- Kate Dear, the CEO of Fêtewell, is a wedding-venue designer who bought a bank that closed down in 2015. While renovating the space, she found 114-year-old tile floors beneath the carpeting. Kate restores the tiles by stripping the carpet glue and sanding and polishing the floors.

Would like to go back in time and ask them why the heck they would cover up that beautiful tile in the first place! Wow reminds me of the recent discovery of The 500-Year-Old Frescoes Discovered During Restoration of the Prince’s Palace of Monaco!
I agree but when you think about it that carpet probably helped saved the tiles and preserve them

I did a side job, 30 years ago, in Berkley California in an old old apartment building lobby. We found beautiful tiles like yours, under the old 50's linoleum! It was beautiful! DEFINITELY a labor of love!

My mother had wall to wall carpet put in our house.......over maple hardwood I thought she was nuts for doing that......... you did a nice job on that floor it's beautiful

Why would you cover up such beautiful tile?
Honestly, a bank would cover up that tile flooring because of safety issues. Wet floors are slippery, especially when they're wet. Lots of senior citizens still got _into_ the bank to do their banking business. Slippery floors are a constant threat of falls & lawsuits. Whereas thick ugly carpeting is much better for them to clean & maintain high safety standards. Look on the brightside, all that nasty carpet & glue completely saved that beautiful tile & grout. Now they can be enjoyed for decades to come by the new owners & visitors. Sometimes we get lucky & the ugly new, protects the old beautiful. If I'm _ever_ fortunate enough to visit the area, I WILL be making a point to coming & visit those floors!

I will never understand why people cover over the old tile floors
Because there was a time when wall to wall carpet was the "in" thing. There are a lot of gorgeous hardwood floors that are covered by that stuff today. My house is 106 years old and I pulled out the carpet and restored the floors.
