      As far as Nintendo goes, that is always how it ends up at the second half of a console life span. I guess gimmicks used to work as a selling point before with the Wii and DS. But Nintendo usually end up not using said gimmicks after a few years. Switch is no exception with Arms and Ring Fit for example.
      Nintendo is probably doing the opposite this time, luring people in with good games and maybe use the gimmicks further down the console life span. Exciting!

      You do need some creative hardware to make the games look good and played or did something new that wasn't experienced before as well something like Rare's 3D Polygon Pre-Render Machine managed to make 3D Graphics fit on a SNES without need for FX Chip nor 32X like attachments for example. There are some games that run from the machine that wasn't meant to work well might hinder some issues for the game like Street Fighter 1 on the Jamma did technically made the game not balanced properly back then, Ys III on PC-88 did had Paralax Scrolls problems on the PC-88 wasn't good with it to use for the PC-88, and even some MSX games that have platformers and Shumps have Scrolling Issues that is bit choppy. Technically the Nintendo Switch 1 console did had some performance issues on the later Switch games that wasn't properly set up like Pokemon Scarlet & Violet for example that it does have some animation problems on overworld map and the player had to be close to the NPCs to see the animations better. I do think the Nintendo Switch 2 would have better hardware to make the performance better for future games.

    I think it's often overlooked that Nintendo consoles have basically always been in pairs with a new revolutionary idea followed by an iterative upgrade
    NES -> SNES (2D sprite-based games)
    N64 -> GameCube (3D games with analog controls)
    Wii -> Wii U (Motion controls)
    GB -> GBA (2D portable gaming)
    DS -> 3DS (Dual screens, 3D games)
    Switch -> Switch 2 (Hybrid console)

    37:52 Here’s the thing… you don’t see big heads at Nintendo ever leave for another company. With Western studios yes, and even some in Japan. But Miyamoto, Tezuka, Aonuma, and so many others have been there for decades. At any point they could leave and join any other AAA Japanese studio if they wanted, but they don’t. So clearly they must be doing something right to keep people there.
    I only know of the Star Fox artist leaving, and that was so he could make his own manga, so a different pursuit he couldn’t fulfill at Nintendo (although he did make a visual novel sort of game from it).

    • @leonro
      @leonro 6 дней назад +2

      That's just the mentality of Japanese people. Whereas western people are more individualistic and will jump ship if given a better opportunity (not just salary wise, but also career wise), eastern people think of themselves more as a collective, so without any exceptional circumstances they will normally stay with the same company until it goes under or they get fired. And laying people off is also very frowned upon, so it's a last resort for when things really aren't going well. While you might see the eastern mentality as being better, the lack of flexibility can also pose serious issues with workplace stagnation and being left in the dust when it comes to modern developments. As with all things in life, both have pros and cons, and the best variant is to be somewhere in the middle.

    My immediate response to the question was "Does the Switch 2 NEED to be creative?" I mean sure, creativity isn't a bad thing, but being creative for the sake of being different and unique... I mean we saw how few big games from Xbox 360 and PS3 had a version for Wii regardless of Wii's success. Then there's the Wii U which is, well the Wii U.
    Instead of being creative for the sake of being creative and different, I think it's a good idea for the system to have some degree of parity with current consoles for the sake of 3rd party support. But maybe I just want FF7R Trilogy on Switch 2. 😆

      Well, expect something comparable to a steam deck. The tech Nintendo is supposedly using for the switch 2 is rather old (2020 tech), but given the slow advancements in modern computing technology it won't be much different from newer hardware. Speaking of, I'm curious to see how next gen consoles will improve upon current ones, considering that at similar prices they can't put out much better hardware than what they currently have.

  • @HotdogDivebomb

    The suggestion that Nintendo should avoid creativity in hardware just because it would be hard to replicate after the console is gone is just horrible. Game preservation is important, but it should never be used as an excuse to stifle creativity and innovation.

  • @Miisee
    @Miisee 8 дней назад +11

    Personally I've always valued how creative and "innovative" Nintendo's hardware can be. I think it's as significant to their identity as their games are.
    I'm not upset that we're getting more iterative system. In fact, it's far from it. The hybrid model still has a lot of life in it with a lot more avenues to explore, so I'm glad we're still keeping it going into the next generation, but I also want Nintendo to keeo being innovative and creative with their hardware too. The alleged mouse mode seems to be just that.
    We still have an April Direct with more info, so I imagine there may be even more suprises when it comes to how fun and quirky the hardware and software can be.

  • @RicoLee1218
    @RicoLee1218 8 дней назад +5

    I think Nintendo being creative and innovative with the games for Switch 2 just makes more sense now. You can design games from the ground up to be as innovative as you want and accommodate and retool them to make things work alot more easily than you can hardware-wise and that's generally where Nintendo's at their best and most innovative anyway. None of their wacky console gimmicks before the Switch truly caught on, and it makes sense why. Motion controls and a second screen were never meant to or realistically going to be as revolutionary for everyone as something like the jump to 3D with analog control was. That was never gonna happen a second time. It just doesn't work that way. Hardware is mostly standardized for a reason. Games have far more room and opportunities and ways to innovative than hardware itself does, especially on a control level for the most part. Games aren't locked in when they release as rigidly as consoles themselves are, so that's why innovations generally stick and work alot better and impress far more there anyway, especially for Nintendo.
    There's a reason why Nintendo's most innovative games outlive the consoles they debuted on. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Breath of the Wild were innovative enough on their own, the GamePad wasn't what made them both mainstays, you know? Nintendo's innovations are best in-game and I'm glad they're doubling down on that for Switch 2 and making whatever new control innovations it does have like the Mouse-Con a smart and sensibly surprising evolution of what already worked before rather than just doing something random just because, because having a nuanced Nintendo innovation is far more innovative and truly Nintendo and interesting in the long run than gimmicks for the sake of gimmicks ever were anyway, as fun as the Wii and Wii U's gimmicks were at the time.
    Nuance is way better for innovative Nintendo than not and those gimmicks didn't really have nuance at all in hindsight.

  • @Torinna_

  • @mectainea5575
    @mectainea5575 8 дней назад +4

    With how things are, they’ve basically reached an apex of what they’ve already done. Like they already have the innovations of the snes controller layout, N64s introduction of the joystick, gamecubes compact design, wii’s motion controls (with the joycons also being a wii mote successor) and the portability of their handhelds with the wii u gamepads form factor.
    Only big thing I can think of for them to do is VR (or somehow bringing duel screens back) which they already have a framework for. so if the tech is affordable then maybe a switch 3 could implement VR in a very accessible form of the console itself doubling as a VR headset on top of its docked and handheld modes.

    As someone who has been pretty unhappy with the Switch overall, I do agree its premature to say the Switch 2 isn't going to offer the creativity we love from Nintendo. I just hope they don't rest on their laurels, and they use what they've learned throughout this cycle to offer the most interesting games and best console experience they ever have. They're definitely going to have to set the tone with their own releases for Switch 2 while they and likely other developers are going to continue releasing more games for Switch 1 as the install base is so massive. My only worry is if they won't have the resources to do that. They don't have another failed console's library to fill out the down time between major releases, and I don't believe I'm the only one with great remake/remaster fatigue.
    It's absolutely true that Nintendo has gone through several generations focused on iteration over major innovation (SNES, GameCube, GBA, 3DS, etc), and those periods are typically my favorite time to be a Nintendo fan. Here's hoping the Switch 2 can win me over where the previous failed to.

    24:27 Ironically, very few of the ideas in the Wii U gamepad were new. The DSI already had a microphone, camera, and touchscreen, and the later 3DS had a gyroscope. The only “new” thing from a hardware standpoint was the NFC reader, which other companies like Activision were already doing. The failure of the gamepad comes from taking ideas fit for mobile and putting them into a console, and thus tanking the potential performance and hardware value.

    So, I apologize if I missed some parts, since I had this on the background, but I wanted to reiterate some of the cool aspects y'all have touched upon and maybe add my take in that may not be too separate from yours.
    I like what y'all said about Nintendo incorporating accessories with games instead of essential for merely booting up the system, like the Wii and its pointer controls.
    Touching on this, besides the obvious optical sensor that looks real, a good way to simulate less of a mouse-scrolling feel, which is more accurate, if you wanted the pointer controls of the Wii for Wii games already out (Super Mario Galaxy as part of 3D All-Stars, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, and Metroid Prime Remastered either having pointer-like controls or options for them), they could merely add a strap that has an infrared sensor out of the way of the player's hands whether it be on the Z, L, R, or any other Buttons, with an infrared sensor, wireless or wirable through a USB port on a dock or some kickstand that has the USB ports for tabletop mode (HORI has at least a few licensed ones kickstands with USB ports, but Nintendo can make their own).
    However, there is the downside, and those are the games you mentioned: Nintendo LABO and Ring Fit Adventure. Having RFA, I've rarely played that and most of the optional leg strap is used for Nintendo Switch Sports, which doesn't require the leg strap for soccer (but is much better with it, in my opinion). Also, PlayStation is cited as bringing in revolutionary accessories, but many of them, like the Move Controllers, even when incorporated into their VR systems only to be discarded for Sense Controllers for PSVR2, seem like they lack long-term support, and maybe because novelty accessories are just that: novelties. I just wish there was more support for these systems, but even the Wii died an early death despite being initially successful as the Move and Kinect came out.
    I mentioned HORI, and they started making the left side controller with the Control Pad before making the Split Pad on both sides. I wouldn't mind if the next Pro Controller, since I assume the first one will still work with Nintendo Switch 2, is a "Joy-Con Pro" which is just the Pro Controller but split in half, with a chargeable grip included, but one that could be used in handheld mode. I also think an alternative for the right "Joy-Con Pro" as a separate accessory (or bundled for more as a separate listing, likely) is in place of the Right Stick could be a "C-Pad", which could be a touchpad designed more for handheld play for shooter-like games that could still work with panning cameras in platformers well enough where I'd prefer this as my default handheld layout. The larger Right Stick is better, but I'd prefer a touchpad for aiming, in addition to gyro-aiming. Obviously, this would be primarily used for handheld play, but it could be incorporated with the optical sensor, the infrared sensor, and gyro-aim in docked or tabletop mode.
    These are all accessories we may not see initially, but they can include later down the line. This part is also a bit excessive, but we could see attachments plugged into one of the USB Type-C ports on the system (I believe there are at least two), like a screen holder for a second screen, which could just be a second system, from a Lite to another Switch 2 to a separate, cheap 3D model Nintendo will overcharge for to add the 3D effects for 3DS games.
    Another aspect is that even if it doesn't include a projector at launch, there could be an accessory to plug into one of the USB-C ports to add one from the back, so playing in tabletop mode can enlarge the image on a flat wall, rather than being confined to admittedly a large screen, but presumably still small for multiplayer players.

    The question of "what difficulty do you generally prefer" is a fun one to think of it. I'm of a similar mind to Brandon and Steve here in that I'll usually play a game on normal; if it's the baseline difficulty the developers reccomend, that's usually the difficulty which will provide me the most enjoyment.
    I will also add that I do love when there's either an option to change the difficulty on the fly in a game, since it allows me to make a specific game harder or easier depending on how I feel about the game. With Spider-man PS4, for example, I started on the standard difficulty: however, since I've played a lot of Batman Arkham and a lot of the combat here felt like it was in the same vein, I found standard to easy for my tastes and was delighted to be able to up the difficulty on the fly.
    I also really like when games add really hard optional challenges to games: think the True Arena in a Kirby game or superbosses in a Final Fantasy. For me, having the option to seek out greater challenge at my leisure during the adventure or in post-game is oftentimes more motivating and more fun than simply assigning myself a higher difficulty level from the start.

    If the mouse joycon mechanic is true, that feels creative enough for a sequel console. I just hate how bland the branding is. Someone on twitter designed the Perfect logo with the S & 2 fused into an analog stick shape that wiggled left and right. Would've been Perfect! Nintendo need to pay that artist NOW and implement into all the branding before the april direct!

    I feel like the next big innovation will be an AR platform that projects onto a specially designed tabletop board...
    BUT I don't think Nintendo will be the ones behind it. I think it will be a Tamagotchi or Digivice that accidentally succeeds more than intended.

No. We may never, ever see a Nintendo system run like Elder Scrolls VI day one. But! The Switch2 IS going to be what it is: a better Switch. It doesn't need to be creative. "Creativity" does not equal long term success. The Wii fell off quickly in 2010 and the Wii U was a failure. The Wii was not the success Nintendo needed because it was a fad which contributed to the Wii U's failures.
    And no, you can't force consumers to like gimmicks. No amount of upset Wii U fans can change that. No one wanted a lame console with little to offer.
    The Switch is a combination of all of Nintendo previous ideas and it worked. The Switch 2 being a noticeable power boost which is exactly why people want. They want games to be innovative and have them run smoothly. A console needs a healthy library of games to succeed. Turn off third parties will lame gimmicks will lead to failure in today's times. No one wants to spend 3 digit numbers to play scrimblo the lame 2.5 platformers. Folks want a variety of games to play while Nintendo works on first party games. Quality third party games is crucial to a console's success. Which the N64, GCN. Wii. and Wii U struggled with.
    The concept of having decent third parties games on a Nintendo console seems like a foreign concept to Nintendo fans. You need BOTH first party and third party games to succeed.

    Nintendo are toy makers. That's how they treat their games, and their consoles. They will only change their hardware approach if they find new ways to create joy and new ways to play. It seems that with Switch 2, they decided that the dockable tablet & joy-con format is still the most interesting and fun way to play games, with what looks like a few minor additions. Nothing wrong with this, though it might only make the Switch 2 generation shorter than Switch 1; i.e. we might have the Switch 2 successor by like 2030 or something, if Nintendo find a new innovation that they feel would be worth pursuing.

    • @RageReq0
      @RageReq0 8 дней назад

      Honestly I think Nintendo is moreso about gimmicks than "ooh creativity".
      And while yes some gimmicks can be considered creative, not all of them are(such as your example of the 3DS, 3D wasn't creative but it was an interesting gimmick)
      They always try to add a gimmick that will set their products apart from the competition.

    • @Katie-hb8iq
      @Katie-hb8iq 8 дней назад +2

      @@RageReq0 Yep, the gimmick of the Switch 2 is pretty similar to the 3DS. The 3DS was just a more powerful DS, but it had the 3d feature most people didn't use. I think the mouse input on the joycons is equivalent to that, but could actually turn out to be a good deal more useful. But at its core, in the same way the 3ds was just a more powerful ds, the switch 2 is a more powerful switch. That's how I see it anyway. Considering both are handhelds, Nintendo is really just doing what was successful in the past. I think people are over-reacting about how "un-Nintendo" the Switch 2 is. It's very similar to the 3ds.
      The Switch 2, as a name, even sounds lazy, but it has a double meaning. It has 2 switch functionalities - the original Switch, but now it has a joycon Switch, so Switch 2.

    • @Klaxynd
      @Klaxynd 8 дней назад +1

      @@Katie-hb8iq I'd disagree slightly on that because for the time glasses-free 3D was really creative and interesting. It may not have impacted much overall, but I wouldn't argue it wasn't creative. That being said the 3DS also had gyro which I'd say was a substantial feature for a handheld gaming platform.

    • @Katie-hb8iq
      @Katie-hb8iq 8 дней назад +1

      @@Klaxynd I think you misread. I never said it wasn't creative. My main point is that the bulk of what the 3ds offered was a more powerful ds. We know this because it didn't sell due to the 3d feature, it got steam from the games people wanted to play. The Switch 2 will be no different.

      yet wii u has been the biggest failure in recent gaming history

    • @mbc2120
      @mbc2120 8 дней назад +4

      The thing is the Wii U never did anything that justified itself. Most games didn’t make great use of the gamepad, and the games that tried to were pretty gimmicky or cumbersome (star fox). Having access to map and inventory in stuff like Zelda and Pikmin was neat but not game changing.

    • @hoagieimpact9189
      @hoagieimpact9189 8 дней назад

      @mbc2120 I'm probably in the minority because I got used to Starfox Zero's controls and 2-screen-action in no time. The only problem with Starfox Zero was slow copter/robot sections in formerly epic areas such as Zoness. Arwing, a couple Landmaster, and one or two Submarine stages is all Starfox needs. The new vehicles are slow and stupid and their missions aren't nearly as fun as the Arwing stages. This is what really dragged the gameplay down.
      Also, the Wii U is essentialy the best console for some games because a few games really made perfect use of the GamePad. Super Mario Maker 1 is a billion times more comfortable on that console, and so are other games like Splatoon 1. Even Xenoblade Chronicles X will lose that resource gathering map routing game running in realtime on the second screen. They must remove an immersive QoL feature and bury it into an option menu on Switch.
      The only reason there still is no Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD on Switch is because the Wii U versions are perfect and the Switch version can only be worse. Hell, they removed Wii U features from Breath of the Wild so they run the same on both consoles!!
      Furthermore, the DS/3DS/Wii U touchscreen as a whole had pinpoint accuracy needed for creative games like Nintendo Land, Kirby & The Rainbow Curse, Game & Wario, or Art Academy. The Switch touchscreen is for mobile games, and it can't be used as a second screen. It's useless.
      The Wii pointer had less problems than the Switch pointer as well.
      Come on man. The Switch has worse gimmicks!
