Thanks for the excellent customer service and really helpful videos. I did go back and ratch it a few times. I ordered the parts. And this 67 year old woman just replaced the torsion shaft, torsion spring and tension cables on a 16 foot door all on her own!! Can't thank you enough. Just go slow and pay attention to the video. Cheers!!!

John thanks brother! That was my goal to help as many people as possible. There are always 2 groups of people those that will just hire someone to do the job for them and then the other group that wants to do it themselves. I wanted to help make it easy and as safe as possible for those diy people. Thanks again for the support!

Kyle thanks for your helpful videos. I was able to take my garage door completely apart and put it back together. I made my own cables. I tightened my springs and the door opens great now. I just saved over $200. I plan to replace the bottom panel next year. Thanks again.

One of the cables on our garage door jumped off the drum and the door got twisted. We ended up having to take the entire thing apart, panel by panel, removing the other cable as well in the process. I got all the panels reinstalled but still needed to reconnect the cables. Every video I'd find on replacing the cables wanted you to raise the door first, which is NOT possible to do manually with a 16' door, so I needed another option. Your video gave me the exact info I needed (replacing/reconnecting the cables with the door closed) so thank you for that!

I have been procrastinating replacing my daughters garage door cables as she has a solid wood double wide garage door and all of the videos I have watched show either the garage door closed and working from the sides, which can't happen with her door because of shelving. The others that I have seen have you release all the tension from the springs, which I hate to do as it takes almost 40 - Quarter turns of the springs to get the door balanced.

Hey Kyle, great video exactly what i was looking for. Excellent explanation of the cable operation. I am going to place an order of these cables, exactly for the reason you described of where the cables rub each other in the last two feet of the door opening and it is very frustrating, considering it is a brand new clopay door with ez set torsion spring and as you know the drums on those are small but very wide so the cables almost starts to wrap around one another right before the door is open all the way.

I guess if I was gonna do short cuts I'd clamp the door up and used a vise grips on the torque tube (there should only be about 1 turn or less spring turns on it with the door up) and do each side one at time. If you're lucky and your new cables are the correct length, you won't have to adjust anything. Otherwise you'll have to adjust the drums.
I guess your way automatically corrects for the cable variations, so I guess I see the advantage of this method.

I got ahead of myself when replacing the rollers, and I mistakenly removed the red screws from the bottom door bracket. (They were not red on my door like they are in other videos.) Luckily the cables onle pulled up the bracket about 4 inches. So I used a C-clamp to make sure it doesn't move any further or fly off from the tension. So what do I do now? How do I reattach the bracket and cable safely. I do not have the winding bars to secure the main coil. What can I use instead to secure the coil?

    • @diygaragedoorparts8206

You really need some winding bars to back wind the springs. You can get some 1/2" cold rolled steel bars to use for a set.

If a cable breaks and you try to open and close the door it will bend your track and possibly rollers come out of the track. The best thing to do is leave it alone until you get the cables and replace them.

    • @diygaragedoorparts

Just one as long as you have the set keys tightened to the torsion shaft. By doing that it connects everything together and then winding bar is holding all the tension.
