I've been massively jealous of cappers ever since I first got into anime blogging. I tend to watch things in more of a haze and my reaction time and keyboard layout recognition are not very good. I tend to literally think "I want a screencap of that" but I don't have the button on-hand or don't react in time and don't want to scroll back because I really hate pausing or rewinding unnecessarily. I've long fantasized about just downloading every show I've ever loved, and then going through them and meticulously collecting gifs and screencaps until I have everything I need
Why did youtube place this video in my front page even though I had never seen a video from this channel before and the video was posted 5 mins ago? Enjoying it though
That's really quite fascinating. Screencapping isn't something that I would ever think to do myself, but I really love the idea of sharing those random little shots with others. Excellent video, and as always very great at evoking a specific feeling. Please keep up the great work!
Back when I was in elementary and middle school I got my first iPod touch(THE first iPod touch)and then I found out there were sites that would stream free anime, and let me tell you I screencapped shots like these all the time. I don’t remember most of them, but I remember only a few from “a certain magical index” and “darker than black”. There were these moments within those two anime that just caught my eye with how a moment stretched itself out and when I didn’t think the animator would take a chance like that. Example:in darker than black, there’s this detective and she’s been following the trail of events happening with the main character, and the entire season he’s always just out of her reach. So, in the finale, there’s a moment that has her standing in the middle of the road looking down a straightaway leading into the dim lit city as the sun is setting... but she doesn’t realize the m.c. is right down that road heading OUT of the city. I screen capped that because every time I looked at it I felt like I understood something about that moment that nobody else did.
That snippet at the end already got me hyped because I've been watching every anime that Tomino has made from Zambot 3 to G-reco. I only have about 10 episodes of Daitarn 3 left and then this two year long project is finished.
Its actually kinda hilarious how much this nailed about how I tend to watch any anime I'm watching solo. I'm quite the heavy screencapper of anime, as well as ffxiv, and have enjoyed the screencapspam channel on "Definitive anime chat...thing" for years. Never been an active member of the community aside from partaking in some of the nadja and early yume no crayon oukoku groupwatches near the start of the server, but I can't help but randomly get drawn back to dump a collage of moments into screencap spam. I feel screencapping gives anime staying power for me, allowing me to compartmentalize and really consider what I find striking about a work. It also gave me a greater laypersons appreciation of shot composition and framing. Looking back at shots that were the most striking to me I can end up finding similarities that give me insight into what I love about a work and the medium. Anyway, what I really want to say is that I'm happy to see this part of anime culture discussed, and think the slideshow presentation helps to drive home the power that these shots have. P.S. Love all the Nadja screencap representation, just started a rewatch in part to rebuild my screencap collection that I lost with an old computer dying.
Wonderful video, I'm not heavily involved in any discord communities myself but you've captured what screencapping means to me. I think I started doing it when I first started watching Sailor Moon. The background art was beautiful and there are many comedic moments that I just wanted to preserve. Fast forward to now and I can't really go through an episode of anime without stopping to take a screencap. There's something special about finding that perfect moment/frame and taking your screencap, much like preparing to take a photo with a camera. And the element of sharing them only adds to the fun. I've found my favorite shows through screencaps I've seen shared on Twitter. While watching this video, there were multiple screencaps you included that got me thinking, "where's that one from? I'd love to check it out". Didn't mean to make such a long comment haha, but fantastic job with the video!
You know, this is really weird to me. Because I never screencapped. Until just recently. I took a couple of when I watched Lucky Star, and I was talking to friends about it. But the real kicker, was when I started watching Monogatari. Currently I have 614 screenshots and I've only finished Nekomonogatari Shiro. And I only started... At the start of Nisemonogatari. I don't know what obsession came over me, but, here I am, and I can only imagine how many more I'd have if I had done that during Kizu as well. (im going novel order, btw) So, even though it's only been a few short months, and one show, I understand nearly everything about the appeal of this. And to be honest, I really wanna join this sever now. I really enjoyed the video. I think though, by the way, that I probably would've still gotten the appeal even if I had never started though. I'm quite understanding of these things, and it seems really neat, and you; You sell these and the appeal of the server and screencapping very well. I'd be surprised if someone *didn't* get it. But anyway, end of that little bit. I just wanted to share my story, and tell you that I enjoyed the video. I really liked the editing on it, and it was a very pleasant watch. I think stitching is honestly the thing that is most awe-inspiring and novel to me about all this. Cause I've done that, taken screenshots as it's scrolled, but I never stitched them together before, and they look amazing. And, even today I do wonder how and why people have so many anime pictures saved to share on twitter and all, but, it's pretty natural to think that it came from something similar to this in a lot of cases. I think that... Sharing images is probably a good epitomization of anime fans, their interests, and their interactions. This is such self referential, insular, niche, and communal hobby, often filled with people who are probably not (always) the best at expressing feelings. Yet we come together to express ourselves through the love of this visual medium, to share these images, and the ideas and emotions that come along with these images, and our journeys with these shows. It's very wholesome, like this video. And with that, that's probably the end of my comment. This was nice, peace.
Huh. I never really thought of "screencapping culture" as a thing, but now that you point it out it might be one of my favourite parts of the fandom as well. Not to mention what a good excuse this topic is for a REALLY nice-looking video. Absolutely the content I'm here for.
Really enjoyed seeing all the screencaps in this episode. It was fun seeing what I recognized and loved seeing Asuka Jr. as the video image. I do screencapping for blog purposes and didn’t realize just how many people screencap out there
Love the editing gimmick. Random one-off screenshots I've found on /a/ and elsewhere have gotten me to try out far more shows than I care to admit. An interesting screencap of a show I don't recognize can sometimes feel like a glimpse at a totally new and exciting idea. So much so that I'm often disappointed once I find out the actual context behind it. That sense of discovery and infinite potential might be my favourite thing about looking through screencaps. Also you're totally right about Doremi lol, some moments are just too great, too iconic not to screencap. I don't like to pause in the middle of shows, generally, but I still have a healthy collection of Doremi shots that have accumulated somehow over time.
What a cool video!!! I always do this, usually just to capture stuff I want to make into a desktop wallpaper, but I had no idea there was a whole screencapping hobby culture around it
Screencapping is awesome. I've never really done it with anime, but when I watched Mad Men a year ago, I did it quite often (especially in later seasons). I love it when camerawork or animation itself is creative, you can just take a photo, show it to others, and they'll probably get what you mean nonverbally. Anyways, cool video. Can't wait to see what you put out next, every upload is like a pleasant surprise
I didnt knew that people did this what the hell. Ive been doing this for ages, just for me. My folder has like 10k screenshots. Where can I share??? I need some of those discords links
I take caps from time to time, but usually in a utilitarian way, where the frame itself distills an idea or emotion succinctly enough for me to use it as an aide in discussion. (That is to say, i screenshot only to use it as reaction pics.)
Hello everyone, I haven't actually commented on a RUclips video in quite some time but I am the owner of the Discord server that was mentioned in this video. I thought it'd be a good idea if I got my thoughts out about #screencapspam as well. It was a bit surreal seeing this video to be honest because this is something myself and I'm sure plenty of you already do out of habit and it was given a bit of focus in this video. #screencapspam was something that was born out of necessity, naturally a lot of people on the server just really like spamming screencaps of the anime they were watching or have watched in the past. It almost seemed like a no-brainer to include it. The weird thing is that there is seemingly so much to say about the practice and how much it can potentially inspire people. I'm sure many of us have glanced at people watching anime and sharing their screencaps and wanting to watch the same thing they are. It's also a way to invite conversation, if someone has taken a particularly good shot, it piques your curiousity. You may want to talk about the technical aspects behind it, you may want to laugh at the dialogue or the screencap itself. Like the server has lots of channels that are just there to share things that we find and I know a lot of discord servers and other communities have something like that. I don't feel that my server is really unique for having something like that at all. It's a byproduct of behaviour that I see in all corners of media consumption. I think it's just human nature to go about sharing things and sharing that joy with other people. #screencapspam really was just a dedicated place for that sharing in terms of just watching anime. I don't really think that much about it and it really isn't that special. Really it's just natural and I feel plenty of people will feel the same way.
Is it weird for me to find it weird, while having a giant screenshot folder for the use of crunchyrolls /AMP/ thread (the longest thread in the forums)? It is just that my screenshots have been used or will be used as material, but it is kind of different if you just put stuff into a folder to rarely if ever look at it again. It seems a bit excessive as a waste of space (I'm a hypocrite, I know), because these screencaps take up quite a bit amount of space on one of my storage HDDs. I hope you people forgive this weird ass comment, it reminded me that I have to catch up on the mentioned thread, I haven't visited there in a while.
Man this is great! If this was made by any other anituber I would’ve expected it to make the top slot of your next digest video!! How do I get into this discord server? Sorry if that’s a dumb question, I’m not used to using discord much
Video players like VLC, Media Player Classic and mpv are typically the ones used on Windows. If they have Mac versions, definitely go for one of those.
Gotta say, not an anime fan really myself (the last anime I've enjoyed was Jojo part 4 and am yet to start part 5), but that one screencap @ 8:26 has me interested in finding out what it is

This has also inspired me to take more screencaps for myself.
