Been driving the 2023 twin motor model for over 6 months. It's once of the best cars I've ever driven. I really can't fault anything. I went into it consciously knowing about the range, but I hasn't bothered me even on long drives and australia's very average public charging infrastructure. In regular driving I've got 370-380 on 90% charge and around 350-360 on 100% on highway. It looks great and drives like a dream.
Im working in Gothenburg as an engineer and i will bring some of your frustrations/ideas to our teams. I did not know that the action button/tripometer ends the call!,
If you are working as an engineer there maybe you have some insider information. Did the reliability of electrical vehicles in Volvo improved compared to recent and semi recent internal combustion vehicles?
Probably one of the best reviews of the XC40 out there, i've watched a few and you're really good at explaining everything in detail and also adding your own personal touch.
I really appreciate your low key information filled video. I really respect your insights and opinions. I test drove the Volvo and was very impressed. Volvo has always had a reputation for quality and feels very solid. I like that they kept CarPlay and Android and Google. As you pointed out the Play Store has many apps including Apple and Amazon music. These these features that make the owner feel at home and cannot be underestimated when making a big investment. I’m going to keep test driving and comparing as the 2024 new year rolls out. I have a Chevy Bolt and love it but we would like something a little bigger. Volvo is in the running. Many thanks for doing a great job!
Thank you and thank you for sharing that with me! 🙂 Right on point with the Android system, so important to be part of an evolution and not a static implementation.
Nice review! Subscribed. How does (gravel/potholes/uneven pavement) noise compare to the Model Y? My Model Y rumbles pretty loudly over rough surfaces, especially road joints and steel plates. I am hoping that the XC40 recharge dampens some of that rumble.
I experience the suspension in the XC40 more comfortable and silent compared to the model y. Did a video about that: ruclips.net/video/IvF9fMYylDo/видео.htmlsi=nzZpSthiQjkCR88x Thanks for subscribing 👍 Just saw your other comment.
Good review thx! I've checked one in showroom and found that the space for right leg in the driver' seat is surprisingly strait. Otherwise would consider as a next car..
The space for the right leg on this car is, though, much better than on the Polestar 2, where your knee is constantly hitting the hard plastic. Also in other terms the driver's ergonomy felt better on the XC40.
Love my used 2023 C40 Recharge Twin at 50% off new! Not the best EV, but an excellent car and perfect for my needs. Haven't had so much fun since my 68 Mustang 289. Good review. Given all the cameras, I was surprised that it doesn't have a dash cam: I installed a FitCamX that looks original. Wish there was a digital review mirror since rear visibility is lacking in the "sportback."
Getting mine April this year. Only thing i really find bad is the Apple carplay is by wire. I didnt really know this when i ordered it since who would release a car with wired carplay in 2024, so I didnt investigate. :(
Good thing is that it uses Android Automotive, but if you aren't into android and google maps that won't help you that much. Buy yes wireless is to prefer.
Wish EVs would put the charge ports on the front. Chargers are not setup like petrol pumps where you drive alongside them (yet), so front ports make much more sense. Also, EVs should have a frunk for the cables. Longer term... roll on inductive charging.
It's also worth mentioning that over 60% of collisions are head on and this could severely impact access and operation of the charge port. Granted this is only a statistic but certainly worth considering. I much prefer at the side personally speaking.
On-road inductive charging is a cool concept but it is never going to be available in any meaningful capacity. Building it would require a significant investment per kilometer, and you need it for really long lengths to make any difference. They don't even have enough money to keep the asphalt in a good shape.
inductive charging makes sense in car parking spaces to avoid the need for cable connections. There are a few interesting test sites around already. For example: ruclips.net/video/AE1gaNO9nj0/видео.htmlsi=Eze9jpxI_kXjk8Z2 @@iLoveTheseRemoras
Good review but the reviewer seemed to miss the fact that you can change between the map and Spotify using the infotainment button at the bottom of the screen.
I have the Singel motor version for over a year now. and i'm very pleased the way the car is driving. I really had my doubts for the single engine (frontwheel drive) but that's no issue. The real "issue" with the car is the range on the highway. no way I can make 300 km's on a charge. (with 110 km/h) overall, I like the car, the seats, the infotaiment system, all the options. I miss my BMW X2 2.0 Diesel however. :-)
@@ItsOnlyElectric thanks for answering. I like how big Song is but it’s hybrid. At the same time I like the electric twin Xc40 but it’s compact. This doubt is killing me
I'm owner of a XC40 from 1 year (version single motor front drive FWD) it has very low efficiency 25 kWh/100 km @130 km/h. It means that in the highway you have a range of max 250 km (155 mls) with a battery of 67 kWh. With this new version (79 kWh) anyway the range is of 320 km no more! Please take care of it in your choice.
I drive 90% on the highway with speeds ranging from 90-130 km/h. I get 370 km of range from my XC40 MY24 LR RWD (and new engine) at 12 degrees C. It is NOT the most effecient car, no, but most don't need more range, and it looks waaaay better than the sucked candies out there.
The long term economy figure on my 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge Twin is 20.3 kwh/100 km. You must have a very accelerator heavy foot. I got 17.5 kWh per 100km on a 300km very hilly stretch in a heavily loaded car. It seems to prefer the warm weather here.
AA has got split screen for a while now. The problem is 1) this is not AA, it's an Android based car system, and 2) Google/Volvo insist this system is "kinda" native AA (which is not), thus doesn't release a system update including support for the real AA (like they did with Carplay). Just the kind of attitude that p... the owners off
Did you test the range? My Volvo extended range never got range for 500kms, maybe if I drive at 70kms/h all the time I would get once close to 500kms range, I’m very far from that number driving for one month now.
NIce review. i'm liking nearly everything about this (why is it no one has made my *absolute* perfect car yet?). Some good little extra but needed practicalities. Rear screen wiper (and wash I assume) missed on so many new cars (presumably in the interests of looks) plus heated screen wash nozzles, Ive had the nozzles on my Kia freeze because EV and no waste engine heat. Also rear view looks great. I drove a MY, very nice but letterbox rv gets some getting used to. How is the front headrest? Is it adjustable? Pity about the rear footwell hump, so only really a 4 seater. I agree with you about auto regen thats on my Kia but its so random you never know what to expect after trying it a couple times i never went near it again. I run my current car on the lowest level of regen i guess i could get used to a higher level theres not much difference on a tesla from what i recall? From reading comments here though seems like i should also check out the Smart 3?
Thank you! Front headrests only adjustable in height, but still good positioned. Think its a decent amount of added regen to the Tesla compared running the EV6 on low.
The Tesla is a ver consistent regen experience. They've blended the mechanic brakes and regen really well. There used to be an issue at high states of charge where the car couldn't regen much but Tesla remapped the mechanical braking in software so it now works as if you had full regen.
Thank you for the review. One pedal driving in auto is annoying, you never know what to expect. I prefer "On" but it take some time to get use with the strong breaking when you take the foot from the acceleration ... not be driven with heavy boots :) You have some kind of "eco" mode if you activate the range assist
@ItsOnlyElectric I was wondering because there are a lot of people saying that the new Volvo's 2024 is not reliable, but the videos were about the XC60, so I was wondering.
Nice review. Subscribed to your channel. I just ordered one from this car. I was waiting for a while for it. I am from Turkey. Just I had concerns about bad weather conditions. Does RWD is good for bad weather conditions? I guess I should less worry about the fact electric cars are heavier than normal cars. But I want to have your opinion as well.
On Turkish soil it wouldn't be a problem with RWD. Keep your tires in good shape and avoid steep hills during snow and you will be fine. I manage to drive the VW ID3 RWD in Swedish winters.
I've the new xc40 recharge long range single motor with a range estimate of 570 km .when I picked it up the range estimator on the odometer said 350 km .I'm not even achieving that only a little above 300km the efficiency is showing 25km and getting worse as climate is cooling ,I've only been doing city driving in one pedal mode .am I driving inefficiently or have I been lied to .at the moment I'm really regretfull to have spent €59.000 on the core trim that has no fancy features even the boot floor doesn't have the divider .
It is surprising that so many Auto reviewers spent so much of their review time, commenting on performance and fun driving experience when they are not reviewing a performance vehicle. The odd person who wants higher performance, driving dynamics, would not even consider this type of vehicle. That’s why sometimes it’s more helpful to review ladies who review these kind of cars from a Daily commute point of you.
The version of this car from just under a year ago had a egregious design oversight of not having a dome light (or any other light for that matter) for the back seat unless you had the roof window spec on the car. Has that now been fixed? If not, I really hope no one buys it by mistake here in the dark Nordic winter. Also, the preceding version did not display the charging power for some incomprehensible reason, can the user see it now? A comment about the sound system would also be of interest, as both the basic and the "Harman/Kardon" spec in the preceding generation sounded bad.
Don't remember if there were lights at the back seat. The charging info on the screen is fantastic though, even shows too much. Voltage, Watts, amps, remaining time etc.
@@ItsOnlyElectric The one on your video has back seat dome lights (they show on the video) but I'm interested if they are now also there if you don't get the roof window. Good if they have improved the charging information!
Thanks for the always nice review. Always been a fan of Swedish cars and the way how they „think“ and build cars with the focus on sustainability. Regarding drive modes: I think this is an overrated feature anyway for most cars, unless you’re driving a very sporty car and take it to tracks often or if you are very tech-savvy. My wife drives a similar sized SUV from Audi (still ICE, though) with five drive modes and she couldn‘t care less, as she always says. 😂
Agree regarding the drive modes in general. The car should handle that automatically depending on how you drive. Eco mode is one thing that I think is needed in general though, where you by your own will turn off/limit certain functions to extend range.
great review. I'm waiting for my new company car to arrive. I have gone for the Dual motor core spec and really looking forward to my first foray into the electric vehicle market. Will feel like a big change from my 2019 Ford Focus diesel.
I have ordered Single motor MY24 since June in Australia 🦘 Still in a waiting list 😔 the difference in the decor such as ambient light and gear knob and Harman Kardon, ain't included!! All of these sold on AWD twin motor which is my unable to reach 😵💫😭 but still excited to see and own it.
Funny to see you calling the mobile phone stand an ashtray. If opened, the only thing that fits in is my cell phone.... And smoke from that interior part would be the battery of the phone starting to burn, I guess.
Ahh...that's how I learned about lagom but when I look it up now it seems to not be the case. 🙂 Of course it comes with the interior but for certain trim levels only. 😉 Tack! 🙂
Been a Volvo driver for thirty plus years, so I would say that the rear lights have been copied by Nissan Juke. I still today, at a distance, think the Juke lights are very similar to the iconic Volvo rear lights. There are more here in the UK, but the Juke really looks similar, and especially at night. 🤘😎👌m-E-m
@@ItsOnlyElectricEX-30 will be cheaper. I thought after upgrade all Volvos will get infotainment like in EX-30 or EX-90. For me XC-40 with new infotainment will be ideal car.
That's a big improvement by going with RWD bias. However, the XC40 needs so much more than that to be able to compete. The infotainment system is sad. Not enough hard buttons. The regen is pretty much a joke. I can't believe you have to find it in layers on the center screen to change rather than paddle shifters. And having strictly a touchscreen is very distracting while driving. Give me a control knob or buttons on the steering wheel. I had not noticed HUD, power side mirrors, easy entry/exit seats or power steering wheel on the 2023 that I tested last year. Sorry Volvo. Not yet.
I think you must be confusing it with another vehicle. My Volvo XC40 Recharge Twin has one of the strongest regens for an EV. It also has more controls than most. I agree that the switch between OPD on and off should be on a button.
@austmel8862 the car in the video is a single motor and that's makes the regen a lot weaker compared to twin motor. Regarding controls it may have changed since the test?
You have the map on the driver display at all times and you can easily switch between the music and the maps, etc, on the main screen with the infotainment hardware button summary.
Det är så konstigt! Äger Tesla 3 performance sen i våras.
Unfortiounantly 1-3 years to late! I had one of this when my Model Y was on paint job Worst car i ever had! Old tech! Small screen! Enormous consumption Also intresting to se that yo update charging but still have 11 kw when many other manufacturers have had 22 kw for a while now Its a really good test and presentation of the car but personally i think Volvo is in huge problems! They fall back extremly to other manufacurers is my feeling!
I see the XC40 as a good start and a test. As you say really not a class leading car, but still ok for people that transitions to EV. The real attempts ste the XC30 and XC90, the later is very late to the game. I'm hoping that the EX30 that comes beginning of next year will be good and sell well.

2024 and still only 233 miles of range. Seems market uncompetitive, especially for the price...
Shame that they did not use the interior of ex30. It looks more modern.
LLP range. EPA range makes it a non-starter. It’s 2024. Need well over 300 miles of EPA range.
293 miles of EPA on this one.
great review. I'm waiting for my new company car to arrive. I have gone for the Dual motor core spec and really looking forward to my first foray into the electric vehicle market. Will feel like a big change from my 2019 Ford Focus diesel.
That's a really big jump! You will enjoy it. It's good performance in the awd version 👍
Rear seat thigh support seems to be so narrow
Yes a bit narrow. I have very long legs though
I have ordered Single motor MY24 since June in Australia 🦘
Still in a waiting list 😔 the difference in the decor such as ambient light and gear knob and Harman Kardon, ain't included!! All of these sold on AWD twin motor which is my unable to reach 😵💫😭 but still excited to see and own it.
Nice, hope you get it soon. 🦘
@@ItsOnlyElectric 💕cool I will keep you posted 👑
Still waiting for my MY24. Been told April 2024. Very tempted to order an EX30 or Polestar 2 LR & see which one arrives 1st.
@captaindasbomb6862 maybe switch to a ex30 then? It's a bit smaller thsn the XC40 though.
24:45 new model? :)
Yes this is the updated XC40 2024, or what do you mean? 😃
Funny to see you calling the mobile phone stand an ashtray. If opened, the only thing that fits in is my cell phone.... And smoke from that interior part would be the battery of the phone starting to burn, I guess.
In which condition will you choose this over Model Y 2024? Model Y is now around 70000 SEK cheaper.
To be honest, no condition.
Nice 👍🏻
False lagom etymology but nice review. Pretty sure the Orrefors shifter comes with the interior, not the trim.
Ahh...that's how I learned about lagom but when I look it up now it seems to not be the case. 🙂
Of course it comes with the interior but for certain trim levels only. 😉
Tack! 🙂
I wish to see this car with 90kWh LFP battery from CATL and under 60k euros
Would be a great option
the nicest thing about volvo was always the front grill. now it looks bad. give me back the grills pls
I think it looks ok. They clearly made it to differentiate it from the combustion version. It has evolved since the release.
Considering current GEELY cars... The #1 would be a better than "lagom" choice? :)
Yes, the number one, but then we are talking about the new and modern platforms like the one The Zeekr001 or Lotus Eletre are built on.
Yes, you are right :) What I meant to say was #3... Sorry about that slip ! @@ItsOnlyElectric
@@MichaelMartinussen np.
🤘😎👌m-E-m
Yes, the juke tail light looks a lot volvoish
Why infotainment display is still old and vents are ugly ? :(
It's a car from 2018 and a small SUV, not volvos premium segment
Tack!👍🌹
Too bad the infotainment is outdated and small screen, otherwise almost perfect
i love the trash bin.
Smart feature
It’s ridiculous that you can’t have maps and media on the screen at the same time. Dealbreaker.
You have the map on the driver display at all times and you can easily switch between the music and the maps, etc, on the main screen with the infotainment hardware button summary.
Det är så konstigt!
Äger Tesla 3 performance sen i våras. Min första elbil.
Är helt ointresserad av typ alla andra elbilar.
Förr blanda jag mellan många olika märken. Bensinare.
Bmw, Citroen,Saab,Opel. Mercedes.
Why do european car makers never make reclyning back seat? While japanesse did it.
Good questions, japanese, Korean, Chinese and Tesla does it. Harder to find in European cars.
The Ford Kuga (same size car as this one) at least used to have reclining rear seats.
Unfortiounantly 1-3 years to late!
I had one of this when my Model Y was on paint job
Worst car i ever had!
Old tech! Small screen! Enormous consumption
Also intresting to se that yo update charging but still have 11 kw when many other manufacturers have had 22 kw for a while now
Its a really good test and presentation of the car but personally i think Volvo is in huge problems!
Don't call it EX40, it's using the old platform and interiors.
But it's renamed to EX40 by Volvo. Same car though
@@ItsOnlyElectric That's ridiculous what's next, EX60 using exactly the same car with a small battery? 🤣 At least the EX30 is a new vehicle.
@AboveInShadow haha! They are just aligning the names so the EV lineup for it to make more sense.
@@ItsOnlyElectric Same car, don't care.
Nice job! Thanks, still like my 3 Chevy bolts better!
Thanks 🙏 Your Bolt must be a master piece. Need to test one. 🙂
if infotainment and screen werent shit....
i have a 2022 electric Volvo with lot of problem , change the battery under warranty ( MADE IN CHINA ) and now the électric motor is very noisy back order from China , all the parts broke one after other, leak water inside like a pool, underneath rust ,
i pay for Volvo and i get a Chinese car , i have a Hyundai Kona with zero problem
will NEVER BUY VOLVO AGAIN
Sad to hear. Thanks for sharing.
You do understand that Volvo makes cars for people with no interest in cars at all? (mostly targeted against women). 😀
haha!! You have a point. Looking foward to the EX30, new platform new generation of Volvo.
That's the vast majority of people
Totally true!
I love cars. My current daily is a 911. I’ve just ordered a c40 twin through my company car scheme. My mate who’s current daily is an Evo 10 has just taken delivery of an xc60. If you know, you know.
@BluCat86 nice! whats the main reason for ordering a c40 twin?
Dont buy that sh*t car. No, you dont want to have ICE platform rebuilt for EV... Better go with SEA - EX30 or SPA2 - EX90... I drove XC40 and it was really terrible experience. Got one XC60 T5 MY19, will be buying EX30.
