    I think that Guru Guru had the Dragon Quest Curse, "You're only popular in Japan". And that's sad because this show is amazing.

      Ironic. Because the author started out writing the official 4 Koma manga for Dragon Quest before his editors told him "why not write an original story that pokes fun at the tropes?"

      Anime from this period of time where seasonal anime could be followed, so circa 2011-present, don't sell all that well on physical unless they're MEGA popular. I'm hoping that changes once these series get older, I'd love a Blu-ray of this 🥺

    In South America Mahoujin guru guru is known as "Los caballeros del Kodai" where sapari faeries are called the "Confussion faeries (Las hadas confusión)" Nike is named by Kukuri as "El señor caballero" the final Boss is known as "el demonio Taro" until the last original episodes of the series where he's renamed as "el Señor Ghiri". This series was my childhood between 1997-99 and I never saw an anime with that style that make me laugh a lot... Until I saw Konosuba.

  • @ryunocore
    @ryunocore 6 лет назад +1

    Excellent video, but there's a chance the filler did not affect the original manga at all. I worked for a little while with a Japanese editor on a potential serialization and pretty much any decision with direction in the publication I was writing for was decided several weeks ahead. For example, I was supposed to have an ending for both arcs and the manga planned at all times in case of cancellation every 6 chapters. Planning ahead and divulging information to anime staff isn't unheard of either, a recent example being Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei, where all openings had references to the story's major plot twist in spite of the fact that twist was a secret for years.

    • @CaribouCoon
      @CaribouCoon  6 лет назад

      Thank you! Like I briefly touched on, Doki Doki Densetsu actually did what you're talking about in it's anime original ending, though that was of content that was likely released months prior. I had reason to believe this wasn't the case with 1994 based on how long it was between when that content first aired (never mind written) and when that showed up in the manga (close to two years of difference, while it was a monthly chapter release, I don't expect the author planned THAT far ahead in such a way to corroborate with the anime, RIGHT DOWN TO AKUMA KUKURI'S DESIGN? Really?).
      There's also some not so concrete evidence I have when it comes to this interview with Shoko Nakagawa had with the author, and how she confessed growing up as a fan through watching the 1994 anime. This implies the anime had a strong influence on the fan base for Guru Guru, and this is actually reinforced in 2017's final episodes (which I saw after I recorded this video) where you hear 1994's first ED as an insert song (something I've NEVER seen an anime do!) but ALSO included story elements (specifically Nike and Raid's fight) that originated in 1994 and weren't even included in the manga! So I think the author had great incentive to incorporate those story elements because the 1994 anime was that important and nostalgic to fans of this property.

    Thanks for the recommendation. I’m 4 episodes in and really enjoying this show, it’s fast paced, the characters are great, and it’s hilarious.
    It’s interesting to note how the anime affects the manga’s content. The most notable example I’ve seen found is in Detective Conan where 8 characters debut in anime original content before their first appearance in the manga.
    Four of them I would consider notable characters (one of them ends up showing in nearly 300 chapters), so it’s pretty fascinating to see it happen in a different context.

    • @CaribouCoon
      @CaribouCoon  6 лет назад +1

      That IS really cool! I would expect Detective Conan's anime and manga to correlate with each other since they've each been running for so long.

  • @MADKapo
    @MADKapo 5 лет назад +1

    I like how this relates to a show I'm closer to: Boruto.
    Everyone likes to trash the anime because of its original content, but honestly I love it. It really makes me care about the characters more than anyone that just reads the manga would, and it directly impacts the canon stuff because many events are referenced in it. I wish people would appreciate that more.

    • @CaribouCoon
      @CaribouCoon  5 лет назад +1

      Yes isn't it something like Dragon Ball Super where the anime is sorta meant to get super ahead of the manga? Almost like the manna isn't the source but the adaptation? Tho they also happens a good deal, which would probably be interesting to look into...

  • @user-oc5mw3fe3x
    @user-oc5mw3fe3x 3 года назад +2

    Well, it’s not quite true that the manga “adapted” the anime original contents. Etō sensei supplied ideas he had in his head to the anime staff that was going to be introduced later properly in the manga but not yet. Therefore the anime predates the manga in some aspects but in fact they were not the anime’s original ideas.
    Also, about the Doki Doki anime ending in a weird way, it was originally planned to be a year long series but canceled due to low popularity (which was heartbreaking to Etō sensei, reportedly) if I recall correctly.
    There were materials for fans other than the manga/anime themselves that covered these information but I myself was not THAT into it at that time, so all these above are hearsay.

    • @CaribouCoon
      @CaribouCoon  3 года назад +1

      That's interesting, yeah there was pretty little info about this series in English, since it's never been brought to the US. There aren't even any English scans of the manga, I had to use Italian scans to even SEE the manga haha

    • @user-oc5mw3fe3x
      @user-oc5mw3fe3x 3 года назад +1

      @@CaribouCoon Yeah I was surprised and glad to find out that someone had covered it at all in English. In Japan it was a very popular manga - drawing magical circles on school grounds is a fond memory shared among a certain generation of former kids. There were even Super Famicom adaptations. So the recent anime garnered decent attention too. Back then there were many personal fan sites about Guru Guru in Japanese (from which I gathered most of the information) but I don’t know how many of them is still up.
      Peeking into the English speaking part of the Internet I feel like the expanse of Japanese manga/anime is still not too well known, I really appreciate what you do on your channel!

  • @FullmoonPhantom-dn2sr

    i might be in the minority, but i thought i would enjoy Guru Guru more if the pacing wasn't as fast. i did reallly enjoy guru guru even more so since i just finished 17-24 over the last 2 days, but i think the pacing was too fast for me. maybe if i had binged the whole thing it could be different, but i felt like i missed out on a few things because it was too fast. i might watch the older version just to see if i might prefer them to 2017 pacing. though 2017 was very fun and even funny in the last 17-24 episodes i binged through. (i wasn't laughing for most of the series, but maybe that was a seasonal issue and can be fixed through binge.) great video. you're becoming one of my favorite channels to watch. you're so informative and i really liked your 'how to get anyone into anime' video.

    • @CaribouCoon
      @CaribouCoon  6 лет назад

      Thank you!
      They do skip a few things that were in the manga but I took pretty much all of that as fat being trimmed, they really do stitch certain arcs very succinctly, like ep 21 I believe (the time loop island). A slower pace to the last few episodes may make do for some excellent gravitas, but I should mention that especially in that last third 2017 has anime original content of it's own that really helps pace everything out. That two way duel in ep 23 with Nike v Raid and Kukuri v Kaya was almost entirely original, and I say almost because Nike fighting Raid in the penultimate episode was actually taken from the 1994 anime, that wasn't even in the manga! I would've mentioned it but I was in the middle of making the video when that episode aired.
      But yea 1994 in particular has a great feel to it that you might be looking for! :)

    Very interesting video, with great editing as always! I wonder if there are other comprable examples of media adaptations having this influence, where the original stuff in the adaptation gets recontextualized into the main work because the author liked those aspects. The closest example I can think of is how elements the Batman comics appropriated elements from its various adaptations -- like changing Mr. Zero to Mr. Freeze or bringing in Harley Quinn -- but that isn't quite along the same lines as Guru Guru's "Cool Pose" and the like.
    Also, thank you, THANK YOU, for covering this anime and part of why it's so phenomenal. Guru Guru was so much fun that I often had to pause it because I was laughing so hard that I literally started coughing. I share your hope that people come back to this in the future and give it the chance it deserves, similar to how (at least I think, I'm very new to anime & not quite sure) Lupin III or Nichijou got more popular after they stopped airing. In the meantime, I'm gonna try & spread around this textbook definition of a hidden gem.

    Joke executions were so much better in the original, and lots of gags were sadly left out. Sure, I'm grateful for the 2017 version but I only wish everything didn't feel so rushed.

    • @CaribouCoon
      @CaribouCoon  5 лет назад

      I didn't give enough examples to demonstrate what I meant by 94's pace in comparison, like I probably could've played a few jokes side by side and showed how much longer they were dragged out in OG and Doki Doki. I honestly found a good deal of the "arcs" a slog in the first two adaptations, but maybe that was because I would watch 17 first and see the Fairy arc get started and finished in one episode, and then have to watch the same material again only stretched to like 5 episodes, and out of those they cut maybe 5 or 8 jokes? I'm more let down by 17 cutting certain arcs out COMPLETELY, particularly later ones that will NEVER get animated now, but overall I found it a net positive if it meant we saw the whole story in this modern seasonal era where even 2 cour anime are kinda rare.

    If you didn't know, I once read Hiromu Arakawa also adapted some elements from 2003 FMA into canon and even claimed that she wouldn't have any idea how the series would've ended without it. Example is: (MANGA AND BROTHERHOOD SPOILERS)
    Edward loses his ability to perform alchemy in 2003 which also happens in the manga and brotherhood in a different context. In 2003 he lost it because he was sent to our world, a world without alchemy, while in Arakawa's canon, he lost it due to sacrificing it in exchange for his brother (which is technically the exact same reason as in 2003).

      100%, I was just responding to a guy saying it was ludicrous to adapt "5.7 chapters per ep" or 300ch/52 eps, which is just not how adaptation works. With the full scope of the series they'll be able to know which aspects are most important to the story as a whole and tell all of it efficiently. Obviously they won't include everything, but there's always the manga which at the end of the day is the thing this anime was made for haha

    Awesome video, I really enjoyed the 2017 as well. Mother's Basement encouraged me to continue it (or try it, I can't remember now if I'd started watching it before then), since I kind of left it for a few months. That was mainly due to the occasional gross jokes and I hadn't really watched enough yet for the characters to grow on me, but after finishing it, while I wouldn't say it was perfect or anything, it was a really entertaining watch that had a lot of good comedy. Plus the openings and endings were great, I especially loved the second ending, I'm not sure why.

    There is also a case for something like One Piece which leaves a lot of stuff out of the manga and leaves notes to the anime team to fill in. This is confirmed by Eichiro Oda btw. So as bad as the adaptation of that particular show gets, it adds to the experience since it is a part of the canon that is ADDED to the anime, which is also cool to talk about!

      I'm aware of this but wasn't when I made this video, I agree it really gives the anime value and is a win-win for Oda since he wants to actually FINISH One Piece lol

    I was just in the middle of watching it. It's great but usually in the first parts of the episode are kind of boring because it focuses on the main characters, when I really like the world and all of the wacky stuff in it. I've had some of the hardest laughs with this anime.
    Also Girl's Last Tour is AOTY.
    EDIT: I shitted on Kukuri for no reason in the original comment and redacted it.

    I think the main reason this works, is because it is a comedy. So jokes can be cut without effecting the story.

    • @CaribouCoon
      @CaribouCoon  6 лет назад +1

      Absolutely true, though it stands to mention the MAJORITY of jokes have to do with story relevant things, so oftentimes cutting jokes would also mean cutting some story bits. However what also saves time is the SPEED at which a joke lands. Either you dwell on a joke and have every character react to it before moving on (94 and Doki Doki would do this a LOT), or like in 17 the joke lands and they're already off to the next set up.

    when you talk about giving filler a chance, its a comedy anime, the only thing it has to be its funny, filler in most cases ruins characters and story arcs, but of course you have to watch it to judge it properly a good example of good filler could be the one piece movie by mamoru hosada, because the characters and long running plot lends perfectly to a filler story

    • @CaribouCoon
      @CaribouCoon  3 года назад

      Or G8 in the case of One Piece, which is funny cause Hosoda directed an episode in that arc (I have a video on it).
      But I don't think fans usually make that distinction for comedy anime. It's really just "unga bunga filler bad" by default. Besides I don't think GuruGuru only has to be funny, it's an action adventure series like other Shonen anime of it's ilk (came from a shonen magazine after all).

    I started watching Guru Guru in the 90's and I've always loved it. Sadly in Italy manga publication stopped midway, due to poor selling wtf! I really can't understand how people are fine watching tens of copycat fanservice-based anime, with the same 3 or 4 stereotype tsundere/yandere/kuudere/bullshitdere characters and the shallow plot someone can think about.

      oh yea! Hence why I'm excited. I think a season 2 is all that'll do it unless the author just keeps going. s1 adapted a little ways into vol 4 and there's almost 7 volumes released. just gotta complete it soon and we can have a nicely paced 2nd cour of it I imagine.

    • @CaribouCoon
      @CaribouCoon  6 лет назад +2

      It seems that's the case with Mob Psycho, the first season adapted up to chapter 50 and ONE just ended it at 109 chapters, so another 12 ep season could make it complete, which would be FIRE.

    Why yes, 1999 Hunter x Hunter is KINO. And even after the budget was cut the last arc is somehow more interesting than the reboot, which just takes the arc and speedruns it assuming you know what happens.
    And yes, I seen the wonderful 1080p fan upscale with colo(u)r correction.

      Hee hee, well since the anime was subbed I didn't HAVE to read it exactly, just see at what point all the story bits happened in what chapters. I actually had to go digging and turns out there's ITALIAN scans of the whole thing. But unfortunately no, it's not english translated really. Also, I happened to import 3 of the volumes and can read a LITTLE bit of moon lol

    • @niello5944
      @niello5944 6 лет назад

      Caribou Coon. Off the top of my head, these are some I personally know of:
      Saint Seiya has multiple occasions of this. For example, an anime original character Ohko that appeared in a short filler of the anime later inspired the personality and appearance of another character Dohko which appeared later on in the manga. This was in the 1980s. Pretty sure Masami Kurumada also did this for his other manga as well (so Ring no Kakero, B'T X and/or Fuuma no Kojirou), I saw one of his fans mentioned it.
      Fullmetal Alchemist had a case where Maes Hughes wasn't supposed to have much to do with the story after you-know-what-happened. However, his popularity from the 2003 anime fillers which expands his screen time and role influenced Hiromu Arakawa to tie him in to major story elements later on. Including the whole revenge thing by Roy Mustang.
      More recently in 2016-17 Sousei no Onmyouji anime by Pierrot featured a mascot character Kinako and integrated him into the story from the first episode. Later on well after the anime started airing, despite being unpopular, the character was officially introduced in the manga as part of the more recent arc.
      There are also others. Here's a good amount of them:
      www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/6n61vq/has_there_ever_been_an_instance_of_filler_content/
      Edit: Also pretty sure it was most common back when long running anime was the majority of what got produced because fillers were just that much more prevalent.

    • @CaribouCoon
      @CaribouCoon  6 лет назад +1

      This is great, though I don't imply in the title nor in the video itself that was singular to Guru Guru. It's an example I found in the adaptation process that I found to be very interesting. The community at large still swears against anime original content, and the fact other content like this exists doesn't make my points in the video moot. Nor is it clickbait because I deliver exactly what the title implies, I have to convince people to click the video somehow, calling it something bland like "The Adaptation of Mahoujin Guru Guru" was not going to do this video that I've worked hard to make any favors. It's the name of the game man.

    • @RogerSmith2004
      @RogerSmith2004 6 лет назад

      Bringing up Ring no Kakero, B'T X, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Sousei no Onmyouji is kind of irrelevant, since all of those anime adaptations came out after Mahoujin Guruguru (1994), which your whole point was "This hasn't been done before".
