I have the standard 1800 models and often experience the barrel part splitting at the parting seam. Often find the covers or the caps split or the O ring gives up or the actual white colored wiper worn out. Easy fix for the cover, replace it but when an 1800 sprinkler body splits open, you might not notice it until you get the water bill. It appears these RD1800 models are beefed up versions of the 1800 models and can take more cycles of operations vs. split at the parting seams. These are likely the most famous sprinklers and they are rather practical but the value of them has gone down since the prices have gone from about $3 each to $11 each for a 6" and $25 each for a 12".

At my dads work building there were normal rain bird pop ups and they stick up. Now they have hunter pro sprays and rd 1800.
If they down retract, replace the cap or the cover aka the wiper. $2 part.
