      that’s why i think ashley could reprise her role as ellie for season 2 and 3, since bella doesn’t quite look old enough to portray the terrifying animal that ellie becomes. no hate to bella, she was outstanding as young ellie, and i’d love to see her continue in the next seasons in the flashback sequences, but i think a more mature looking actress is needed to really bring the fear factor, intimidation and intensity of tlou2 ellie.
      i also realise ashley has now already played someone in the show, but with some makeup work she could be made to look different enough from anna that she is believable as a grown up ellie (they could also easily increase the time jump a few years to make it believable)

    • @carriesmith742
      @carriesmith742 Год назад +2

      Bella's already signed on to play Ellie. She is 19 IRL, which is how old Ellie is by the end of TLOU P2. Bella is just cursed with that baby face. Maybe they can age her up with makeup. They won't begin filming "in the spring" according to Pedro, so sometimes in the next few months and she will have multiple seasons to mature facially so fingers crossed that she'll blow us away even more and show us her acting chops as a more savage Ellie. She may not even be in every episode, given how the chapters in Part 2 worked. Either way I'm sure she'll be hitting the gym. 😊

Absolute 10/10 episode and probably the best of the season.

  • @iateabagelonce
    @iateabagelonce Год назад +43

    I think the "awkwardness" from Joel on the hike is the dissonance we and Ellie are feeling because it kinda feels like he's projecting Sarah's ideal onto Ellie. I don't think he's ACTUALLY doing it, but it feels like it because it comes right after his choice to save Ellie, and it feels like a selfish choice even though it saved Ellie's life. Ellie's voice sounds so hollow and full of dread the more he talks about Sarah - to me, it was like Ellie knew that Joel did something terrible at the hospital, because he's decided Ellie is his daughter, and after David and everything that's happened to Ellie, that doesn't mean the same thing it might have meant if that had happened a little earlier in the story.

    • @philipsparks6089
      @philipsparks6089 Год назад +4

      When he said that she healed his wounds i feel like thats when she really felt the resentment. She realized that the only reason he kept her around is because he needs her. His own selfishness and desire to fulfill the hole that Sarah left is the only reason Ellie is there… she just felt more used

    • @iateabagelonce
      @iateabagelonce Год назад +2

      @@philipsparks6089 Oh I love this. The idea that Ellie is thinking, "I wouldn't be here if Joel hadn't already lost Sarah" - the idea that she feels overshadowed by the saintly ideal of Sarah's nonexistence - that she isn't loved just for being her. OUCH. It makes so much sense that Joel would make that mistake and simply not see it in himself, especially when he's trying so hard to uphold this fantasy that he and Ellie are going to be a happy family together for the rest of their lives.
      SPOILERS FOR TLOU2 AHEAD:
      I think this perspective would add so much to Ellie and Joel's relationship falling apart in S2. In the game, Joel's wrongdoing felt almost neatly packaged into his one big lie. Here, yeah he lied to her, but he's ALSO projecting and adding to Ellie's insecurities without even realizing it. So when Ellie turns her back on him in S2, I would love it if we got a little bit of Joel needing to confront THOSE mistakes too. Joel is so much less idealized in the show and I find it fascinating and hauntingly realistic.

A longer second season wouldn't be enough. Notice how I never mentioned gameplay but actual story. The showrunners have already stated that the second game will be divided into season two and season three. Now the fun part will be to see how they manage this. Especially how the second game is structured. They're going to have to change the story structurally.

    Ashley Johnson started off the episode perfectly.
    I never played... I watched a few streamers play but I've never seen the start or the finish. Honestly, I let it play while doing something else at the same time. I can't remember what I was watching or if it really was the game but the operation room scene seemed the most familiar. I don't even remember if I watched long enough to recognize or remember if they played the 2nd game.
    Joel took more initiative in reaching out and it seemed a bit awkward because he hasn't done that in so long. But I loved the writers and directors for that. Of course, a bit of praise goes to Din, um, Pedro Pascal.
    The shot near Joel's ear, I thought he might have been grazed when Sarah was shot and he never wanted to speak more about it. Their story of it made tons more sense.
    When trying to find Ellie, the person who surrendered, I didn't give him any chance of being spared. Joel would not have made it to her if he did.
    After watching the episode I watched the special on the making of TLOU and the details of everything else made me appreciate this series even that much more.
    Now the painful wait for the second season to come. At least I can watch other/newer reactors and their videos. I might even watch the complete story in the meantime.
    Thank you for your insights and your opinions of the series and a bit of the game.
    Take care, Omn1

It's easier for her to make that choice for Ellie otherwise she very well was willing to force her. I don't believe Joel would have accepted Ellie's decision either way if she did choose to do it. I imagine he would have waited for them to put her under and then do exactly what he did and lie. Marlene's only chance was to get Joel out and have the procedure done as fast as they could. But we can only speculate on the what ifs :)

    I admire the ending and the manner in which it divides people. It also showcases that Joel is a flawed character all while demonstrating that love is not the pure thing that people believe it is. With love comes the fear of loss, which can cause a person to act irrationally and selfishly. This initiative spits on Tess's sacrifices and hopes while also taking away Ellie's belief in her life's purpose. We recognise why Joel did it and in another series them ending together would've been considered a happy ending. But it can't really be perceived as such in this case because it comes at the cost of lying to Ellie spite of knowing why she wanted to be the cure and spitting on Tess sacrifice, which is why I love this story.

      While being the cure seems important to Ellie, you also have to consider the fact that this is the only thing Ellie has been told she’s good for in a world that she sees is suffering decades later because of the outbreak. It's obvious her severely traumatized, impressionable, adolescent mind is going to think her compliance to this is the most important thing. It’s the only thing she thinks she has to live for, when she should be allowed her own choice, free from outside influence. If this was fresh off the QZ Ellie and she had decided to die for the cure instead of just giving her blood like she initially assumed, i wouldve hated Joel. But it just doesn't sit right with me that the severely traumatized 14 year old had to make that call right then and there. Also it doesn't sit right that they never woke her up to explain the procedure and let her have a final goodbye w Joel. She's not an experiment for good sake's, this was a child that was gonna die for the benefit of everyone else

      It's worth mentioning that Marlene and the Fireflies didn't give Ellie a choice either. I personally don't believe in the "greater good" at all costs method they espouse. It's exceedingly unfair to pin the hopes of the world on a 14 yeard old, essentially manipulating her into sacrificing her life for a cure that might not even work. Nevermind the ethics of going through with the surgery without consent or understanding of what it meant.
      Do I believe Ellie would have chose to sacrifice herself for the world? Yes. But consent matters even at the end of the world.

    I feel bad for Marlene. She made the hard decision, and despite Joel's rampage she still tried to reason with him instead of straight up just ending him and getting Ellie back. The chance of a cure isn't guaranteed but a chance is enough to risk it, plus it's what Ellie would have wanted, that's why SPOILER...
    she was angry with Joel in the sequel and that's why Joel hid the truth from her the entire time.

    I'm so glad they kept the giraffe scene; I'm not sure why but that's one of the few scenes that really stuck with me from the game, and I was prepared to be disappointed, guessing they might cut it because CGI would look bad, or setting up with a real giraffe might be difficult and impractical...FYI I was told it was a real giraffe!
    Also, they've already said Ep 2 would be broken up into 2 seasons.

    I think the dialogue going up the hill was intended to be awkward. Joel’s not good at talking about such things to begin with, he knows shes in a fragile state and this is almost certainly the first time in nearly twenty years he’s probably verbalized these things. It’d be a little odd if he just spoke about it completely normally. I also couldn’t quite shake the disquieting feeling that there was something.. a little bit disturbed about how Joel was acting. Maybe that’s too strong a word but the scene really did not hit as wholesomely as I’d have expected such a scene would.
    I also hope they put an emphasis next season when it comes back around, which I don’t know the games but clearly it must somehow, on that this should have been Ellie’s choice. Not Marlene or Joel’s. Also really hope they drive home that even without them telling her, which they absolutely should have, Joel still knew what Ellie’s choice would be. her speech about Riley left me with little doubt what she would have done given the choice. Just the fact the last death she brings up was Sam, I feel like Ellie absolutely would go through with this just for a chance at saving another kid like Sam. I think that’s why his lie to her was so painful to see, he lied because he knew she would not have wanted this.
