Beginning of the End is a science fiction movie directed by Bert I. Gordon. The story revolves around a catastrophic experiment gone wrong that leads to the creation of gigantic, mutated insects. The film begins in a small town in Illinois, where residents are mysteriously disappearing. A photographer named Audrey Aimes stumbles upon the destruction while covering a news story and begins investigating. She soon discovers that the town has been wiped out by enormous mutant grasshoppers.
The mutants were created inadvertently by a scientist, Dr. Ed Wainwright, who was experimenting with radiation to accelerate the growth of crops for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. When the radiation-enhanced crops were consumed by grasshoppers, it caused them to grow to massive sizes. Now these giant grasshoppers are wreaking havoc, moving towards Chicago in a deadly swarm.
As the army tries to stop the creatures with conventional weapons, Dr. Wainwright and Audrey race against time to find a way to stop the mutant insects before they destroy Chicago. Their plan involves luring the grasshoppers into Lake Michigan, hoping that the insects will drown.
The film is known for its low-budget special effects and is considered a classic example of 1950s creature features, where nuclear experimentation and giant monsters were common themes.
The Mysterious Traveler "The Man the Insects Hated" 1947 The story begins in a makeshift laboratory tucked away inside a decaying mansion, hidden deep within the sprawling Louisiana swamps. The oppressive, humid air is alive with the constant hum and buzz of countless insects-crawling, leaping, and flying through the thick, steamy atmosphere.
