I was sent to an all-girls catholic school that handed out anti gay pamphlets on day one. I never felt safe at that school or near any religious things because (i would later find out) I was a gay trans man. This was 3-4 years ago and only now am I starting to trust some religious people. I don't think I will ever be comfortable in a church again, and I don't feel comfortable praying. I am scared that I will get hated because of that.

The main justification would be the religious practices but we don't know for sure what those were. There's some indication that child sacrifices could be part of it but we just don't know for sure. The Jewish/Christian view of the events is generally that if God wanted someone wiped out there was good reason, but that requires a certain degree of faith as the texts make it pretty clear God doesn't feel the need to explain himself.
