While many people think "Pretty Slowly" is about a breakup, I have a strong hunch it's actually about Benson Boone leaving the Mormon Church. The lyrics seem to reflect a personal journey of shifting faith and moving away from something he once thought was perfect.
"Oh is he gone? Oh I don't know, I think I left him somewhere I no longer go." - This line feels like he's talking about the church, not a person. The place he "no longer goes" could easily be the church, which used to be a central part of his life.
"The colors blurred" - This phrase suggests a shift in his perception, where the once clear and vibrant beliefs of his childhood are now uncertain and fading. He knows he'll never see the religion the same way again, maybe because he's gained a different perspective.
Sometimes, it even sounds like the lyrics are sung from the church's perspective:
"And I hope you're so damn sure that leaving me was right. Best thing you ever did was leaving me behind. I couldn't blame you if I tried." - It's like the church is acknowledging his departure, accepting that it was a conscious, possibly painful decision.
"And it started off so slowly" - This line captures how the unraveling of faith doesn't happen overnight. It's a slow process of questioning and eventually moving away from something you once believed in so strongly.
And then there's this part: "Did I put you through hell or no? I need a 'no' if you're okay, I need a 'no,' I wanna 'no' if you're okay." - On Spotify, these lyrics are really interesting because you might think he's asking if someone is okay after a breakup. "I want to know.." But from the perspective of leaving the church, it could be about the emotional turmoil of leaving something so ingrained in you. Even if you're okay after leaving, there's still that need for reassurance. I want a "no" even if you are okay bc you're not supposed to be okay and that will validate my feelings about your decision.
Finally, the song touches on the struggle of finding identity outside of the church: "When I look at you, when you look at me... Oh there's still two lovers, so who the hell are we?"
In the end, I think this song reflects the internal conflict and gradual realization that comes with leaving behind something that was once a huge part of your identity. Perhaps it is just about a breakup with a person, but maybe about a breakup with the church and everything that comes with that.

This is a great analysis actually. I think generations is also about leaving the church and he wrote them at the same time.

I didn’t know they were written together! That one definitely seems less subtle.
Super interesting seeing this part of his journey, not just as a musician rising to fame, but a mere mortal navigating faith.
He makes a mention in Beautiful Things, “it’s been a while, but I’m finding my faith.” After pleading with God not to take what he most values.
“I know the things He gives me, He can take away.” Is the anxiety he feels about losing what he loves related to the conflict of a shifting view of God? Like will god be mad at me and take what I’ve got if I don’t find my faith? Idk 🤷‍♀️

Yea i like thinking about f and r as an album grappling with his faith and leaving the church. Not all of the songs obviously. @hannahhaws6853

Every Benson song is a 10 out of 10. The guy doesn't have a bad song in his whole discography.

Não considero correto a comparação.A voz de Benson é única. E se assemelha com alguem penso que é com Jeff Bucley e Fred Mercury. Pois tem timbre perfeito, afinação e extensão imensa,do grave ao agudo.

You know what? YOU are a very manly man! Why do l say that?... Because you admit to little twinges of jealousy, but you are not envious. lt takes a REAL MAN to admit that. And You Sir Are Very Gorgeous! And don't Forget It!

Ok I've been following benson Boone since the start and here is my only criticism. He has a great voice however I work with music artists so this one is hard. It's always for me a predictable formula. We start slow..... we build... big moment then we end on the slow. Beautiful things was this... slow it down was this and this song same. Now cry I will say is my favorite because is the musical switch ups. It's like hot song writing 101 class. he has A great voice don't get me wrong but I can always predict his songs. So I want him to grow out of the formula a bit
