In Gen 15 God told Abraham that the sin of the Amorites was not at its peak yet. Apparently, by the time Israel was ready to enter Canaan, it was. So the reason for the total destruction could be argued that it was on account of their wickedness.

God was bringing fierce judgment on the pagan wickedness, so it is interesting how God demonstrates his foreknowledge of Rahab the Harlot's eventual repentance and trust in the God of Israel. She too was guilty of wickedness but she was willing unlike her people, to repent. So God showed mercy.

    Joshua 7 vs 21
    Achan saw the beautiful things.
He LUSTED after them to use KJV terminology.
Then he transgressed the commandment of God.
The NT teaches us temperance aka self-control, as the remedy to various lusts that lead to unrighteousness. Jesus said it this way: take up your cross and follow him suffering along the Narrow Way.
