It's the only place in India that has a place in top cities in the world for Street Food. Not just the food but also related history, tales , the affordability , and the connection with people.
I think u should travel to Harish Chandra Modak in Shyambazar best for puri in the morning and afternoon and evening luchi they used to give this in a banana leafs and there sweet is very good and in Kalighat Tarun Niketan spice hotel they use to give lunch in banana leafs too and must try mutton there and both the hotels more than 100 years old !!
Grew up in South Kolkata and all of these places are popular but not hugely publicized. So great that you guys brought out the nooks nd corner small shops. Like the kachori store in gariahat market is open only for breakfast in the morning. And to all those comments worried about food hygiene and gloves, no major food safety outbreak happended in kolkata and even if they look shabby they are not dirty. If gloves are not changed often or used properly, then they are useless.
I’m so glad you get it! Of course there are the places on every list but it’s fun to try these. And I wouldn’t have eaten it if I didn’t feel comfortable with the hygiene- I know they are taking care! No sense in worrying too much.

1. There are hundreds of better places to have kolkata kachori and not luchi (With 10 times better hygine, 2-3 times extra price approximately), before visit next time, try to check some kolkata vlogs done by youtubers accross the world and not to rely on BBC solely. You'll get much better experience. 2. Kolkata offers same food, from lowest prices to standard to high prices. (Hygine comes accordingly). To maintain hygine a cost is added and for daily intake, it crosses the price barrier for locals as the earning is low or limited. 3. Eat chowmein not in chinatown but in any bengali/kolkata restaurant, where you get bengali-chinese spice blend chowmein. Pure Chinese food comes with less spice therefore less in taste. 4. Phuchka stalls you'll get in every 15-20 minutes walk, and most of them are tasty, all have their own different taste. All are good. Due to food type it's easier to use hand and wash hands frequently than to use gloves. and there are international articles , you can find it on web. You can just check the other things, the plate, the water, the entire shop and mostly the locals, who are buying, how many people etc. Have fun.
For the record I didn’t say it wasn’t hygienic or worse, just different than what we’re used to, as you describe. I’ll never not eat street food in India. You’d have to be crazy to pass it up!
@@StephandPete I am sorry if it means something wrong, I just tried to explain what I found missing in your experience. I just explain how it could be better. Thats all.
Honestly it is about the habits and not about the price, a shop may be in the southern part of India selling food within the same price range has way better hygiene. If we have little bit of acceptance we might be able to understand hygiene is not luxury which comes at a better price point but a practice, basic hygiene can be and needs to be maintained across all places.
Actually what makes Kolkata different than other cities is the variety it has equal good south indian, north indian, chinese, muglai and bengali food available booth in street style and in fine dining and in heritage style which is unparalleled

Definitely, these are the must-visit places in Kolkata no doubt.... but fear not to accept the fact that Arsalan and some other places that are covered in the video are not at all street food. Next time do visit the Gariahat street food with multi other street food kolkata is more famous for. Happy touring.
After Kolkata, there was a big Chinese settlement in Shillong as well. There are still a few restaurants being run by the descendants of the Chinese immigrants even till today though most of them have migrated to Canada & Australia
Loved the video. Lovely family and that comes across effortlessly. Gariahat is the nearest market for me, so all of the are familiar. I hope you tried our sweets. If there's one thing that's special it's got to be the sweets. Try Chattaranjan's rosogolla or Nokurer sondesh. Both are in north Kolkata though. My favourite Bengali restaurant is Jagatmata Bhojonalaya (a strikinly modest place) on 10 Kailash Bose street near simla, north Kolkata; for me probably the best Bengali food in the entire universe. 4 generations of my family have been their customers.
The best part of this city is that it accepts all from rags to riches. It is feeding them all sometimes with empathy sometimes with sympathy and offcourse sometimes with a cost .Choice is yours but everyone is surviving here whatever may be the case. Now a days too many new metros born in India but this city is like old stalwart waiting for its due respect and promotion. Thanks with ❤
Its amazing guys!!! how you can eat so many varieties of Indian street and restaurant foods in one day?? I personally can't eat all of those in a day as it's upset my stomach...Nice to see your love for Kolkata or Calcutta
Funny thing about Biryani in Kolkata is, everyone has their favourites. It's easily 4-5 types that always comes on top and we, among our friends are always divided in that 😁
If you want to try kachoris that taste bonkers, please visit this shop called ‘maharani’. They are renowned for their kachoris. Also, for kathi rolls, go to Kusum Rolls. You will love it I’m sure.
I have Sat on that same chair at Ah Yeung almost 5 times now over the last 2 years I've known the place. 😅 Nice food. A little bland to our bengali tastebuds, but suits guys like me who sometimes want food that has less spices and more Umami.
As a Bengali living out side Bengal i feel really bad as well as nostalgic about Kolkata and Bengal. Nostalgic: about the food, the smell, lovely people, Chai adda (gossiping while sipping a cup of tea in a small tea stall) and the festivals Bad: Local government is corrupt and illiterate. They don’t understand how to preserve the culture. Infrastructure is crippling. There is a huge huge potential for tourism in Bengal but they are not at all focused on development. They could have packaged the three most important things - History, culture and food along with good infrastructure and this could have been easily the most memorable moment for foreigners who want to immerse into Indian culture. Those roads in china town speaks volumes😢 I really feel we indians are so lucky to have so much of history and culture but we are also unlucky and ignorant and disinterested about the same. Countries where there is little history they have preserved it in such as way and made it a brand that people just throng to enjoy a piece of it. And we are just sitting like a frog.
Being a Kolkata boy, Naturals was go to for me few years ago. But once I tried cheesecake ice creams in Bangalore, it pushed Naturals to the second spot. 😄 Give it a try, if you visit Bangalore. I am still a Kolkata boy though...Don't hate me!! (for Kolkata people watching this video)🥲

It is feeding them all sometimes with empathy sometimes with sympathy and offcourse sometimes with a cost .Choice is yours but everyone is surviving here whatever may be the case. Now a days too many new metros born in India but this city is like old stalwart waiting for its due respect and promotion. Thanks with ❤
Cholar dal bengali style is usually a little sweet
Kolkata is famous for its Fish delicacies and mouth wateringly good sweets.
This man looks like AB de Villiers 😂
RIGHT 😂
😂😂😂
Tandoor Park is very famous for their Kathi rolls.
I stay 5 minutes away from there. Enjoy your foods & Kolkata.
Such fun for the little boy 🎉
Its amazing guys!!! how you can eat so many varieties of Indian street and restaurant foods in one day?? I personally can't eat all of those in a day as it's upset my stomach...Nice to see your love for Kolkata or Calcutta

Mutton Kathi roll is the yammiest snack you will ever eat in entire India especially in Kolkata.
If someone disturb you immediately call 100
Funny thing about Biryani in Kolkata is, everyone has their favourites. It's easily 4-5 types that always comes on top and we, among our friends are always divided in that 😁
When in Kolkata, try bengali sweets.
Welcome to city of joy..
Very nice.. love from Kolkata
My house is near Tandoor Park and we go to Kusum’s for our Kathi Roll fix 😄
If you want to try kachoris that taste bonkers, please visit this shop called ‘maharani’. They are renowned for their kachoris. Also, for kathi rolls, go to Kusum Rolls. You will love it I’m sure.
You still missed out on telebhaja, a variety of sweets, mughlai paratha, momos, ghoti gorom, fish fry, etc
Thanks for exploring Kolkata Steph and Pete........loved your vlogs........try to come salt lake sector 5 one day...................
I have Sat on that same chair at Ah Yeung almost 5 times now over the last 2 years I've known the place. 😅 Nice food. A little bland to our bengali tastebuds, but suits guys like me who sometimes want food that has less spices and more Umami.
It was a fun change of pace!
Dada Boudi Mutton biryani is the one you should try
Have you visited Darjeeling and Sikkim?
Ahh, you guys went to the jodhpur park outlet of tandoor park! Legit content!
As a Bengali living out side Bengal i feel really bad as well as nostalgic about Kolkata and Bengal.
Nostalgic: about the food, the smell, lovely people, Chai adda (gossiping while sipping a cup of tea in a small tea stall) and the festivals
Bad: Local government is corrupt and illiterate.
Those roads in china town speaks volumes😢
I really feel we indians are so lucky to have so much of history and culture but we are also unlucky and ignorant and disinterested about the same.
Excellent video. Down to earth and very informative. You have a new fan from Canada!
Thanks so much!! Glad you enjoyed.
@ Yes, and now I am binge watching as I was pissed as to what happened last Tuesday. Need positive thoughts and your videos articulate that. Thank you
Right there with you. Any room in Canada? 🙃
@ - Perhaps a conversation for another day when we heal. For now, please post beautiful content. My parents live in Kolkata so you two are in good hands. Honestly!
@@StephandPete - Can I ask how long you three are in Kolkata? Is this the end of your India vlog or can we all look forward to more?
