Played by Tsunao
RPG-y Sidescroller by Konami.
There's something about hell, a Dragon Master, Fumma people, and 3 Hadouken (Wave Sword). Shoryukens aren't involved.
This game has overworld navigation, sidescrolling action for areas, and a first-person perspective exploration for dungeons. You also get powerful by defeating enemies (Sword gauge). The main objective is to get demon passes to get past a guard to go into a dungeon to defeat some boss.
This longplay goes through the game with little to no skills involved. -

“Their Hadoukens were taken.”
Ryu and Ken: 😱😱
Underrated comment
I immediately thought the same thing.
Some fun facts:
In Street Fighter, it means wave fist. Here, it means wave sword. (The bit in the HUD where it says WaveSword says 波動剣 in the JP).
No idea why this translation went with GP instead of money for おかね
Actually, wait... Why did this translation use hadouken *and* wavesword?
Akuma : 😤
I'm really blown away by how advanced this game is for the NES. This could have been a huge hit if they brought it to the States.
It had impressive visuals and original gameplay. It really caught me by surprise. I have played hundreds of NES games since the mid 80's. Nothing like this.
it was too hard for american audiences
@@TheLateScottBaio ...and Ninja Turtles wasn't?
Well, I’m glad that the game now has a Switch remake!😄
@@ashkirby8896 yeah ,but needs to have a physical release..
Thanks, Harmony of Despair.
Oh hi there
A
Oh hey Super Secret Mega Man Yadda Yadda Guy
What a game for the NES, amazing. Soundtrack reminds me of Legend of Kage.
I was thinking that exact thing
Yep, first thing I noticed!
pensei a mesma coisa aqui quando escutei
Yess..exactly
omg I recognize some of the ninja turtles sounds and graphics. Fuma is totally swinging like Leonardo does in the Ninja turtles NES game. Then again, Konami does like to reuse their pause jingle for everything.
There's a new Getsu Fuuma Den game out now that came with this bundled with it. I used this walkthrough to help me complete it after trying on my own for about an hour. Thanks for showing us the way!
Hey, I can't seem to find much info on the version that comes with Undying Moon. Is it just a straight port of the Famicom version or does it come with quality of life additions (rewind, save states, etc)? Thanks in advance.
@@NeoDark93 I believe it's a straight port. It would have been nice if it was translated at least.
This game was ahead of its time.
The Overworld Remix on Castlevania is INSANE! It's good to see a longplay of this finally hit the net.
And now I have finally learned who that mysterious Getsu Fuma character was from Castlevania: Harmony of Despair.
The music is too awesome , classic Konami!
I can definitely see the influence this game has on a lot of later titles, such as Castlevania, Zelda II, Metroid, Gargoyle's Quest, and many others.
Yeah, Zelda 2 was the first thing I thought of when i saw the overworld map transition to side scrolling action
Wow... it toke me years searching for this game, i finish it in Japanese n there was no internet back them !!, it was a blast when bought candle to light caves, luv the soundtrack, keep up the good work, love ur content
its the same case to me after 25years i finally know the game
A true Konami classic, my pops once said he grinded through this one on the Famicom while I was still in diapers
He got his priorities right.
Yeah i remember i grinded the sword for hours in 1st level for my big brother because he made me do it so he could have easy journey later. He was like 10 and i was 7 or 8.
Excellent graphics, great character animation, lots of weapons, special feats, catchy music. Different types of combat perspective. The only problem is that it can be repetituve.
Never heard of Getsu Fuuma until I played Castlevania: Harmony of Despair
Played his game but forgot about it till he appeared with his BGM in Castlevania: Harmony of Despair
YukitoOnline :)
I thought of Castlevania after listening to the music.
Hey there buddy :)

Одна из лучших игр на NES !!!!
One of the best games on the NES !!!!
This is my first favorite game ever
I'm a big fan of samurai. I love samurai games, movies, comics, stories & art.
So it was nice to find here a new games with samurai.
Seem's like a fun game too. It was pretty enjoyable to watch this video.
Thanks for showing this game to us & playing it completely.
What else is good Samurai?
This game looks so fun! The sound, the look, and everything!

thank you for this i finally recall the game i wnat to play over the years i have this 25years ago and its written by japanese on the console i didnt finish this game because my mom stop me to play every hour then my nes broke now i finally know the title of this game and hopefully brought nes and this console. thank you uploaded
Reminiscent of Zelda 2, with the top down map travel and side scrolling fights. Nice.
Also: "Reclaim the Hadoukens" is the best mission ever.
This is still on of the best games on the NES/Famicom and that overworld theme is so damn catchy :D
watching this to completion sort of fulfiled my childhood dream. i had this game when i am a kid and i never beat it (it was in japanese).
thanks.
It took me 35 years to find the name of the game coz it was in Japanese and no internet back then. I just borrowed thie game from my cousin for about a week and get addicted to it but Unfortunately i was able to finish this game for its so damn hard. Thanks for the upload
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles used this engine. Sounds, movement (sword movement looks like Leonardo), overhead/side scroller concept.
Who's Hyping for the Getsu Fuma Den remake this May?!?!
Ooh! Ooh! Memememe!
Is it a remake or a new game?
Gameplay looks fun but the backgrounds are a bit too much. Look amazing tho
@@Ridku13 is supposed to be a New Game
It's a sequel, not a remake.
This came out in the 80s here in the Philippines. Played it in Super Famicom, really spooked playing it and didn't understand the game since the language and text was in Japanese. A remake for PC, PS4 or PS5 version would be awesome.
The music ?! ... Legend of Kage
Yup
yes... is true XD
WTF ..you right.OMG i just ...nevermind
Play this and Konami Wai Wai World when I was like grade 5, has to buy a strategy guide I don't understand a word of Japanese. But it had such good time and good music too, Konami made so many great games back in the days
Nani!?
There's some really awesome 8-bit yōkai in this game
The remake is real!
Harmony of Despair brought me here.
AngraLuna17 Same. I don't know why they added her but not Juste, Maxim, Lecarde Sisters or Albus tho
Probably because those are all awful Castlevania characters that noone cares about. I'd rather play as Hammer than another round of Juste Belmont.
HarpoTheVillain Good for you.
Admittedly, Albus sounds fun.
And at least we got the skeleton from Circle of the Moon.
GetsuFumaDen new game!
So that's where those TMNT sound effects came from.
Those NES Konami sounds are delightful as always.
i finished this around 1990...i still remember the music clearly.
You gotta love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle sound effects in this game.
Such a great game. Had great time playing the Japanese version a LONG time ago.
1:10 By the power of grayskull, I have the power !!!
Haha !
Efectos de sonidos, Tortugas Ninja 1 Nes.
Japanese Castlevania.
+Pedro Juan Well That would explain why Getsu Fuuma is in Castlevania: Harmony of Despair
Soma Cruz It doesn't explain why Nathan, Juste, Maxim, Lecarde Sisters and Albus aren't in the game >:(
Sam ZXW Albus was planned though.
Soma Cruz And hammer.
But really was Albus planned?
Pedro Juan Yeah :)
they finally announced a remake of this gem👌
Fuma is dlc in Castlevania Harmony of Despair. He even has an original level. Very fun to play.
OMG! What is this Game?
I Must PLAY THIS!!!
tomlion0116 an old konami famicon game made right after konami made the first castlevaniia, its badass, unfortunately it was only in japan, so you would have to pirate an english rom hack to play it like its being played here
+tomlion0116 Getsu fuuma den (the legend of getsu) originally made for the famicon but there exists a rom for the NES. I used to play it on my nds R4 but it's pretty hard
TurtlesToads that is his opinion on the game..and yes, you can have your opinion too..lol
Castlevania set in the japanese samurai period :D
The RUclips algorithm suggested this. I'm getting Zelda II vibes watching this, but the graphics and power-ups are cooler. The 2 games came out only 6 months apart in Japan.
if you can finish this game..you got SKILLS!
props to Tsunao
ryanc519 i finish this game in 1989, japanese version
NIce game. Its a pity I didnt had played it at my NES times.Looks like samurai castlevania
Fuma is playable in Castlevania Harmony of Despair.
You can still play it, you know.
Overworld looking like StarTropics.
Love the soundtrack!
Should do a remake
@Niche Retro and PC
Thanks, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon.
Actually, it came from Harmony of Despair...
@@Hatsunari_Kamado what do you mean

This music reminds me a lot of Goonies 2.
What an interesting game
I admit I do not know much about traditional japanese music, tempos etc. or limitations of the sound chip when it is emulating them but the first stage theme sounds very much like the Legend of Kage game theme.
This game is scary, but it makes Sweet home look like a horror movie
The Prequel to Nioh looks pretty bangin'
one of the best bgm on nes beside ninja gaiden imo. the song is sad but beautiful.
Hard limit of 5 games per year. Konami established Ultra as a way to sidestep this limitaiton, as Konami of Japan was releasing as many as ten games a year. Ultra was soon making licensed games in addition to releasing some Konami titles.
Well done!
Sound effects Turtles Ninja 1 Nes.
I KNEW I remembered this game from a random romset back in the day! The sequel was just announced and had to do some searching. Now I'm really hyped for it! What a random title for Konami to bring back.
I think they just had to dig into their database of 'unreleased franchises in the West' (actually they have a lot. Just that no one even bothered to do a research). If they actually announced a title that was well loved by West, I think what they're gonna meet is just more vitriol that are not gonna go away even when they do it right. They had to play it safe, when the other side doesn't even want to bother creating a good environment for them to return.
I wonder why Konami didn't make a sequel of this game? It's one of their best games along with Castlevania, Gradius and their other titles.
And i wonder why this game is Japan Exclusive and not released worldwide in English.
Yu-Gi-Oh! sent me here.. Neat!
ARRRRRRGH MY HADOUKENS WERE TAKEN!
2:33 Music is exact same as in Legend of Kage game... interesting, are the games related in some way?
Most likely it's a traditional Japanese song.
Really does remind me of TMNT on the NES.
She's a monster in Yugioh.
these labyrinth caves are pure nightmare 😤
If somebody would have told me this is castlevania 4 or some other castlevania game on the NES I would have believed them.
The thing to remember is that younger gamers may not remember nor have been born before relatively obscure 8-bit titles, but that don’t mean they’re unable to acknowledge or appreciate the titles themselves if not only their inclusions or cameos in future projects like HoD or SP.
I was 2 when Sonic and Kirby debuted, but I’m no less of a fanatic of either. :3
1:12:17 - how did the get away with this?
The first time I heard about this game, or at least the characters, was from the Yu-Gi-Oh Cards Getsu Fuhma and Ryo Kokki. I didn't know they from the video games until I saw JewWario do a video review about Getsu Fumma Den back in 2010. I would love for Konami to release this game on the Virtual Consoles for the Wii U and 3DS.
That's a bummer. Still it would be cool if they did.
The music of the stages looks like the music of Legend of Kage
are those bead doors with skull door nobs? i like their style
a tough ass game for sure
One of those monster types looks a lot like a metroid
It's almost like a reskinned Zelda 2, except for the 3rd person view dungeon bits.
The world and theme of the game feels like very Onimusha and Nioh to me
Is it me or do the sound effects sound the same as the first TMNT game for NES?
This TMNT/CastleVania Hybrid is amazing!!!!!!!
Watching this while playing the deluxe version since Konami couldn't bother translating the text for us 😑
This Has Elements of ZELDA II: THE ADVENTURE OF LINK... Plus, It Has Some of the Sound Effects from TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES
6:07 I always hated seeing unexplained eyeballs in old videogames, ever since a certain adventure game on the Commodore 64. I would've sliced at that eye instinctively, thinking it was an enemy.
Love how this game shares in similar sound effects with the first TMNT for NES. :D
I dunno, i always loved those eyeballs, and now i have an eyeball "Fetish", as in, i love to draw monsters with a lot of Eyeballs...
That's also the reason why i love William Birkin from Resident Evil 2 ^_^
I’m guessing this was made using the same engine Konami used to make TMNT? Same sound effects, and gameplay is very similar with the overworld/side scrolling perspective switches and the sword slashing animation.
This game reminds me somewhat of Kenseiden on the Sega Master System- lone samurai fighting demons situation.
Wait, was Zangetsu from bloodstained inspired by this?
And very recently, there has been a reboot of this game, Konami outsourced it to another developer.
The random encounter music reminds me of Mega Man X1's Maverick boss theme. Neat coincidence Mega Man's got there down the line.
Also, who here heard of this from Castlevania Harmony of Despair?
I never heard of this growing up
Me neither, but I heard it uses the same game engine as the TMNT nes game.
53:34 can someone fill me in on these Lightning Metroids? wtf? They're the same sprite base right?
Same sound-effects as the first TMNT game on NES. Anyone know the history behind this?
The similarities are evident but there is no confirmed story about. Probably both games has been made by using the same engine, but that’s only my opinion.
TMNT has sounds effects from this game, if anything. It's from 1987. ^^ Not surprising, since both games were made by the same company, after all.
Contra used a sound effect from this too. :)
That first cave/dungeon sequence, which i believe is the longest, nearly ruins the game for me. Entirely too long, and i needed this walkthrough to navigate. Without it, i don't know how i would have figured it out, since there are zero clues or hints. You just wander the darkness.
The sound effects also remind me of The Goonies 2, another Konami game.
Goonies 2 and ninja turtles
oh good, it was the music for me but I'm glad I'm not the only one.
Great game!
Sounds like TMNT and Leonardo taught him his sword attack
