How a Russian FPV Drone Operator Reached 300+ Target Eliminations

  • When comparing old wars to modern wars, the key difference is the technology utilized. A prime example is the use of FPV drones. According to the Russian publication Izvestia, the skill of FPV drone operators now exceeds that of the renowned snipers from the Great Patriotic War.
It has been reported that a Russian soldier used FPV drones to take out more than 300 Ukrainian Armed Forces fighters, whereas the famous WWII sniper, Hero of the USSR Vasily Zaitsev, took down over 240 fascist soldiers. This raises the question: what makes these drones so effective compared to the renowned sniper?

Not actually nearly so binary. If you saw the video of Russian troops advancing across the canal at Kalina, you would realise how random it can be.
That event was when Ukraine troops completely left trenches and a whole section of the front unmanned and Russian advanced scouts moved in unopposed.
Ukraine only had some drones there. And at one point, just as Russian IFV drops off halfdozen soldiers, the drone drops a bomb at them.
Literally right in the center of 6 soldiers that just disembarked, out in the open, on the road next to trenches.
The bomb explodes in the middle of the soldiers.
And all it does is make them jump. ALL of them quickly runs off to the trench while the IFV drives off. All of them were literally within less than 2m from the bomb, and yet, not even one of them limped or something. Not a single hint of even the slightest injuries.
Also, it's worth repeating just how effective drone countermeasures are.
It's currently estimated that Ukraine is neutralising around 25-35% of Russian drones.
While Russia is neutralising around 65-80% of Ukraine drones.

Drones are the new kings of the battlefield.

    • @DIREWOLFx75
      @DIREWOLFx75 22 дня назад +5

      Nah, that remains artillery.
Drones have made the battlefield a drastically more dangerous place, but they have many limits and countermeasures against drones are being rapidly developed.
More and more russian vehicles are being issued drone jammers. Russian troops are getting issued with continually improved DEW anti-drone "rifles" and variations on automatic shotguns, while Russian EW troops are getting ever better at setting up jamming zones and hijacking drones.
There's literally a dozen+ new things tested every week, maybe even every day, by Russian troops. Some works well, like turtle tanks, others not so well or even at all.
But overall, the direction is very clear, and while far less energetic or capable, the Ukraine is also constantly improving their antidrone abilities.
In 5 years from now? When every Russian vehicle will have multiple drone jammers, and every company or battalion of troops will likely have their own drone-defense unit, and the EW troops have figured out what works and what does not, and have been given all the new equipment needed, at that point, Russia will probably be able to neutralise over 90%, maybe even over 95% of drones before they can hit anything.
And at that point, drones become very very expensive compared to their effect.
The west will never achieve the same level, due to lack of dedicated EW troops, but in 10 years from now, we will probably neutralise at least 2/3 of any attacking drones.
At what point does drones become too expensive for their usefulness?
Hence, why drones will everafter always be valuable, but PROBABLY more so for recon, than attack, because attacking means getting closer, and getting closer means both risking detection and destruction, but also greatly increases the risk of running into jamming.

  • @DIREWOLFx75
    @DIREWOLFx75 22 дня назад +23

    "what makes drones so effective?"
Mobility. A sniper is limited to what they can see, and moving is dangerous.
However, even more, is the fact of expendability. There's 2 parts to that.
1st of all is the fact that a single drone operator can use several drones per day. And each drone can kill several soldiers.
2nd is that drones can go places where humans cannot. A sniper can't just infiltrate several km past the frontline and find targets.
A drone CAN. And even if it's discovered and neutralised, so what? The drone OPERATOR just starts up another drone, maybe even to attack the people that neutralised the previous drone. Or if they're too good at taking down drones there, he just sends the next drone somewhere completely different.
Drones are NOT foolproof, drones are NOT automatically the best weapons ever, drones do NOT automatically make other weapons obsolete.
What they do, is make the battlefield drastically more dangerous.
It's currently estimated that Ukraine is neutralising around 25-35% of Russian drones.
While Russia is neutralising around 65-80% of Ukraine drones.
And it's only a matter of time before the Ukraine numbers increases, even if they wont ever reach the same counter drone ability as Russia, simply because Russia has dedicated EW troops that take down lots of drones every day, and no other nation has anything like that.
But still, by next year, it's likely that more than half drones total will be neutralised before attacking.
And Russia is making drone jammers in massive numbers already, and while they're still primitive, hundreds more are put in service every day.
How long before Russia is neutralising 90% of Ukraine drones?
It's impossible to predict, but drone countermeasures are advancing RAPIDLY.
If either side went back to the lack of drone CMs of 2022 today, casualties would increase VERY notably overnight.

I think the best counter against FPV drones is to use another drone, i.e. a hunter-killer drone. A drone designed to hunt down and destroy other drones. Equip it with an automatic shotgun like the AA-12 (maybe even 2), then have it patrol the skies near troop operations. Any drones can be engaged with the HK drone and destroy it with the shotguns.
For infantry I think carrying the 1216 shotgun would be best since it's semi-automatic, and has 4 tube magazines which can hold different types of ammo and has a high capacity. Birdshot is best for targets from point blank to about 45 meters away. A new type of shell that essentially combines a shotgun grenade (yes that's a thing) with a proximity fuse would work against drones from greater ranges. There's also anti-drone shells that fire nets which entangle the drone's rotors.

I wasn't envisioning it being an AI drone per se, although that's possible. But if it's human controlled, they would distinguish between friend and foe the same way that they have been doing so this entire time.
You can use it to hunt infantry, but that would require you to know where the infantry is in the first place. But since it uses a shotgun, birdshot isn't ideal for armored soldiers (assuming they have body armor at all). 7:37 Russia is producing approximately 300,00 drones monthly. If you think about the math: let's say every drone dropped a munition on several opposition forces. That means Ukrainian casualties could be up to 600-800,000+ per month. What if there was a 100% success rate. On the low end, let's say one kill per one drone, that's still 300,000 kills. Even at 30% success rate that's 90,000 kills.
Clearly the casualties that have been reported by Ukraine are not at all true. Considering that and all of the videos online of Ukrainian men being forcefully conscripted, I would bet their losses are unfathomable.

    This “punchline question” is flawed.
A 3rd grader can tell you:
    Sniper bullets are not guided,
Whereas a drone is constantly guided AND has benefit of FP camera view.

I would like to know where your stats came from? The first year and a half Russia could do almost nothing well. The training of pilots flying very expensive fighter jets is one of the worst programs of any country, how are they able to do so much great training now. It just does not seem to add up. This is why I asked where the info is coming from. If it is Russia, I do not believe a single word of it. I can not recall a single military thing that has been true.
