Night And Day - Cole Porter

  • Like the beat beat beat of the tom-tom
    When the jungle shadows fall
Like the tick tick tock of the stately clock
As it stands against the wall
Like the drip drip drip of the raindrops
When the summer shower is through
So a voice within me keeps repeating
    You, you, you
Night and day, you are the one
Only you beneath the moon or under the sun
Whether near to me, or far
It's no matter darling where you are
    I think of you
Day and night, night and day, why is it so
That this longing for you follows wherever I go
    In the roaring traffic's boom
In the silence of my lonely room
    I think of you
Day and night, night and day
    Under the hide of me
There's an oh such a hungry yearning burning inside of me
And this torment won't be through
Until you let me spend my life making love to you
Day and night, night and day
    by Cole Porter

This shouldn't matter one way or the other, however I will state it anyway. I am a 60 year old African American male born and reared in Brooklyn New York my entire life to date. And this by far is one of my favorite songs of all time. And I'm by no stretch of the imagination bougie. But I been hearing different versions of this song in an assortment of movies since I was very, very young and it just does something for me. It's a profoundly beautiful song to me and it hits the heart strings. Mr. Porter I don't know anything about his politics or his views on race relations. But I do know this he was one hell of a song writer, one of the best.

@wheresyaya6792 Thank you. I'm sorry for the late response 😁 Yes some songs just touch your soul. And can even make a demon(not me, 😆) feel all warm and tingly inside. Song like Billy Joel and Barry White's, Love you just the way you are. And the Four Tops I believe In you and me. Those songs rip open my big old heart and turn me inside out. Into undulating waves of emotion that I savior the whole day from the time I first played them. And just like Night and Day puts me to sleep with a deep, calm that lasts me the entire night through. Until I start once again at the first light of the next day 😆.

This song tells its age beautifully. Its emotion still intact, and yet so old. It speaks in expressions long gone. It comes from another time, another mind. It barely fits in todays world and that makes it somewhat eerie, but beautiful.

      @larrysparano87 4 месяца назад

Yes, you've described the haunting beauty of it, of the almost eerie yet nostalgically comfortable feeling it evokes --a feeling of yearning and need and eternal attachment. Until I read your comment, I struggled to articulate the emotions it stirs. Well said!

You are correct in 'People never did "write like this" '. He was unique as well. However, there were other musicians of the era just as talented and unique. The Gershwin brothers, for instance. Scott Joplin, for another. My memory is failing me right now, but there are others.

For decades now, I"ve listened to Little River Band's song, Reminiscing, and in the chorus, it talks about how they 'danced across the room' to "those Porter tunes..." with "Night and Day" sung by backing vocals. So it only took me about 40 years to finally play Night and Day by Cole Porter. Beautiful song. Loved it. Harkens back to a far better time.

Also give the year and the recording label, if any, and WHERE it was recorded. It's all basic history stuff and very important for researchers and those who are listening today.

Obviously, it is the great Fred Astaire singing, but you have it labeled as if it was Cole Porter singing.

Thank you, Luke. This was the first recording of the song that I had ever heard. It was several years ago on the radio, and I didn't know who the singer was until I stumbled on this RUclips page today. Have had to rely on Sinatra since then until now. No offense to Frank, but I like Astaire's rendition much better.

I lived in Lisbon, Portugal, in the 60's. There was a self-service restaurant ( not far from the American Embassy ) called "NIGHT & DAY". Their adds on the Radio always played this great song. I have admired COLE PORTER ever since.. 💖

You were so lucky to live in Lisbon in the 60's. What a wonderful place it was then. My parents took my sister and me camping by road from England to stay in Campismo de Monsanto 3 consecutive years. It was a paradise then; only the sounds of nature and glorious smells of the pine forest. I still dream about it!

    Hola.
    Un gusto.
: Una melodía preciosa , evocadora e inmortal.
    Recomiendo :
    "Reminiscing " - Little River Band ( 1978 )

This song is simply fantastic, it reminds me of my childhood when jazz music was the boom. I think Night and Day and Begin the Beguine are the best romantic songs ever written. And, Fred Astaire sings as superbly as he dances.

I am semi-retired and deliver medications on a route that passes the cemetery in Peru, Indiana where Cole is buried. I have a friend here in Fort Wayne, Indiana who is related to Porter. I also have Hoosier connection to James Dean, as my father graduated from the same high school in Indiana that Jim attended and Jim frequently rode on the back of my father's 1940 Indian Chief motorcycle when Jim was between the ages of nine and twelve. Jim wrote a few letters to my father when he was in the merchant marine during WWII.

I compared this video with: The Essential Cole Porter, 3 disc set on CD2, 01 song is Fred Astaire - Night and Day. Yes it sounds exactly the same. Hopefully this has solved the problem!
I only heard of Cole Porter a few years and the purchase of this 3 disc set is without doubt one my best music purchases.

NV had a more western feel to it though. I'd say this is more Eastern. More specifically, it feels to me like it's North Eastern-ish, being lie New York or Pennsylvania area. Although, that's just my take on it.
