buy his insane book.

Continuity of conciseness after death.
Part of your brain activity could be beyond our 4 dimensional reality (time included). Since we're not very clear about what consciousness is and how it manifests, there might be a possibility that our consciousness could be preserved in a different dimension which would obviously not apparant in our 4-D reality.
What do you guys think? I'm really open to any suggestions related to studies done in consciousness.
Hi, I've thought about a cosmic externality of consciousness too. Not supernatural, but extra-dimensional, as you say. According to Einsteinian relativity the edge of the observable universe is one and the same as the point of the big bang. Yet spacetime for us appears as a continuum rather than a singularity. Indeed the only thing we know of that can transcend this paradox between spacetime and singularity is light/photons (through length contraction, time dilation, et al). And so what is mind but a biological activity; an epiphenomenon of thermodynamics otherwise recognized as a particular complex transfer of light (visible, infrared, etc.). Thus the root of mind could hypothetically be outside of spacetime as we know it without being beyond the laws of physics as we know them.
The light pattern(s) of conscious biology PHYSICALLY transcend spacetime because they occur at the speed of light and therefore reside at both the beginning and end of time at once, in the eternal moment of the singularity. Remember that from a photon's perspective it is both emitted and is absorbed instantaneously without any passage of time relative to itself, even if it has traveled all the way across the galaxies. In the same way, there could be a unique pattern to the electromagnetic waves of the brain (and body) that open a kind of "wormhole" back to the singularity. Thus wherein we experience a "now" in tandem with a "procession".

Einstein developed two forms of Relativity: Special Relativity and General Relativity. Both are Einsteinian.

The dawn of time can be photographed from Earth, not because we sent our satelites to the dawn of time but because the dawn of time traveled from the dawn of time to now.
Spacetime is a continuum and not a singularity, if it were a singularity we would be the same place at the same time and not need to communicate.

The mind is the pattern by which your brain is structuref to transmit information to itself.
Most brains seen to have a unique processing and so interpret differently the same info.
Also, no two brains get identical input. I see a certain set of photons reflecting from something to show the shape and you see a different set of photons showing you the same object differently. The light that hits my eyes is not the same light that hits your eyes.
If we are on a street and I point at something in the distance but a lamppost is in your way, you will not see the distant thing and will have a totally different experience and infer differently than someone whose eyesight is not blocked by a lamppost.

all i can think about is just how many people and other life we forced to find this terrifying question for them selfs. how many people who never did anything wrong in their short lives who didn’t experience any pleasure of the earth and send them to kill each other condemning them to eternity of nothingness.
it's not what you like it's what truth is...we can like it or dislike it...it does not matter...the only time we worry about death and life after death is when we are awake...when we go to deep sleep we don't worry about anything because the self is not there to worry about anything...So when we die we go to deep sleep forever and worry about nothing...it's peaceful.. peaceful for no one...only peaceful.
Robert actually has a great sense of humor, but the topics he talks about don't provide much opportunity to show it. But every now and then he's says some hilarious stuff.

The guy he is interviewing is right on the mark, the interviewer keeps trying to dance around him to get another answer.
As far as dying...they now know from MRI and various studies that if you die with your brain and nervous system intact..,the process is quite violent and a struggle for the brain to survive. When it finally does die in stages ...it releases the nervous system and many times sends a death jolt to finish off the heart...almost as if a surrender. This phenomenon is not yet fully understood. So..,unless your nervous system and your brain are instantly blown to pieces...the trip to death is not a quick and pleasant one at least from a biological or physiological standpoint. That is a fact.

Did you know that there is no inherent illumination or luminosity in photons? “Light,” as such, cannot be found there. Photons are, perhaps, ‘packets’ of energy which have the properties of both spread-out waves and localized particles. Photons only take on the appearance of being luminous as they arise within consciousness, in our mind’s eye. It may be that photons are spread-out energy potentials that fill the immensity of space, and only take on the appearance of being a localized discrete particle of “light” when we become aware of them in consciousness, in this actualized awareness we call mind. Thus, you are the light of the kosmos. This “light” is only arising in us. The world outside of a mind is perfectly ‘dark,’ or empty, unactualized in any way. Of course, what else could it be? What would perceive it as illuminated, or as any “thing”?
All of our thoughts are the activity of consciousness, modulations of that consciousness, incarnations within that pure consciousness, rays shining from inside that consciousness. We are agents of that consciousness, emerging from within that consciousness. All there is to experience is the knowing of it, and that knowing is God’s own Self in us, living in us, the source of our life, the energy of consciousness itself.
We could say that God lives in us, since consciousness seems to have become localized in this particular body-mind. Or we could say that we live in God, since all that we perceive arises in that consciousness, including our body-mind. Thus, Jesus was right to say, “I am in the Father and the Father is in me” (John 14:10-11, 20). Both are true, and they are true of us as well. We are arising within God, and God is arising within us as well. Sometimes this is called “mutual indwelling,” the Father in the Son and the Son in the Father, also called perichoresis or co-inherence in Christian terminology.
God is the field of consciousness in which all knowing occurs, in which all thoughts and perceptions and feelings and sensations arise, like waves in the ocean. Our body-mind and its thoughts are like localizations within that consciousness, temporary manifestations of that Ultimate Reality, expressions of that consciousness, that being, that One.
God becomes veiled and hidden from our awareness when the thoughts that arise in and from consciousness believe they are something separate and discrete from the consciousness in which they are arising. The thoughts form a separate entity, a dualistic subjective ego, a separate self identity, an independent being, an “Adam/Eve,” which thinks it is apart from infinite nondual divine consciousness and Ultimate Reality. This seems to be the “Fall,” the beginning of duality and separateness and alienation from God’s Presence.
But how could thoughts be separate from the consciousness in which they have arisen? They can’t, but that is exactly what our thoughts and our self-identification with them think they are. It is a kind of psychological illusion. The thoughts take on their own separate identity apart from pure nondual consciousness, forming a self, a person, an entity, seemingly cut off from its own source and essence.
Once we look at it like this, it seems impossible, and that is because it is. Our ‘self’ is never actually separate from the source in which it arises, thoughts are never separate from the consciousness in which they emerge, the wave is not separate from the ocean. The thoughts that make up our ‘self’ are just finite actualizations or relative localizations of the infinite potential of absolute consciousness, or Divine Being, or Ultimate Reality. In Christian symbolism we call this the incarnation of God. In Buddhism it is the Dharmakaya that incarnates as the Nirmanakaya Buddha. In Hinduism it is Brahman that manifests itself as each Atman. God becomes incarnate in reality, in the flesh, embodied, in us and all things.
There is no time, no space, nowhere we can go, nowhere we can be, that will be outside of this Presence of God, outside of this consciousness, beyond the borders of God, or the Ultimate Reality. God is always present, and is Presence itself, awareness itself, consciousness itself, the “spirit of life” within us, from which we derive all being, all knowing, all our substance, every thought, every sensation. It all arises in God. This is perhaps why, in order to pierce the veil and know God directly, contemplative practices such as meditation help train us to transcend thought, to go back to the source of thought itself, beyond all thoughts of self, to recognize that from which it all arises, this pure open vastness of nondual unitive at-one consciousness.
Do you see why we cannot “think” God? Nothing that arises in consciousness as a thought will be that consciousness in which it is arising. No relative finite manifestation in consciousness can be the absolute pure infinite consciousness, even though every manifestation or relativization or actualization of that consciousness is made up of nothing other than that consciousness. God is Present even while we are trying to comprehend God, even in the midst of that very comprehension. God is what makes that attempt at comprehension even possible. God is the very field in which we are trying to know God. When we let go of the trying, the conceptualization, surrendering the thoughts that are trying to know themselves, and rest in the pure still silent open awareness of being, that is when the realization of God may dawn on us, as us.
Every night we die. Next day a new pattern is created. A nee version of myself that only thinks its the sameone because of memories. So when you read this messages think u were borned probably in the last 24 hours and ur gonna die probably before 24 hours. The brain produces a new pattern(me) every day

if this is possible even only in principle, or even if uploading your mind to software is possible, in both cases, it prove that their is an existence of a soul which is not depend on the physical matter, at least not depend on the physical body, as we currently able to observe and understand it.
Speculations about transferring consciousness to different organisms or bodies fall within the realm of science fiction and philosophical thought experiments. They are not supported by empirical evidence or our current understanding of consciousness and biology.
What is the difference between a clone where every cell that comprises you has been replicated, and you who have regenerated all of you cells as to not be composed of any of the original cells that comprised you? Is it only the difference between one and two?

How you think depends entirely on your life experience. Even if you replicated someone's brain, you cannot replicate their life experience. It would not be the same.

You cannot replicate or duplicate things like the effects of gravity or the positions of the planets on the intricate Neuro connections and chemical signaling in the brain. Nothing can do that. Even if you could "cloud" base your experience, it would be a 2 dimensional image of a physical representations of a 3 dimensional experience. It would be like looking at a drawing or painting of what I could compare to a series of MRI images with smells and sounds......You tell me which one you would trust to gather information from.

Yes, in the extreme. As much as I love life, I want it to be totally over when I die. Personal extinction.
We cannot accept that we will die some day. Yet we know we will. So, we imagine that something about us has to live on after death since we believe that our soul is so important. We did not ask to exist. So, our existence is not essential, not fundamental to start with. So, why would it all in a sudden become essential after death? We develop a purpose for our existence very early on in life and through life. Neuroscientists know that our brain stores and manages our consciousness. When our brain will die, our consciousness will vanish even though it is immaterial. What about our soul? Every definition of it leads me to believe that it is stored in the brain, possibly within our consciousness. So, our soul will vanish too. Our belief in an afterlife is for personal reasons, not good enough a reason.
Maybe but that is irrelevant also. Why not a continuation of life? It will happen throughout the universe. We will understand more when we learn quantum entanglement.

Is this the same "Closer to Truth" that I have seen on cable TV? I had to stop watching that show because I realized I was smarter.
I had a NDE as a child. I became aware of energy and light beings around me that became my parents. That is because people were harsh and violent, so I ran and hid. These energy beings that I heard and felt were compassionate. I knew there was no such thing as death then, but I was not appreciated at all. Fast forward to my late 20's, I find quantum physics books. Death is dependent on solidity and NOTHING is solid. Everybody is being lied to that doesn't understand how we are eternal energy and light beings now. This energy and light forms the holographic patterns that we are, but there are a lot of people that want this kept a secret.
Quantum physics proves that everything everywhere is conscious. Since we are not solid, then how are we conscious? There is knowledge within the smallest of the small. Otherwise, how does it exist? From the book "The Quantum World" written by the physicist Kenneth Ford, I found these words: 'magically bursting forth are quarks spinning billions of times a second as 3 points of light, forming what are called protons and neutrons'. These protons and neutrons are the core of the atom. We consist of 7 billion billion billion atoms, all of them spinning super fast as energy and light as our souls create us. Creation is constant. This existence is NOT at all what is being taught. Yet, people continue to be brainwashed by solidity ideas.
Why are all of you so stuck on thinking that you are biological and physical? People that don't understand quantum physics teach this. The stupid are torturing this world. I was severely abused by these stupid people. E=mc2 means energy equals energy. Solidity is never found in those billion dollar colliders. Nothing is solid or physical. We are holograms immersed within a holodeck. When nothing is solid or physical, then it is an image. Read the book "Hands of Light" written by the physicist Barbara Brennan. She wrote that we are eternal, holographic, multidimensional and electromagnetic. She sees people as holograms and she isn't the only one. This book is full of pictures showing us how we are holograms constantly being created. We are also electrical magnetic energy field vibrational beings. This is what atoms are and we consist of 7 billion billion billion atoms. At what is called death, those quarks accelerate our consciousness out of these bodies.

Al Garnier, I meant what happens to the soul if it exists at all. No one can say for certain there’s an afterlife just as no one can be certain we cease to be after death.
Al Garnier, not one scientist can say with absolute certainty that we cease to be just as the afterlife believers can’t say with certainty the afterlife exists. All of this is our living beliefs and opinions of what we think lies beyond death. From a physical perspective it appears one ceases to be. But you’re wrong in saying we (scientists) know for certain that we cease to be. That’s very ignorant. Only the dead know what’s beyond death. That’s always been the case and will always be. Saying nothing happens is just as valid a guess as reincarnation or an afterlife because you’re not dead. You’re still living. We’ll never know what happens to us after death til our time comes. Everything regarding this are beliefs and opinions, not fact. And that’s okay. Some of life’s mysteries are not meant to be solved.

No one ever asks what happens before birth. I wonder why the question is always about what happens after death.
Because people think that this life is our first life where we suddenly burst into consciousness and people think that has a chance at being carried on after death. If you could make a clone of a person with the exact same genes and you could add all the memories and physical sensorial events of a lifetime in the clone, you can be reborn and think again like the old yourself. In fact you would believe you are resurrected. It is just a matter of mapping and recording all the brain memories and sensation rememberances. This will be done someday. Like a full body and mind transplant to carry on a new life. Or, maybe the physical support can be a robot? this doesn't seem too farfetched, just needs to have a very precise and complete memory recording. In the case of the robot, there is an added problem which is mapping the physical senses and motor sensations from the brain/CPU to the body. Once this is done, you don't get to live after death but can live an eternal life here (as long as there are robot parts of course...).

There is no such thing as life after death in the same way there isn't life before being born. Life is just a special, local state of the universe. If you give matter enough time and some fortunated conditions, matter will arrange itself in such a way that will become conscious. I believe that a better question is if there are other levels of conscioussnes..
like the concept of re-instantiation. Consciousness is immortal. So births and deaths are just different 'instances' of our consciousness. This is exactly like the spins which are different instances (spin up and spin down) of the same particle (electron).
I think you can repeat this life over again . You can reset . And replay. That way you can have this exact conciousness over again. If you choose not to relive this world in your body. You will have no memory of this world. You olay with another completely different avatar and different reality.

This is closest to what I personally believe, though I might differ in some ways. We perceive ourselves as a continuity, and when we die, there is a radical break in that continuity. Like he is saying, there could be endless copies of us with identical experiences, but they could not exist in the same context, have the same history, be brought about in quite the same way.
Of course, maybe there is some way that the continuity is preserved, a kind of continuity we cannot understand, that would genuinely link the point of our death to a concrete manifestation of rebirth.
Even if that is the case, I think we must accept that what I would call wholly "myself", is truly an ephemeral thing, though perhaps there is some small element which is eternal (but which we would certainly not identify as our "whole" self.)
This is what I believe, I am inspired by Chinese conceptions of the soul, for example in Taoism.
I believe in a kind of monism, where what is eternally "ours" is the smallest indivisible unit of "stuff", (what the ancient Greeks would have called an atom). When you die, what is eternally yours changes its relationship to all other things, and who knows what happens from there.
Your "soul" has the potential to experience all sorts of lives that you would not call your own, and you might call that "reincarnation," your soul living a life that is not the one that you identify with now.
In "rebirth", the soul reaches a state which is in continuity with the death of one of it's past lives. This is what forms a continuity between the death of this "me" and a particular rebirth of "me", even though, as the speaker says, there are obviously infinitely many versions of the person called "Alec Featherston", who realize all their potentials, which I could not experience in my finite life, even if I lived for eternity, since you can only experience eternity one step at a time.

We are aware of a first person self that continues, even though the conscious awareness is throttled through anesthesia. The question is where are our memories resident. If you think they are only resident in a material brain, then these die also when the brain decays. I think that memories must be recorded in an energy signature, in a field of energy that is a spirit-body. It doesn’t have to rely on materialism to retain the memory signatures it acquired during human lifetime. If consciousness doesn’t exist with it’s own memory and continuity, then what is the purpose of living a human lifetime? Seems an awful waste of time and ability to learn, in that case. I think we will have a memory of a human lifetime, but God can resurrect us as a being in another dimension of experiential existence apart from the human form. We don’t need to be human again to continue our unique selfhood. Consider the stillborn baby situation - even though the body grew and was intended to continue, why did it never animate with apparent human responsiveness? I propose that the spirit body never cleaved with the pineal gland, hypothalamus, and other transmit-receive structures in the brain.
QuestioNumber3, indeed - NDEs are some of the best evidence for something that exists apart from the body, especially when one floats above the body and can see it, along with all of the other activities they see and “hear” going on, including things said by others in another waiting room. There are some very good experiments by neuro-psychiatrists and physicians that show the sum of consciousness is far greater than the material “centers” in the brain can account for. For example, which part makes the decision to go shopping vs. watch a movie, for the purpose of entertainment? The brain is largely responsible for operations of the body and sensory processing, but memories and complex thinking seem not to reside in specific centers alone.
I myself have had anesthesia and it does seem odd that you leave awareness and are then immediately back. There seems to have been no time lost, except for a mild short blackout, but you realize this is not logical, because you are no longer in a surgery room, but awake in recovery room, with physical things like bandages and stitches which would have taken time to install. The anesthetic somehow shuts down the timing circuits in the brain, without which we cannot create or store “earthly”, or bodily memories to retrieve (never uploaded). I don’t recollect any memories of things happening during the surgery, so were these things stored in a consciousness at all? The NDE seems to be experiencing without physical eyes or ears, yet somehow still in this earth dimension. There must be a crossing over point when consciousness “lets go” of experience through the body, and switches to it’s own “spirit body” awareness. Maybe?

The soul has its own set of senses (or awarenesses). For example, many NDEers report that they have 360 degree spherical visual field and can see as much or as little as they choose to filter. When coupled to the brain, the soul in normal conscious awareness can only get what is available in the narrow field from the eye. It’s a matter of where the soul’s attention is placed. Thus, through meditation the awareness can be expanded to “see” much more, also. Focus through the brain and it’s connected sense organs allows the soul to connect to experiences in the material world.

You should know that before spilling ignorance about religious beliefs. Theistic Religions do not claim death is an illusion rather a passing to another life. You didn't understand what Steinhart was saying. Steinhart WAS talking about the ego surviving, but Robert didn't follow. Steinhart's point is that your ego is simply what your brain generates. There's nothing special about the particular instance of your brain _except_ of course for the fact that at present we don't know how to make a copy of it. But if I could make a copy of your brain it would have the same ego. Your ego is a consequence of what your brain does, not what it is.

If your ego ceases to exist, there is no meaningful sense in which it can be said that _you_ still exist. Steinhart seems to me incorrect and actually doesnt understand what 'first person consciousnrss' is. FPS is theoretically a continuous entity that accumulates experience and emotions and reflects on it and acts on it. This process can happen in the physical projection of a specific lifetime or beyond space time in a non material dimension or once again in another space time projection like this life. There is nothing irrational about that. Its hist a matter of finding out whether that is true or not. Steinhart's view of personality is just materialist/reductionist. Psychologically this arises from his self hatred which he admits. He wants a transformation of consciousness not a persistence of it. That's what he says. This means he just wants to die and be somebody else who doesn't remember what he once was. Whereas I, like Kuhn, want to continue DEVELOPING myself and accept my current defective state as work in progress towards a superior state which a God, if It exists, would presumably want me to work towards. If we were able to upload our consciousness and place it in a simulated existence , and soon we may be able to do so - who is there to say that it isn’t already being done by more advanced beings in our universe - did they included us in this post existence extension, are we somehow managed by them who claim to be ‘gods’ yet are no more than advanced beings as we could someday be if they were to permit our natural evolution to run its coarse? I think this had ET written all over it.
Or, we are just a duality between an infinite and finite self. That awareness is all that has ever existed. Therefore, as an infinite being, the best way to experience would be to live finite lives. Therefore, this is just one of the many experiences you have. I think the real question is why? Why would you choose to be here? The only thing with this model of my belief is why would people choose bad experiences? But i realized that's the same with this life... why do people do what they do? Also, 100 years max of any experience is a blink. Therefore, it's conceivable given infinite time... some infinite consciousness would try out a bad experience... why not? And interestingly, good experiences should be more than bad experiences. Evil people should be less than good people bc most of the time a consciousness would likely choose a good experience... and that's what we see.

Therefore, you would know you have one experience, then another. And who knows, your altered state may be beneficial to another persons experience, which is one reason of many you may do that.

I know this is an older video, but honestly wanting a "continuity of consciousness" is kind of funny. I mean, sure when we go to bed each night we expect to wake, but when we do wake we essentially have to "boot up" our memories to maintain our sense of identity. When you're unconscious, you're no one from a subjective standpoint. Then when you wake up, you recall yourself.
When I sleep, I know who I am and squat down on purpose so I can fly. I can even wake myself up when dreaming. It is true that I can sleep for a couple of hours without dreaming and am dead.

He seems to only answer the question with "assuming there is a god, your life could be recreated". That's a big assumption. My question would then be, "why do you assume there is a god?" The interviewer (can't remember his name right now) has quite a few interviews with scientists and philosophers who conclude (correctly or not) that there is not a god. Does that view change the answer to the original question?

The believers of the Abrahamic and Christian faiths mostly accept or understand resurrection as a new physical creation on a new physical earth rather than a continuity of consciousness as spirit raised up to eternal life in the spiritual realm. The apostle Paul, in his understanding of the Scriptures as typological based narratives, however wrote his epistles in the New Testament explaining that resurrection is the regeneration of our old self to new self in our same physical mortal body as a result of the indwelling of the Spirit of Christ within us, so that we live in obedience to the Spirit rather than our flesh. This gives us righteous standing before God so that our spirit is raised up to the Body of Christ in the spiritual realm (heaven). Our consciousness is thus our spirit being made alive eternally in the spiritual realm. The space-time physical realm (planet earth and the universe) will not endure and it is impossible for eternal life to exist in it!

The way we are is connected to our body, that's why nobody would like to exist in eternity with all what we don't like about it or our body can't do. He is right from that perspective, eternal life would be a hell without perfect health and happiness.
Another dimension of a problem is our surroundings, imagine we would be born as a grown ups into completely unknown nature, where nothing would look familiar, nice and friendly, only way we could enjoy is living inside some sort of a space capsule and never go out.
This give us interesting combination, why not live like gods observing reality trough our space ship instruments. This is how continuation of life inside a machine would probably looks like, it could be great until we couldn't stand that no more and step outside. Life is also about social relations and exploration, this is why existence is so unique and exciting.

Jerry Rogers the best explanation of what happens when you die was from a genius kid who was asked “what happens when you die?” His reply; “I can’t know for sure, but I do know that energy can’t be destroyed”, which is what we are. Think of smashing an atom or quark... it just becomes smaller particles and so on and so on... etc. we are all just star dust. Regarding NDE, there is a counter argument that it’s just chemicals released in or brains, such as endorphins, dopamine, etc.

This entire conversation lost its focus, contains no logic whatsoever. Once again, the all too familiar egocentric “wish thinking” plays into the discussion. Let me put it this way. All any of us would really wish for is to see our loved ones again. Well, if there is no “self” that survives death, then what’s the point of desiring to survive in the first place? It’s simple. When we die, we simply cease to exist for eternity. There can be no sadness, no grieving, no happiness, no beauty, no nothing because there was never a purpose for our existence to begin with. We are here by mere chance. The universe doesn’t know we’re here, doesn’t care when our species goes extinct. End of story. Occum’s razor and the 2nd law of thermodynamics backs it up. Logic is science and critical thinking is mandatory.
