One of the most common questions that I get on this channel is whether you can combine Boxing with Bodybuilding? Of course you can, but should you? This all begins with assessing your goals... Why are you doing boxing in the first place? Is it for recreational purposes or do you want to compete? Those two approaches are polar opposites and require different approaches.

At the gym I train at, of all the ~15 amateur fighters (and 1 pro), none of them are bodybuilders. You see these big bulky guys come into the beginner classes sometimes and they gas within minutes of doing drills. Not to say that any of the fighters don't have muscle, quite the opposite, but they aren't bodybuilders.

Same in my muay thai gym. Bigger guys are almost worse off because they're so uncoordinated and rigid in their movements

Thank you very much for addressing this topic, I am currently doing both 'recreational' boxing and bodybuilding and the toughest part is getting enough rest between workouts. Keep up the great work on the channel!!!

As an amateur powerlifter I find boxing training and running wind sprints to be very beneficial. Two very different workouts that seem to complement each other. Thanks for posting.

Because your focus is POWER, boxing and sprinting preserves your size without losing your wind and trains your cardio for that 1 Super Heavy Rep.

bodybuilding can also be a necessary means to box in a higher weight class

Very true, I think disregarding movements just because they are bodybuilding esque is bad, because while there are certain adaptions one needs to make to build not only mass but functional mass, inspiration from bodybuilding can certainly aid the muscle building progress of fighters. Examples can be found amongst the heavier divisions of any martial art, from Gordon Ryan to Alistair Overeem, if you are not in the 0.01% of people, you don't build 220+ Pounds of lean mass without applying basic bodybuilding training (and sometimes other aids xD) to a certain extent.

I wanna become a 200lbs+ lean boxer, but right now I only weigh 165lbs at 5'10. Do you think I could bulk up to around 215 with bodybuilding then when I cut, boxing will shred me down really quickly? @@bennodabaus

I love boxing but gym membership where I live is way too expensive. I was going and the coaches had ne training with the young guys who compete (im 43 yo) because I was in fight conditioning and have been training on my own for a decade. I want to compete against guys my age but I can't afford it.

Keep in mind that aside from heavyweights, a boxer by nature will always be in a caloric deficit…yet everyone’s scared of getting “too jacked” after a few bicep curls lol.

Blows my mind when I see just how little they know. They think that bodybuilding isnt ''functshional'' because you become a Mr Olympia after a few bicep curls lol. ''I dont want to get too big''. Dude you wont ever get too big, i wont get big. No one will ever get too big. Even roiders might not get too big since the effectiveness of roids is dependent on genetics and training. Lifting some weights isnt gonna screw you over. ruclips.net/video/tf46sph44_8/видео.html&

I can see it being applicable as a cardio variation but at a competitive level you’d be leaving a lot of whole in your game.
You can however use it a lot of boxing exercises to supplement cardio and let’s say your on a bulk, the joy you’d get doing something on active rest days other than treadmill work can possibly make it an active part of one’s routines

Trainers at my boxing gym say that bodybuilding is too much a boxer. The reason is because the bigger you are the slower you become. Also, men with big chest (Schwarzenegger, Stallone, etc) are wide open to getting hit. They recommend body weight exercises. Boxing isn’t a muscle sport.

I really want to become a competetive boxer, and have been training boxing for the past 2 years. I've only recently started "strength" training to increase my strength, but I feel like it may have an impact on my boxing career. Im not sure to whether just stick with boxing, or do both simultaneously. I'm just scared of losing muscle mass...

Start using ankle/wrist weights, weighted vests, medicine/slam balls, neck strengthener, kettlebells, dumbbells and resistance bands to add tension to your boxing training. Also Doing more reps in your bodyweight exercises with add strength and power to your boxing. Also checkout @Garage Strength for Sports-Specific Strength Training/Boxing.
