I don't know why, but this song always makes me feel a little bad for pontiff. Even though he was fairly bad. But you take the lore and stuff. The abyss corrupting the Undead legion. Seigwards promise to Yorm. No matter what you do, what good you do, there will never be a good ending in dark souls. No matter how hard you try. And I feel like that is very representative of the name, Dark Souls. Because no matter how many fires you light, they will fade, and the darkness will return.
The game basically represents the end of all hope and humanity's decadence, as you walk through glorious and massive monuments of a golden age while fighting what remains of our kind. It allows you to imagine what life was before, and realize that it will never happen again.

Humanity is cursed because of Gwyn and his fear of the dark. All the tragedy, pain, loss, all because of the fear. Humanity actually has no reason not to embrace the Dark, because they themselves are creatures of it. That's why I love Dark Souls. It teaches you to push on, to keep going. That's what you learn in the third installment. Ariandel is rotten, putrid. No one thrives there except Friede and Father Ariandel. Everything is terrible, and the corvians often request you light the fire to burn away all the rot. This is the exact opposite of the main world in Dark Souls. The fire has been prolonged for so many millenia that it's more like a curse than anything. Any attempt to build something meaningful is hopeless because of Gwyn who cursed all of humanity. It wasn't the dark that made humanity suffer, it was the Gods that tried to prolong their own golden age. So, don't be afraid of the dark, my dear Ashen One. And let the feast begin.
