Awesome topic you chose imo! I agree that the definition of choreography in the context of animation is murky, but I personally wouldn't categorize directly explosions and other kinds effects animation as choreography. I think choreography always have to involve the physical bodies of characters and how they are made to move relative to their environment. Of course effects and physical movements are often intertwined, but I wouldn't call both choreography. That's just my inclination, though.

Sorry mate, they’re right. What you referred to as choreography is both too broad and too narrow at the same time. Choreography normally only refers to the planned movements for actors in a production. Normally it’s specifically live productions at that, like blocking in a play, or dancing in a musical or concert. It also doesn’t refer to fight scenes specifically, which is why the term “fight choreography” is separate from other forms of choreo
Animation obviously had choreography, not in the general sense as you don’t have actors or recording devices and it cannot be a live performance by its nature, but you still plan out and block a scene of movements and, as you said, the perspective of the animation mimics cameras, but of the 4 points you laid out,
The context does matter to explain why the choreo is blocked the way it is, but “all colors no choreo” is a real critique. Granted, I’m not sure why anyone would say that as if it’s a critique entirely in it of itself, as relying on color and spectacle instead movement and spectacle is perfectly fine in a vacuum, it’s not like marvel movies where they fill a void of dynamism with special effects. It’s animation, it’s all special effects.
The critique is valid when the fight scene feels to be substituting choreo with shonen anime named special attacks and bright lights out of laziness. The key thing lost is not the choreo in it of itself, but what it offers: dynamic action.
That Fates fight scene has simplistic choreo, that’s on purpose. The colorful magic does not add to the choreo, those are just separate things, although the use of magic or Ki blasts or whatever it may be is part of the action, for choreo, it’s usually making your character take a break to stand still as a bright laser happens and then the other guy also does a laser or gets sent to the dust dimension where everyone thinks they’re dead for 30 or so seconds.
Also, why are you talking about “flow” and “energy”, just say dynamic pacing, man. You’re talking about pacing.

I love how you brought up Hakuyu Go's vision for the Sukuna vs Mahoraga fight. It's just as he describes. Chaotic, otherworldly, something you can't understand rather than feel. I believe choreography is a way to communicate a story through action.

Exactly, I absolutely hate how people just dismiss the whole show because of Rudeus being a pervert, While he is trying to improve as a person. The world building and other aspects of MT is absolutely amazing and I hate how people don't pay attention to that.

most people refer to FIGHT choreography. And it is actually choreographed by real people up front fairly often, so the animators have plenty reference material. So the context in which it is used, applied to animation, is just fine

Personally i prefer pure close quarters, i just find that you can usually do more using a whole character rather than projectiles. Thats just my taste though, i dont mind a little mixture but sometimes it can get quite boring when its mainly just projectiles in fights.

What are your thoughts on demon slayer infinity castle getting a movie trilogy similar to fate heaven's feel.
I don't think it's fully confirmed yet, but anyway. I am extremely annoyed, I think TV shows getting film sequels is stupid. You have to wait for months to watch it, and when you finally do, you can't pause or rewind to appreciate the visuals if you go to the theaters...its a mess.

RE the Mahoraga vs Sukuna comment: While it's certainly true that the presentation has to live up to the context of the fight and the combatants, disregarding viewer comprehension because "it's supposed to go beyond conventional action" sounds like a pretty questionable directorial choice to me (I'm not saying the Mahoraga episode specifically suffered from this - just in general). Making the supernatural intuitively comprehensible to the audience I feel is a big part of action direction. Making something complex and unreadable for the sake of it is quite simple, the masterclass is transforming it into something simple, whilst not losing the bang.
He knows what he's referring to, you're just taking his opinion in the most direct way possible, He didn't choose to place scenes that are difficult to follow or understand because is something simple, he could simply have placed two lights clashing in the sky and call that a fight, but instead, he choose to play with every element of the environment, the supernatural powers of the fighters and their abilities and show everything at a speed and scale greater than what we are used to.
but if you repeat those scenes in slow motion or look for an analysis like that one from Mankoman, you will realize that the scenes are actually understandable and with a large amount of details that are overlooked, and that shows the enormous effort that had to be put into the episode so that it still feels chaotic and incomprehensible.

My point is that having to replay something in slow motion is not a viewing experience that ought to be designed for. What matters is what the audience actually sees on screen, which won't be an artificial version to ease comprehension. There's a reason "readability" is a term at all, because there's a spectrum to differentiate good chaos from confusing chaos.
@@snow8311 But i am talking about that episode because he is the director and is his opinion and vision about that episode, you are simply extrapolating their opinion to a general aspect, even though that was never his intention from the beginning.
On the other hand, I am not telling you that you should watch the episode in slow motion, but rather than is a way to appreciate the fact that the scenes actually make sense and that they are not incomprehensible as they seem at first glance.
A valid option is to watch the episode several times(The first time I saw the episode twice in a row, and then the next day and so on for several days.), just like in other series or movies you need to watch it several times to have a better idea of what is is going on, The same applies in this case and that does not mean that is wrong, is just another form to tell/show something.
