I'm so glad you touched on the diversity part. Most of the people making these videos are Asian or White, so they skip it as it doesn't affect them. As a black person myself in SF, I have found it super isolating, segregated and passive aggressively racist which is ironic cause it's supposed to be a "woke" city. I work in a FAANG company and make so much money but still so unhappy here. I'm moving to NY next month, so much diverse and much less isolating to black people. You see friend groups with all races instead of one or the other. Also NY is way cleaner than SF. Poop, pee and needles on the street for me is a no-no. I don't know how you do it but after 4 years of living here, I'm done.
Anyways you've got a new subscriber, looking forward to more insightful videos!

You're perspective on diversity in SF is very PC. I was a NYC transplant that lived in the Peninsula, North Beach and Polk Gulch. Hiked everywhere, partied, and had access to places you see in lifestyle magazines, etc. Lived there 6yrs but nvr felt as comfortable as my white, brown or Asian friends that have a larger pool of ppl to mingle with.
SF and the Bay Area is wonderful and the tech / NERD scene there is on steroids, lol. Still keep in contact with friends from all backgrounds I met there. I'll nvr tell a blk person not to move there. However, mentally prepare yourself if you do. I still have some form of PTSD from some of the racial instances I experienced at work and play there.

Thank you so much Florence! Your name is that of both of my grandmothers and would have been my baby’s middle name in 1995 if he had been a girl. He was born in Berkeley’s Alta bates but was raised for first 3 years in lower knob-upper tenderloin where our apartment and cafe were. The milkbean is what the cafe is now called. It was a very dirty palm-reader/psychic reading studio and then vacant for a couple years until we remodeled and got it licensed for food service.
We got divorced and I moved my baby back to Minnesota and his father went back to France and Algeria. But we got together for a family reunion in sf just 6 months ago.
It was so wonderful to be back. And the San Francisco Baby (my son) now wants to move there!!! And so do I!
Thank you so much for being candid about the self-segregating that goes on. When will it ever end????? Back in the 90’s the lower knob and upper tenderloin were very much a self segregated “foreigner” neighborhood. Immigrants of all skin tones and continents seems to live there. And they self segregated from each other.
Sf needs to solve the poop problem. That needs to be priority number 1 (no pun intended but noted as pee being #1 & poo #2). I hope you will stay there and prosper Florence. Maybe you could be on city council or run for mayor to help solve priority #1. Im not back yet but as soon as I can, I will be. And I would vote for you!

Have lived in SF for decades and basically agree with all of your points. However, having been lucky enough (or *old* enough...?) to have experienced it in the 80s and onward, the impacts of how much it has changed from an artsy, funky, diverse, affordable, place to the gentrified uber-expensive place that it is now is disheartening. I too live TL-adjacent and work in social services, not tech. That is a big challenge at times. I would advise anyone who is thinking of moving here to truly, carefully check out the rental prices before moving. And remember, that inexpensive room in a household that you see advertised might get scores of applicants. Rental prices now are no joke. Oh, and yes the Gay rights movement did pretty much start in the 60s/70s here, but as you know civil rights/social justice movements are ongoing and the LGBTQ+ movement is no exception!

Fleishhacher Pool, Ewing Stadium, Playland at the Beach, Ocean Beach Sky Tram,
Seals Stadium, Millionaire Row Mansions next to the ex Flood Mansion. In addition,
the history of quarries, and Chinatown hidden spots are equally fascinating.
Even SF Cemeteries are not morbid fascination, but incredible history not found in
many other places in the world. SF waterfront has changed roles many times
over decades to provide great insights into the greatness that SF represents.
The Architecture is another super interesting topic. How SF went from art as

I lived in the North Bay, Marin county Area on my own (outside the military) for almost three years. This was like from 1980 to 1983. I did one hitch in the coast guard. I didn't want to go back to Texas. So I stayed around. This was just before the Silicon Valley took over. If I lived there now I'd be homeless probably. I had a hard time handling the rent in Marin then. I thought about moving to San Francisco. The rent then was actually cheaper than where I was. It was even less expensive in Oakland. I was in SF all the time. I'd catch the golden gate bus across the bridge then jump on the Mccalister st. bus. McCallister st was in a black part of town. I am African American. I'd get a hair cut there. That area is probably paved over with gentrification now. I find it hard to believe that you criticize mass transportation in San Francisco. Compared to Houston, where I live now, mass transit in San Fran is fantastic. The city SF had a lot of homeless people then. I came back home to Texas and I would tell stories about the homeless in San Francisco. I guess now it has increased 3 or 4 times. Wow! That is hard to imagine. The tenderloin sounds like it hasn't changed. It was bad then. I missed the Bay Area a lot. The horror stories now make me glad I am in Texas. Now they are gentrifying the neighborhoods here. I guess that is progress. I don't know. I have not been back to California since 1984. I've forgotten what it looks like. All the Californians are moving here. Most of them come from Southern Cal. I've met a few blacks from Oakland and San Francisco. I keep hearing about poop in the streets of SF. Homelessness exists here, but it is not that bad, not in most parts of the city. Not yet anyway. I could say more. Maybe another time.

I live in San Francisco, Hayes Valley and have lived in Japantown and inner Sunset. Also lived East Bay and Peninsula. I'm a techie, please don't hate me ;-). I agree tech has driven prices up especially housing. I've lived and traveled abroad. Many expensive cities have solved the housing crisis with social housing. Other than being expensive I love San Francisco, never boring with great culture and diversity including of the food. San Francisco is NEVER boring. Great weather and mostly friendly people. Housing is the biggest issue but I think the good out weights the bad. Poop is an issue mostly because of the homeless crisis which is somewhat related to the housing crisis but more complicated than that. There are substance abuse issues, and mental health issues including veterans with PTSD. Need to address the underlying issues of substance abuse and mental health issues. Simply subsidizing housing is not enough. Agreed about the economy very strong especially if you have tech skills. Remote working will probably help, those just coming to San Francisco to work will just stay home leaving SF to the die hard locals maybe lowering cost of housing?

Please in your opinion and as a someone who has been living in bay area and as a black lady which one of this cities will be highly recommended for me , consider job opportunities, cost of living and safety .

I would say sf and Oakland are both risky with regard to crime, especially now, so I wouldn’t use that as a deciding factor. For either city I would stay away from the highest crime areas. As long as you pick a “safe” neighborhood you should be ok in either city. As for job opportunities, sf definitely has the most! The cost of living right now is pretty equal but normally sf is more expensive.

Oh gosh, I'm moving to SF this summer after many years in NYC and this freaks me out. The lack of diversity as well as encountering potentially segregated groups gives me pause. I'm very extroverted and friendly, and now I'm fearful I won't be able to find a good core group of people to hang out with. Yikes! Tell me it isn't that bad!

    • @florencewadley

If you are extroverted and friendly, then you’ll likely have a good experience! Socialize with coworkers, get out and do things that interest you and I think you’ll fare pretty well. It’s not the easiest scene, but with some effort, I think most people can create a comfortable situation for themselves. Good luck!

I loved this video - thank you for an informative video of the city now. I went to San Francisco in 98 - and I fell in looooove! I mean, OMG the views. But, i was shocked by the segregation. As a Brit, I had been expecting a mixing pot of peoples and it was not like that. It was so segregated - and in fact, we were warned not to go to x, y, z areas because they were "not white" and therefore "dangerous"! I was so shocked to be blatantly told that. We were shown areas and it was like "this is the Italian bit, this is the area the Russian's lived" and it was so weird to me. Overall though, I loved the ecletic vibe of the city, and how stunning the views were. I have heard since however the soul it had then is kind of not the same due to the insane amount of money the tech bro's brought to the city and the rapid gentrification. It's very beautiful though, and like you say, it was the history of the place and the fact that I grew up listening to songs about it, and TV shows with it in, that made it so iconic to vist. I had a choice between SF and NY and chose SF as my one dream holiday (it was expensive back then traveling from the UK so we only did it the one time). I love how you shared the pros and the cons in this video.

  • @colleenmonfross4283
    @colleenmonfross4283 Год назад +2

San Francisco has been a part of my life since the 1960's. I have watched the changes occur and the "gentrification" you mentioned has nothing whatsoever to do with race, specifically, the white race, it has to do with the Silicon Valley. If you are a techy, you have taken over the city and pushed everyone else out, regardless of color! I have not found it to be as dirty as you said, the Tenderloin is, for sure, but I have not experienced all of the filth you described in this video. It is ridiculously expensive, I will agree with that but that goes back to the takeover by the techys moving in and taking over, which is why I don't live there anymore. As for diversity, San Francisco is the most diverse place I have ever been and I have traveled the globe. The city, like most cities, is divided into neighborhoods but there is fluidity and people come and go between them without any problem. People are simply comfortable with groups they identify with so they tend to congregate together, that's very normal but you don't have overt racism there with strict segregation like you do in other cities. I love San Francisco and enjoy it every time I am there. It has a uniqueness to it I have not found anywhere else.

Yes, once the techies moved in from Amazon and Google, it was the end. Rents will never come down. People complain about the transportation because it was designed for a different time where money went further. People keep to themselves in this city and most of the old timers have left so new ones make the city now. So elect someone to spend the money to build the Muni system and pay the tax but will people in high incomes use it? They will have cars, most of them willing to pay tickets etc.
