This episode is a perfect example of show-don't-tell. There was plenty of new terminology and context that would have taken several minutes to explain. Instead they gave us bits and pieces to infer what it all means rather than waste our time with info dumps. I'm so hyped for the rest of the series.
This is good writing and world building. Like you said instead of force feeding us details they make the viewer do a bit of exploring and is rewarded for their efforts.
An example would be when a character mentions something about tariff rates. A passing mention, but gives us a small idea of the situation of this universe's logistics.
Like that opinion poll at 4:40, which showed that the Earthians want their government to focus on poverty reduction and fair trade, which meant that Earth struggles with poverty and is in someway economically disadvantaged. While the Spacians focus more on Defense/Security and Free Competition, which means they're probably dominant over the Earthians militarily and economically.
I really liked the introduction of GUND. This is clearly central to the plot, so they gave us a bit of background with its nanotech medical applications and that it was repurposed for military use. We're given a glimpse of the effects it has on the pilots, but it isn't a whole lot. We don't know the full extent of what it can truly do, and I'm looking forward to learning more about it. Edit: Just realized the writer is the same one who worked on Code Geass. This is gonna be good~
Agreed. play devil’s advocate, as of now, we don’t *know* what Prospera’s plan is and who it will hurt in the process, but I can definitely understand her going the distance to get some revenge after what she was put through here
The horror on Elnora's face when she realized her own daughter buddied up with a new weapon of mass destruction along with all its implications... that was a very impactful scene.
I honestly think the look of absolute horror on Elnora's face when she looks down at Lfrith's console and realizes what's happening is probably one of my favorite parts of this whole thing.
@@darrelldundee5045 Watching the enemy soldiers, who were there to kill them, freaking out over the fact that Eri and her dad were singing happy birthday is what really sells the ending for me. The enemy soldiers went there seeing Eri and her family as monsters for what they created (the Gundam) but that moment of innocence was a stark contrast to that notion. For the briefest of moments they saw Eri and her family as people. They were terrified of their own orders that that they dutifully carried out. That's why they wanted to cut communications. They couldn't handle the reality that Eri and her family were no different from them.

When Dr. Carbo had Eli log in, you know what's going to happen. Also, hell of a way to intro a series, Bandai. Wrench my heart apart, why don't you? Amazing, ladies and gents. Looking forward to the series.
Trust me. As a relative newcomer who saw the Earth-based arc of Wing on RUclips back in 2021, and then, after swapping to unofficial services, watched The Original Series, 0080, Thunderbolt S1, Char's Counterattack and is now on the last episode of the Unicorn OVA, planning to watch SEED and either G or Turn A after finishing Unicorn, even I saw what would happen coming. It's the curse of the Gundams: Those who are chosen by fate to enter a Gundam-type Mobile Suit are, with a few exceptions, doomed to lose _something_ in return. For Amuro, it was the sanity of his Father who soon became a delusional nutcase obsessed with the RX-78. For Suletta Mercury, it was her father full stop.
18:18 is simply chilling. The kid's innocence, the mother's horrified expression, the vocal OST. You knew that exact moment Eri's life changed forever and a traumatizing fate of every Gundam MC awaited her.

Actually going by Gundams very limited history with prologues, it should be seen as an indicator that the series is going to be very bad. The only other Gundam series that i know of wish has a prologue is build divers. Wish also had a very good prologue only for the series to turn out as one of the worst in the entire franchise.
The mothers face upon realizing that her daughter is the key to a massive weapon hit extra hard. Gosh what an amazing prologue. Gonna finish crying now
The horror of war is upended by the horror a parent knowing the grim future their children will face... Amazing prologue. You got an instant fan of the series.
This 25 minute prologue is absolutely one of the best things I’ve watched all year. This feels like Kill’Em All Tomino 2.0! Utterly riveting and horrific and massively heartbreaking. I am hooked.
yea count me out if it ends up becoming another IBO! for when it comes pet peeves in some gundam series, the kill em all tomino style becomes a massive turn off if you ask some people!
@@bertc9528 Kill’Em All Tomino is a phrase that up sums Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino’s most famous anime where practically all or most of your favorite characters are killed in the story. From Zambot 3 to Ideon to Zeta Gundam to Char’s Counterattack to Victory Gundam, main characters die horrible deaths showcasing the very idea that war of any kind is a losing proposition. Babies, children, dogs, old people, etc.. no one is safe from Kill ‘Em All Tomino.
@@bertc9528 if you ever watch the char's counterattack movie or season two of IBO (which was directed by one of tomino's disciples) you'll then understand the phrase "KILL EM ALL, TOMINO STYLE!"
The dad singing Happy Birthday was one of the most hauntingly beautiful things I've seen in a while. The tone going from lighthearted to serious is nothing new in stories but they really pulled off something special in this. Also, it's jawdropping to see the ceiling for how pretty Gundam shows can look in modern animation get raised even higher. Those laser funnel things reform into a shield was so freaking cool.
I'm surprised I had to scroll so far to find this... it's absolutely stunning! already on par with unicorn or iron blooded orphans. can't wait to see what the main series brings!
Same as me. That is reality of war. Some may say that as a simple way to make a storyline just letting someone killed. But, thats war, no matter who you are, when the time comes, you will die. No matter how eventful that time for you.
Never has a Gundam series first episode hit me this hard, I am VERY hyped to see where this series will go.....not sure my heart will be up for more tragedy though but it comes with the territory when it's Gundam I suppose.

Being a father of a little girl who is just a year older than this girl, my heart aches by the haunting Happy Birthday song and the sadness in his voice knowing this will be the last time he gets to sing it to her…
All the while his mind being eroded by the gund system...even though he was starting to become a vegetable, he still squeezed out his last happy birthday song for his daughter...😭
That ending had me in tears. As a single parent of a beautiful, funny, and curious daughter...i couldn't imagine her being surrounded by the horrors of future war. This prologue cut my heart life a knife. This is how Gundam is done.
Amazing way to get viewer attached to the characters, and getting them invested the singing in the last part is simply chilling, and forcing everyone around to hear it's transmissions, the child innocents, her mother's reactions I'm simply hooked
really tells that the innocence of a child can be a wondrous and fascinating thing but dangerous at the same time. A quote from Volibear from League of Legends: "The heart of a child is untamed. Violent in its hope. Cruel in its despair."
I saw it slightly differently. Eri’s mom struggled to activate the Gundam so others wouldn’t have to. Yet, despite all that effort, her young daughter is the one who is arguably cursed to pilot it instead.
Military weapons are designed so pretty much even a child can use them and they do. The ease of usability means its easy to train even the stupid on how to use them.
A true Gundam series always shows us the true horrors of war, revenge, etc. It always tells us no one is safe from the reality of these horrors even the main characters. Always been a fan since I first saw 0080, 08th Ms Team, and Chars Counter Attack back in the 90s. To this day Zeta is my favorite. This prologue was masterfully done and they didn't waste a single second of that 20-25 minutes. Gundam Unicorn Spoiler Ahead I really got a Gundam Unicorn feel from this. Banger's Dad gave him the Unicorn while they was under attack and I really felt that vibe when the older lady hooked the little girl up to the gundam and told her to talk to it and when the little girls mom realized her daughter was the only the gundam was connected to.
18:20 The scary thing it's not that a 4 year old child just linked to a Gundam. She did not just iniciated a callback from Layer 33, but she just also iniciated Layer 34, which I suppose it's a Layer where the pilot it's more letal. A 4 year old kid exceeded what a Newtype from previous shows was capable to do on the battlefield by just linking with a Gundam-Type.
Wow. That was depressing ending.. Rest in peace, Nadim.. :'( The Prologue was great and it hit me really hard.. I've already took a liking to the characters and the mobile suit designs look really cool! I'm so hype and I can't wait to see more of this series. And also Happy Birthday, Eri!
Holy crap, she's 4 in this! Kind of expected how things were going to play out in general. But seeing the girl operating the suit with such innocence and as the mother looks on in horror added a whole new layer. Can't wait for the series. I know she'll be older, but just the fact that we see how young she was when it all started.
I don’t think she was piloting it. I just think her body got it running. It’s the mum doing the piloting. Hence when she flys off you see the mums hand on the joystick. That’s what I think anyway. Kid was just exposed to the horrors of war and only part she played was she was needed to get the suit to work.
@@wannabkain4400 the mum was piloting, however eri herself was the one killing the soldiers. She was directly controlling the funnels and even part of Gundam as when she says one two three, the Gundam lifts it's arm in response and launches the funnels

This story of the prologue is tragic but beautifully executed. Truly an emotional masterpiece and amazing set up for the series! Looking forward to watching the Witch from Mercury series.
The tone of this Prologue and the tone of the high school drama which is the rest of the show so far tells me one thing. They're going to switch tones suddenly towards the end of the season and kill most characters we care about in a horrific fashion....which is an MSG tradition. I LOVE IT!
The sound effects and the color light just blow up my mind Even the music And the storyline is really good And the beginning Anakin skywalker too Now THE GOD DAMN WALLET NEED MONEY!
My guess is that the reason Erith was able to reach level 33 was either because she is a child or more likely because the others were just testing Lfrith from a tactical standpoint. because similar to current algorithms and neural networks she fed it an abundance of personal information to the point that it could understand her better and work along with her quirks. Thus it’s responsiveness to her was high because it had attuned itself to her on an intimate level allowing it to accommodate for discrepancies just by knowing who she is. I say this because there is current day reason to believe this is possible because of several AI studies, some of which have pointed to the idea that in the future data will become the new currency because AI will become so data driven it may even be used to give people extra appendages based on how well it understands them. Thus Eri treating the AI like a friend led to the best case scenario where the AI has no issues syncing.
A composite organism? That being said, albeit with somewhat underwhelming execution, I believe you might be interested with the concept behind anime Beatless
This is what I wanted to say, but i lacked the vocabularies for them. You can tell the writers definitely did their homework and have managed to weave the concepts elegantly into the Gundam universe. In fact, they've managed to "update" the sci-fi elements in Gundam to keep up with the real world's on so many sides, it's beautiful

There are also different sounds used when the beams hit the beam rifle as well as the actual mobile suit. There is a lot of weight being shown as well such as the MS being dragged back as the beam passes through it. Really conveyed an image that these suits were very agile but also very heavy

"Im prepared to take full responsibility". Delling essentially did this behind the council's backs and Sarius' face at 16:27 is pretty telling... Now at 16:43: Theres a picture of what looks to be a younger Cardo with Asticassia students, meaning Gund was a product of her time at the very school Eri/Suletta is going to. Now for stuff that takes into account the main show. Gundams are pretty much taboo tech with their tech being seen as a curse by Cathedral, despite that theres a Gundam pilot aside from Suletta who pilots the Pharact. His name is Elan "Ceres", Ceres is the name of a celestial object in the asteroid belt, just like Suletta's last name. Hmmmmm... I wonder if Elan has a similar history to our mc and its part of the reason why he's interested in her. Interesting set up this prologue was and a doozy of a wall of text Ive made lmao.
Kinda wild to think that all this time, it was the villain origin story of not only the main antagonist, but also, of the gundam that the protagonist will have to fight eventually
Imagine being a mother holding her child, and you hear your husband singing 'Happy Birthday to You' to your 4 year old daughter, and she joyfully sings back. But the knowledge that these are his final words are stabbing through your every being, as you hold back your tears as to not distress the fruit of your love, as she is celebrating her birthday. It kinda seems like a mix of unicorn and Zabanya’s shields. With it separating out into bits, and having an i feild for beam deflection. Come to think about it the X-dividers also give additional thrust when equipped on the back, and this shield does too, so they literally took the three best shields and combined them, next where going to find out it’s made of gundarium alloy and coated in both variable phase shift and nanolaminate
@@ARMsMaster that was a joke, the sheild is already busted I was just making a point, also gundarium alloy and veritable phase shift are also two redundancies of each other, being that gundarium is nearly unbreakable, and veritable phase shift magnetically repeals metal pot physical attacks
@@cashewmiranda5155 Well, if a beam shot is powerful enough to break through an I-field, then the nanolaminate coating won't be able to do anything either.

What I like the most is that they have new beam weapon effects and sound. The characteristics of a beam weapon projectile this time is totally fresh and looking more convincing with that milisecond delay of "charge and release" animation of the laser travelling from the barrel, to when it hits the targets as if it slices through just a bit and doesn't just dispersed immediately upon impact at some shots. Highly curious of this new terminology surrounding the GUND system and it's Permet levels that is somewhat indicating neural load levels the pilot will have to withstand in return for giving the mobile suit higher performance output. Liking that one scene where they show a human with whole cybernetic parts and it's correlation to the GUND technology.
I saw it as a combination of both the psycho zaku from Thunderbolt and the Alaya-Vijnana System in Blood Iron Orphans. Using Neural tech to move to increase reaction time and speed. This series is going to be insane I cannot wait.
I would say that they also included the psicommu/funnel system into the GUND tech. All in all it looks to be a wombo combo of the Alaya-Vijnana system,psicommu/funnel and reuse p (psycho zaku) technology. This series is gonna be amazing to watch!!
The new sounds definitely gave me that same feeling I had when watching Gundam 00 for the first time, when we suddenly hear brand new beam and mech effect sounds that just made the series feel so fresh.
From mecha design to sound effects, music, animation, direction, and all the punch of the story, this series will prove to be one of the greatest in the entire Mobile Suit Gundam history.

The prologue hits harder once you finished the whole seasons... now I can't blame Prospera for everything she has done, it's not entirely her fault after all
This prologue definitely makes me want to watch this new Gundam universe, and I hope it's a series that has its own unique quirks because the technology in this particular world is quite high tech and combines some form of bio-technology. We get the youngest pilot in Gundam history (4 years old!) and we also get quite a bit of both political conflict as well as mobile suit action which was both awesome and amazing at the same time! I also LOVE the soundtrack that plays when the Gundam FINALLY deploys for battle, it's haunting yet had a sort of heroic theme to it in some way. Also, in Gundam series the hero (or heroine) gets exposed to the horrors of war and goes through a rite of passage to discover that while the world out there is one that will eat you up and spit you out in the long run, there are things worth fighting for because that's what kept people HOPING for a better tomorrow. I simply can't wait to see where this new Gundam series takes us, and I hope to be pleasantly surprised.
The phrase "Hammer of Witches" is a reference to the Malleus Maleficarum, a late-1400s Catholic text on witchcraft that was a major influence on the persecution of witches. (I'm pretty sure).
I agree. It's always like that with any show with a story, where they have you wait for the next episode to see what happens next. The worst is when they end an episode on a cliffhanger moment where something big is happening and then suddenly, show's over. I know it's to keep everyone in suspense and interested, but it's still irritates me to this day. I don't want the show to stop there, I wanna see the whole scenario play out right then and there. It's a minor nitpick and that is common. 😮💨 That said, I too can't wait to see what this new series has in store for us. 👍
After the last episode my theory is that Suletta and Eri are one and the same. Eri's mind and conscience is within Aerial while the body pretty much reset which became Suletta. Would explain her more naive mindset. We don't know the aftermath of the battle. Could have Eri handle the Permet data storm?? A side effect of the experiment Lfrit Gundam?? It could explain the plan behind Quiet Zero, a way to bring back Eri. It was a bombshell with that episode and confirmed a lot of threads but also left us with many questions more. I am floored with how much of the anime comes back to the Prolouge. It becoming more and more important as the anime continues. Whatever happens I am invested and experiencing it till the end.

The horror on Elnora's face when she realized her own daughter buddied up with a new weapon of mass destruction along with all its implications... that was a very impactful scene.

Watching the enemy soldiers, who were there to kill them, freaking out over the fact that Eri and her dad were singing happy birthday is what really sells the ending for me.

Thus Eri treating the AI like a friend led to the best case scenario where the AI has no issues syncing.

the only problem is she used our pure tanuki but even so she cared for her as well deep inside, she really is a tragic villain
She definitely has a legitimate grievance, but Thorfinn from Vinland Saga would say "I have no enemies"...

I love the Gundam series so much. Its anti-war, anti-military message is powerful and its stories that greed and focus on profits will always be our downfall and that we need to unite as one and be done with silly things like borders is more relevant today than ever.
Or ethnic hate or feelings of group superiority not everyone in Gundam driven by profit, profit just one of the way humans gear for war. Tribalism instinct major cause. But Profit is one of the big causes. And others its Ego.

Theres quite a bit of details and stuff I'd like to talk about;
At 3:41: Theres 3 MP Gundams but 2 were only accounted for in Folkvangr
At 5:51: The Council didnt exactly plan for the massacre of Folkvangr with Sarius mentioning whether or not Cardo will comply or not and at 10:53; "Don't we need the council's approval?" "Im prepared to take full responsibility".

Phenomenal prologue.
The Rubris/Lfrith's Shield is the best we've seen since the Unicorn, Zabanya, and the X-Divider.
@@cashewmiranda5155 Why does it need the nanolaminate coating? It seems to already have what is probably its universe equivalent of an I-Field.
@@ARMsMaster again not the point, but I’ll argue on this one, beam weaponry lose power as they go, in unicorn that fuck all sized beam had to go through unicorn’s sheilds, unicorn, and banshee’s psychofield to hit the colony. Psychofields deflecting and block beam weaponry just the same as an I field, and seeing as the beam got smaller and weaker with each psychofield it passed through then a beam passing though an I field might not have enough power to melt away nanolaminate
If everything goes wrong and the show ends up bad somehow...at least we will still have this masterpiece

Probably the most perfect lead-in to a narrative I've seen in a while. We're introduced to the major players, characters, and the stakes in such a tight, effective format. And the tug at the heartstrings was just chef's-kiss. It all wouldn't have worked without the score, either. Gorgeous to look at, too. If this were shot-for-shot word-for-word done in live action? It'd hook even a wider audience.
I dont know about live action, it will be held back by the child actor

Loved the prologue and looking forward to the main series even more now! I was already invested in seeing how Gundam would do with its first female protagonist and seeing how Eri starts off really makes me wonder where she's gonna go from here. She was so young and tossed right into war without any choice, having to kill in complete innocence which may hit her far heavier as time goes on, especially given how her father died to give her and her mother time to escape.
I think the "Happy Birthday to you" scene at the end of PROLOGUE is a call-back to a scene where Marie's pirates are being decimated in Gundam École Du Ciel, a Gundam manga that also has a female protagonist.

Gundam Utena is something i never expected to see in my life and I absolutely LOVE IT.
@@Jnunez00 Yeah something like that! Looking forward to this too
I would say that they also included the psicommu/funnel system into the GUND tech.
It's i-Field, 00 sword/shield system and Alaya-Vijnana
From mecha design to sound effects, music, animation, direction, and all the punch of the story, this series will prove to be one of the greatest in the entire Mobile Suit Gundam history.

This was quite the introduction to Witch From Mercury. I all ready like the MS designs, but seeing them in action made me love them even more. October can’t get here soon enough.
The tech side was great. But isn't this the same with IBO in terms of that eating away at your life part?
@@upsidedownmachiatto2670 While there are some similarities, the system in IBO is only risky if you deactivate the limiters. While the MS in Witch of Mercury, there’s all ready a risk just by activating the suit. Also, the risks seems to increase the more functions and performance you want to unlock, like the bit weapons. Plus, while Mika does loose more use of his body every time he deactivates the limiter he’s isn’t a complete vegetative state. He even regains use of his body whenever he’s hooked up to Barbatos. While he see pilots in the prologue, become bedridden if they increase the score on the their mobile suit.
@@Gundamninja7 I see. I'm actually onboard with this new direction. That humans aren't fit to go and live in space for extended periods and would need whatever it is they are trying to accomplish. Just didn't like the terms used I guess. Was it Spacians? I still prefer Spacenpoids but that's just my U.C. hang-up.
Even if the full show doesn't live up to the hype, this prologue truly shined, and I pray for my now sky high expectations to be shattered.
The phrase "Hammer of Witches" is a reference to the Malleus Maleficarum, a late-1400s Catholic text on witchcraft that was a major influence on the persecution of witches. (I'm pretty sure).
The worst thing about this Prologue is that I have to wait to see the rest of it in the main series. Well Done and I can't wait to see more! 😃
