Janis Joplin did see Jimi at the Monterey festival. There is even a brief shot of her smiling at Jimi's performance there. Later, both Jimi & Janis performed at another venue on the same night, I think Bill Graham's Fillmore West, and reportedly, between sets, "got to know each other better" in a locked dressing room!
