Mario Galaxy’s quicksand/swamp death is actually scary. The game actually allows you to mash buttons as an attempt to get out but it will only slow down your eventual death.
Mario Galaxy’s Dusty Dune is terribly scary. When Mario spins into one of the giant black hole pits and sinks, reaching out his hand in a last desperate attempt before sinking in the darkness ... it is frightening.
The SM64 death was one of my favorites cause it was of 2 instant death methods in the game where we got both Mario’s falling scream and Bowser’s evil laugh.

6:34 I still think that Sticker Star is a bit better than Color Splash. Because of that Game Over screen. Paper Mario is still damaged over a "floor" (like it was on N64/GCN) and there's still a bit of animation of the text. In Color Splash, simply everything goes white and the text just gently appears there, as nothing! It doesn't even blend so good with the BGO.
