I'm so very fortunate to have experienced WDW in '94 and '95 thanks in no small part to the opening of Shades of Green. I still have my used Stars and Stripes ticket (admission to River Country USA included!).
Ah, the height of when my family had annual passes… when deluxe resorts were only mildly overpriced, and when Alien Encounter scared the crap out of people, LOL.
The Spaceship Earth post show venue was called Communication Breakthrough not Communication Breakdown. And it didn’t open until early 1995. I was the computer programmer on the project.
‘Honey, I Shrunk the Audience’ is a little underrated, in my opinion. That’s not to say it’s not a renowned attraction, but 8-year-old me getting sneezed on by Quark, technologically, I may as well had been on another planet! The good old days.
While Muppet-Vision 3D is probably the height of theme park 3D movies as far as a total experience goes, Honey I Shrunk the Audience was wonderful. A virtually-unique use of the format in how it was staged, a hilarious script, some great scares -- it's a shame that it's overlooked now compared to Captain EO as far as the Epcot films go.
@@roristevens2810 HOT COUNTERTAKE: “Honey, I Shrunk The Audience” was intergrel to the downfall of the Imagination Pavilion. While the 3-D film was charming, it’s “hilarious” main character Dr. Nigel Channing would go on to utterly RUIN “Journey Into Imagination”…
Extraterrorestrial was the greatest attraction ever made....seeing kids and adults getting off that crying was hilarious. My cousin who was 10 at the time still has nightmares lol
We just stayed in Shades of Green again this past weekend and I had NO idea it existed as something else before the DoD bought the property! Honestly believed it was built as a military-exclusive from the start and never questioned it because: 1. There are several military bases in FL so it’s a sound assumption 2. There are Armed Forces deals throughout most FL parks to this day That tidbit was incredible to learn! 🤯
Wonderful video that brought back so many memories. I went the following year, stayed at the All-Star sports (in the baseball section) ,and many elements in this video I remember immersing and experiencing. Thank you for putting the time, energy, and heart and soul into making these nostalgic videos. Cannot wait for your next video of 1995 The last year when I went to Disney World in the 1990s. If it at all helps you with your next video, I remember the toy story parade at what was then MGM studios, and there was a photo opportunity with a board to get your picture taken with Jim Carrey as Ace Ventura promoting his upcoming film, “ ace Ventura When Nature Calls”. I thought it was a strange thing to promote in a Disney park, and I don’t know if the Ace Ventura franchise was even Disney connected. I also remember at Epcot that they were starting to little by little take down Workd of Motion, to what would eventually be test track. Lastly, I believe it was one of the last years that Magic Kingdom had gondolas in the sky. I think it was called the sky mover or something like that. To me it kind of reminded me ofwhat we have now The Skyliner gondolas as part of Disney park transportation.
Very good job covering a lot of activities that year! I try to pretend Galaxy Search was a fever dream until I'm reminded it actually happened. I love live entertainment but I remember being in a constant state of cringe watching that show. Disney has a gigantic in-house songbook but paid for rights to outside songs and built a whole weird show around it.
Amazing that I saw Apple computers at EPCOT thinking I want to own one of these someday…fast forward to today and a device that is: phone, computer, entertainment system, camera, portable video studio, email, video conferencing, and movie theater fits in our pocket 📱 😮
1994 (or thereabouts, given your take on New Tomorrowland and Innoventions) was peak Walt Disney World. Not that there wouldn't be better attractions and experiences to follow, but 1994 was such a well-rounded experience. A year when you could still experience 20K, but also Tower of Terror. I love Animal Kingdom, but by 1998 other significant experiences were lost. I think Reflections of Earth was the perfect finale for a day at EPCOT, but came too late as EPCOT's swan song. 1994 was the last time all three theme parks still operated under their core philosophies before everything started to drift.
It wasn't just the scary props! It was when the darkness of space cracking open in front of you. About that time, I was repeating in terror, "I don't want to be the Twilight Zone!"
My folks must’ve picked a bad week to go in 94. It was my second trip, brothers first. I remember loving WDW, but at the same time being disappointed with it. One of my treasured memories of my first visit in 1989 was removed. We ate at Tomorrowland Terrace, right before it became Cosmic Rays. Instead of a cool band and character appearances, it was blacked out windows and a big screen showing Goofy How To videos. I felt like Disney cheaped out, not realizing the amazing Sonny Eclipse would one day perform there. EPCOT was essentially WallCOT, as Communicore was walled off with Innoventions claiming to open in a matter of days. And Captain EO was closed. That really ticked me off as I was looking forward to seeing it again. Honey I shrunk the Audience wasn’t opened yet, but I remember being confused as the original movie felt outdated and forgotten, while the sequel was more or less straight to video.
Jesus Christ - Extra-Terror-estrial Alien Encounter WAS NOT "extremely frightening". If Eisner had his way and we had the troop transport ride through the alien-infested planet attraction, THAT may have been "extremely frightening". This was just another example of Disney cheapening on binaural "tech" and spritzing water in your face again. Sick to death of people claiming this attraction destroyed their delicate psyches.
You also forgot to mention The Lion King as the theme chosen for the Soundstage Restaurant at Disney MGM Studios to coincide the release of the movie in 1994!
Was Rod Serling actually recreated digitally? I thought they just ripped the foreground footage of his opening monologue in the "Its a good Life" episode of the twilight zone; cutting strategically On the word "Modern" in "Modern Service Elevator" where in the original footage he says "Map of the United States" as this is the last syllable they could actually mask with other dialog? Did they just digitally replace his mouth I'm genuinely curious about this now.
Rod Serling was not “digitally recreated” in the film in Tower of Terror. He was digitally altered, mainly by having a cigarette removed from his hand.
Why was the Orlando PeopleMover spared the destruction we endured in Anaheim, I wonder? Curse you, Eisner, how could you do it to Disneyland, you heartless monster???!!!👎😾

Ahhh the '90's - the decade when Imagineering fell in love with rock work.
We love Shades of Green. Great Episode
Thank you for another great episode. The nostalgia from some of the rides of my childhood just warms my heart
This is a great series. You guys have done a fantastic job. Tom as always does great narration.
I absolutely loved Alien Encounter 👽

Such a great series. Tom Tyler and the WDWNT team do an amazing job .
Who is Tom Tyler? I didn't think that was the name of the big guy who hosts.

Wow, the memories are awesome.
New Tomorrowland really was the best, it’s terrible that alien encounter got nerfed and budgets were cut
Gotta say, I love the early '90s map layouts with the cartoonier look. It seems more fitting.
There it is Splashtacular, Its Liquid Magic!!
Another great episode!
This was the year I was born and wow, what a year! Not a whole lot I don’t already know about, but hearing it all in order is overwhelming lmao

According to Retro WDW, the space station is still actually there at the top of Spaceship Earth - just covered with a large scrim.
Apparently visible when taking a backstage walking tour, although I think that was a special experience put on for them
Yeah, it’s not part of the ride as of 1994 though
@@WDWNT unfortunately. I wonder why it was covered up, it didn’t ruin the changed theme/experience
Omg the Barbie VHS 😭 I was obsessed

Tower of Terror my favorite attraction of all time
Alien encounter and tower of terror sounds scary

In my opinion, there are good, and bad stuff that happened in 1994.

Unpopular opinion: Innovention’s 94 was the best version of that entire pavilion’s existence.
Skipcanthropis Moronicus. Had to buy my daughter one, 'cause she got a little scared of the XtraTerrorestrial.
7:41 the Alien looks like Godzilla
Wish I could have ridden Alien Encounter and watched Food Rocks
Also didn't the Town of Celebration have its official groundbreaking around the Spring of 1994.

It was cut from an episode and plopped over a entirely new film, I think we’re splitting hairs
I don’t understand what could be scary about all star sports it is literally the most basic Disney resort
It’s a joke
I know I was also joking
But into be honest all star sports is so cheap that it scares me

Please fix up and reupload this video because of a mistake you made!
