The perfection of her technique is just the base. Yeol Eum Son is much more. She's emotion, and knows how to convey it. She delays (but not too much) the beginning of each variation of Impromptu (How sweet the first!), and plunges us into it little by little, with infinite sensitivity, to create the right atmosphere, so we can enjoy the music, note for note... I adore her! I adore her!
She is much more than that! She plays with delicacy and grace when those are called for and she senses those situations. The sum total of her technique and her senses is that she takes pieces written by composers and magnifies them into dramas. She is a musical Shakespeare.
I agree with everything you say. Everything about this performance is so nuanced, and yet so natural. She has complete control over this beast of a 9 foot Steinway to create the most delicate shapes and shares of light out of Schubert's melodies and harmonies. This is a stunning performance.
Such hombleniss and gentleness and grace like that to be comperd to the Norden lights her emotions come trough with out doubt this is why she is great not her perfection not her technique but what she puts in to this piece of music soul that is what makes her the best she has what many lack and if you only look if she has perfectly executed the piece and not her feelings that she has put into this piece you are but mere music twit. bueti comes from the soul one has put into music and that has touched my soul that she has done that super young lady I have heard many things of bueti through out this 98 years of life and you have won you have won this old man soul thank you young one
+Randy Valiente Right on! I have expressed these facts that you mention at one time in my comments. The superior mastery and incredible technique are in the background. They are the engine. What appears though to us, is the miracle of the sound. The Yeol Eu Son sound to the point where I could tell it's Yeol Eum Son playing without seeing the video... It my opinion that's a heavenly gift .... to her and to us...
Lady, thank You for this interpretation of Schubert! You are ab asian lady, I am a german man: You have got the sense and the spirit of this genuine german music! Theank for some moments of highest delight! Juergen Voigt (Conductor of Musical Shows and one of Your admirers)!
She is the most gifted and accomplished pianist I have heard in my 79 years lifetime. Sometimes I think she captures the very spirit of these long lost composers.
Daniel Martin should use his ears and listen. I really like her interpretation of this famous piece as well as the technical ease with which she goes through the movements, articulating really well and with lots of expression. This is really good!
@ZarehDarakjian She is definitely awesome. Have you ever listened to Mitsuko Uchida play this particular impromptu? Honestly, no one can beat her version of it, for me.
I also love Yeol Eum Son. First discovered her at (I believe) the Cliburn Competition playing Petri's arrangement of Bach's "Sheep May Safely Graze" (on RUclips). Absolutely entrancing. As for Schubert's Impromptu's, nice as Yeol Eum's are, you should also listen to Murray Perahia's versions (on RUclips). His are the definitive interpretations for me.
I followed your suggestion, and then some. I listened to about five great pianists versions -- something possible with RUclips. Murray P.'s was very good, Vladimir Horowitz's was, I think better, Mitsuko Ushida's was also very good. They were all good, but Yeol Eum's was the best of all. Because of these new capabilities a listener has with RUclips, I evaluated many pieces by various composer and keep coming back to the same conclusion. Yeol Eum's playing is the most satisfying to me. I noticed that, now in her early 30's, as compared to her contest days when she was in her teens she has become even better than when she was merely wonderful in her late teens and early 20's. She has become a musical Shakespeare with her subtlety as for example, her hesitations in just the right places, the grace and litheness in her technique, her use of dynamics that is so perfect. Her performances are dramas.
To say that this performance is great, which it hardly is, means not to know: a) Schubert, b) great Schubert performers, c) as well as the difference between "natural musicality" and musik making. Ms. Son is a very musical girl and has a very agile fingers to give her musicality voice and sensitivity, which is not to say that Schubert has anything to do with it.
So you guys are saying that every player has to play same way? As i used be a pianist, i quite didn’t like Schubert because it was boring to me and felt not really special. When I listened her playing, i somewhat surprised schubert could be very beautiful than i used feel. I hope you guys are not judgemental such as this composer should be played like this. Music can be expressed in many different ways but being beautiful.

Calmness, serenity and total mastery of the keyboard.

Her playing is exquisitely sensitive and adds more meaning to this than I have ever appreciated before.

このYeol Eum Sonの演奏には独特の静穏さが感じられ、素晴らしいと思います。何度となく聴いています。
I think there's nothing to say about this wonderful performance - I just listen and enjoy!!!
You're right!

You are absolutely correct Randy. I fully agree with you, yet her unbelievable technique frees her to show her genius.
She is not a human, but I think an embodiment of a music angel.
Maybe the finest pianist of her generation.
Yeol Eum Son.... perfection.

German music? Did another Anschluss take place in the mean time?
Schubert was AUSTRIAN and this is genuine AUSTRIAN music!
Oh! The grace and gentleness in her playing, the delicacy overwhelms me!
Stability of performance is incredible!
Then, beautiful!!
Wonderful.
Tremendous quality of performance. Just listen to the part at 10:30...heavenly!
that part makes sense in a totally new level in her hands
Wow indeed, the tempo is like a rubber band in her hands, very tasteful, and not sentimental in my opinion

The fingerwork is slick. A musical personality is absent.
You seem not to know what a musical personality is.
peaceful... but ............
Se eun Cho are you a pianist?
This is nice, but too nice and it lacks weight..... and she tries to hide the dissonances.... could be better.
How can a piece of music be "too nice"?
Very slow..
I don.t think Schubert liked this :( well at least I don.t like it, the way she plays this piece has nothing to do with Schubert.
Smits, you obviously don't play Schubert!!!! This is a perfect interpretation, very lyrical and whimsical just like Schubert intended
care to explain why? and how?
oh she interprets very well
perhaps sheer jealousy because you yourself will never play like she does?
colorless & odorless
Very wrong phrasing in the beginning.
I'm working on this piece. Can you say more about the phrasing? Not sure where it's wrong.
