Ottawa Canada here, it was -28C and a wind chill of -40C this morning. I spent the last 5 hours getting all the equipment started for plowing snow. That's a task here that takes a half day when you have no heated shop. Also, -2C is tropical here. We pave asphalt at -2C here hahaha.

When I did a job in the Volvo dump truck factory, I’ve got to see the test drivers drifting fully loaded trucks on the test track. I was told they were testing the suspension, but it looked more like they were driving rally.

I live in west, ny, and I'm still not crazy about the cold, yet, as you and everyone else deal with. I kinda like it as I get used to it. I remember basic training, where some guys had never seen snow. Looking out the barracks one morning after a snow and seeing all the cars in the ditches. Then when I went to Ft. Campbell, KY, I'd be doing donuts in the parking lots. Now I'm jealous seeing you have fun in that truck. Thanks for sharing.

Heh heh heh - I was out at our landfill this last spring on March 1st...it was -27f with a -40f windchill. Trying to get our D8T and Cat compactor started after the previous Friday’s crew didn’t plug them in for the weekend. Hauled out the starting unit (400amp@24v and quick-connect heater hoses that plug into mating connectors on the machines engine blocks) and got em going after an hour.

Up here when it gets cold we have to heat the shit out of everything. We have magnetic heaters that we put on hydraulic fluid reservoirs, block heaters on everything, some oil pan heaters, and fuel tank heaters on the diesels. The fuel tank heaters allow us to run as cold as -40F. In December it was -30F and everything worked just fine if it was plugged in. We forgot to plug in one of the plows and the fluid looked like pudding.
I met a logger that had an input and output for the coolant on his f250. He would hook his skidder to his truck and circulate warm water through the skidder. I honestly don't think this is good for his truck but its something that has been done. Hope your engines are handling it okay!

LOL just saw this video and been some time since you posted! Past two weeks here negative 47 to negative 55. The first casualty my ford pickup battery and motor froze. The second was the semi window motor (2020 389 Peterbilt 389) window stuck down halfway. Third Airlines froze on semi-trailer breaks set at 60 mph ( I run a train, 13 axels. lots of burnt rubber, like $5,000 worth). Fourth getting home to warm up... furnace in house frozen no heat. Inside of my house 28 degrees. Next wake up and water pipes froze solid and burst. By the end of the first week, I and my dogs slept in my honda hrv in the driveway for heat. I got my semi window fixed after 4 days of running with it down. 10 days later they finally got my furnace going. 12 days after it started my pickup was thawed and I spent last weekend replumbing my entire house! So Chris stop your whining lol. best regards, Glen.

  • @TheMetalButcher

This cold has also been treating us Alabamians poorly. Both air compressors froze up, the backhoe doesn't like to start below 40F, it also had a frozen up return hydro line and was just overflowing the reservoir and starved the pump, the brakes were frozen so bad one wheel was spinning on concrete and turning the damn machine in a circle before the other let go. The Isuzu wasn't doing right either. We just normally don't prepare for winters or our stuff isn't conditioned for winter and everything just breaks when this cold comes around.

I've been ice fishing on a lake in northern Alberta called Primrose Lake. (Canadian Air Force training area). With the wind chill it was -70' Celcius. But its so dry that you can deal with it in a jean jacket and a Mackinaw... Here on the Pacific coast. -1' Celcius chills you right to the bone with the high humidity!! It literally feels a hundred times colder at -1' Humid than at -70' Dry

It's amazing and interesting how relative cold and heat is to us humans. I'd die in 100F weather and the cold in this video would be a warm day in my area. I guess we just get used to whatever climate we're in. Nice thing about the cold is equipment has more power! PS don't walk on that ice, it's nowhere close to thick enough.

I cannot stand the cold either. I live in SC on the coast and it has been very bad down here.

I loved your video today and I split a gut laughing. Please remember that Diesel engines do not warm up while idling. Just idle for a short time to get some heat going and then start working a little slow and you have it. Better to work in the cold the mud is frozen.
After a week of -40 weather your 11 degrees is a summer heat wave. I enjoy your videos please them coming

Strangefruit diesel is a cold running fuel. I drive school bus with a Diesel engine and I have a blanket in front of the radiator to keep the heat that is generated. In the winter I would like a gas engine as it produces more heat

It's call add winter blend additives to your diesel. It will keep it from gelling
