So, I guess what you're saying is if a suspect can do whatever they want to an officer but the officer can't do anything back? Police are not mental health professionals. They are enforcers of the laws. As such, they encounter liars, thugs, drunks, druggies, etc. That dictates how they respond.

@@fresky5370 An apology can actually help his case if there was one. There is a difference between admitting he punched him and saying I am sorry for punching you. The apology itself can be spinned as an admission of wrong doing by a lawyer. It's been done successfully in court in the past, though I agree it is stupid that it actually works. That apology is different than admitting it happened but was necessary. I agree with you that clearly wasn't his motive here though.

My heart hurt for him. I get that he was resisting but I hate that they felt they needed to punch him like that. I’m not judging them because we cannot see everything that happened and what Curtis was doing at that time other than not giving them his hands. I just don’t feel like I can judge one way or the other on that front. It just sucks that it came to that. And I know it’s easy to say that that officer should have just apologized but that could be akin to admitting wrongdoing and opens them up to a lawsuit. That particular officer potentially could have said what the other was saying, that he was “sorry that it came to that”, but he may have been being overly cautious. I don’t know that officer personally so I think it unfair to call him cruel. Police have to watch what they say when it comes to that kind of stuff so while it hurts to say it, I kind of understand.
And please note, I can and will admit when I think an officer is out of line. I just don’t know enough here as to what exactly happened in that scuffle and the possible legal consequences of that officer apologizing to sit here and judge them for it.
If a real apology could deescalate the situation and possibly calm him down a bit why not just say it? The cop's ego was too fragile to do that.

I feel so sorry for this mentally Ill man asking for an apology. Sadly, since all state run (much more humane) long term mental health facilities were shut down in the early 90’s. From that time, people were literally just released to the streets and it’s only worsened from there. So maybe if people would stop worrying about word choice or he/she etc. they could take on a real cause such as this nationwide critical problems for everyone.
And that is the America we live in. What a disgrace.
