BendDesk is a curved interactive surface that combines a horizontal and vertical multi-touch surface seamlessly with a curve. For more information: Visit hci.rwth-aachen...
this is how human beings advance, by innovative people like this, making new things... although useless at first, but may prove to be life changing for all of us in the future
It's OK. People who criticize at this level of development are eventually the ones who will mindlessly shell out for it later. Just keep developing and rest assured that you will get what's in the "haters" wallets later on! Great work! This desk is awesome!
that's actually pretty awesome! a movie could be put on the top part for watching while if you want to draw something in your favorite drawing program, you can put it at the bottom
That was a low-tech solution for a cool system - great concept work. Now that we are getting bendable LED / OLED screens, this will probably become an actual product.
@hirvikumbbaa Infact, you can use this for SO many things! For example, you can emulate a real desk with virtual text files piled in one area like a real desk, except the whole desk is a computer! You can use the bent part to pin up reminders and due-dates and other things like that.
It looks amazing! I've seen touch technology with cameras and stuff, but this model of usage is really well done. I am really interested to know about any development platforms you guys are using to build O.S. and apps to this BendDesk stuff. Please let me know about it. Congratz!
The usual crop of haters are hating (as haters will) on this AMAZING hack! I so want a system like this in my office! Hell, I'd like to have an entire ROOM like this! Holodeck 0.2, anybody?
Cool concept for sure and great job! I hope people see the limitations of having to reach an arm over to a location to do something though... makes the old mouse look pretty powerful. Touch has its place but I believe it to only useful to a point...
Just because it's there doesn't mean it has to _always_ be used, nor that it's for all tasks. Consider photo editing: you have a bunch of imported photos on the horizontal area, you drag 'em to the top area to see a larger size, then to the bend to "hold" the interesting ones. Once you've sorted that, you drag one to the top area for editing, with the tools, pallet, drawing space (like a Wacom tablet would be used), and a detail view of the part you're currently working on in the bottom area.
itd be cool to lay on a support thats between 0 and 90 degrees adjustable and lie on that with your arms in perfect striking distance itd be better ergonomics than chairs possibly
Amazing, although theres some lag between touch and reaction, is it because the software its too early or because of the time it takes the camera to relay the info to the computer?
I guess that's down to the quality of the cameras, perhaps if when tech gets good enough for a reasonable price they could do it with 120fps cameras instead, that would solve the latency issues providing the computer is powerful enough to process the info from the cameras :)
@MrRightFFM2 i mean, im still in high school and we have touch screens in most of our class rooms. there are places with touch screens in the bathrooms -__-. sorry if im coming off strong, but im a very passionate person.. and im bored:D
@InventorSolidworks the thing is....in order for that many people to be equipped with the resources they need to live....we need a generation of creative, intelligent, empathetic people. technology, especially as it is evolving lately, seems in my opinion to be the ONLY invention capable of that. our technology is the ultimate democratizing force. it makes information available to all, allows our minds to be externalized, and allows us to change the world..make it better..faster and effectively
What happened to this and the guys who worked on it ? Vertical touchscreens are unusable in practice because you have to keep your arm in a very uncomfortable position. That make it not different from a big touchscreen as a keyboard and a regular LCD screen.
@AVBtrance1 All you see is the DISPLAY. It could be big, but it's a STATIONARY computer, otherwise known as a home PC. Do you expect a tower and monitor to be able to go anywhere? It's not even as big as you say it is. It takes up a corner, not half an effing room. It could be running a crapload of stuff on there, it could be loaded with Windows freaking Seven or even MeeGo, so how do you know you can't program with this? There could be an effin SUPERCOMPUTER under that BendDesk.
Most ppl here are immature, fact is between 2009 - 2011 I have yet to see anything more innovative, only thing coming on top of this (in my eyes) is Acer Iconia 6120 Dual TouchScreen Laptop.

Great work! This desk is awesome!
PERFECT to be a mixer console platafform for any audio/video editors and studios. This is the future.
Not...
Wow. Love them curves. BendDesk. The future of super PC computing. Forget tablets and mobile devices. This is the real progress.
this crazy piano touch going to be the future! congratulation!! i want to see this video in a hundred years!
It's an alpha/beta version, and more of a concept than a finished product.
The y worked with what they had, and did a damn good job with it.
that's actually pretty awesome!

this is an epic design for an home computer, sure it needs some work but because of the size its both your computer and your desk at the same time
I think 2012 is going to have the coolest stuff coming out.
21 years later don't see this product anywhere? Too bad it looked very interesting !
awsome concept honestly i see a great future for this interactive surface.
@hirvikumbbaa Infact, you can use this for SO many things! For example, you can emulate a real desk with virtual text files piled in one area like a real desk, except the whole desk is a computer! You can use the bent part to pin up reminders and due-dates and other things like that.

So what you've done was taken the first Microsoft surface and bent it 90 degrees?
this was done in 2010. Microsoft was still fucking everyone with vista, asshole.
you guys have done something that people think only apple and Microsoft do keep up the good work and does the PC your running that with run on Linux?
The entire box looks like a grand piano :) takes as much space also :)
compare the 2018 monitor out there, i d buy this
i would do the same.
I don't know, I think this angle probably wasn't the best way to showcase the desk, what's the end user experience?
The usual crop of haters are hating (as haters will) on this AMAZING hack! I so want a system like this in my office! Hell, I'd like to have an entire ROOM like this! Holodeck 0.2, anybody?
This would be greatt for windows, the windows taskbar would be where the curve is, etc, it would be cool to see this mass produced
Cool concept for sure and great job! I hope people see the limitations of having to reach an arm over to a location to do something though... makes the old mouse look pretty powerful. Touch has its place but I believe it to only useful to a point...
omg, this guy is a genius. everyone needs to stop hating on people
@kurb77 that's not the point, they are demonstrating a curved multi-touch surface.
Just because it's there doesn't mean it has to _always_ be used, nor that it's for all tasks.

I imagine a Synth, audio editor in realtime much things :) its awsome
you got a fine taste of music, sir
Why isn't this still a thing?!
awesome desktop pc concept. let's just hope this comes out earlier than 2015.
Yes, using X10 technology, it will blend!
Cool
What kind of OS does it run
it it a custom made one just for the desk

if i could make something as outstanding as this, i could get so many things done... on the computer that is
Very cool. But still no thought about the >100ms latencies!?
@DaysOf2morrow Art, it doesnt need a purpose. It just...is. Ya know maaan?
Pretty impressive that this was in 2010.
@InventorSolidworks I assume you spend all your money and all your spare time reaching that goal too, is that correct?
but where do I put my mug?
@EvolutionXEngine
That is an excellent question!
nice but will it blend?
COOL and very nice, software ? No Edge Blending software ?
the question is
will it blend?
Is it an FTIR table ?
iTable or iDesk...future apple mac product?
I guess that's down to the quality of the cameras, perhaps if when tech gets good enough for a reasonable price they could do it with 120fps cameras instead, that would solve the latency issues providing the computer is powerful enough to process the info from the cameras :)
it would be a bit big?
I always noticed that on previews for touch devices, they ALWAYS have a 'Photo Organizing' thing.
When would I EVER need to organize my photos?!
really cool!
and i dont really care if i´m gonna use it in future, it is still a cool project you made there!
I thought this was gonna be some massive OLED Desktop thing. GOD could you imagine that?
build by yourself??
oh maaan, I wanna my desk so! How much cost all?
:)
IT's very interestanting.... 13 years later it is reality!
i wanna know if it will blend... forget the hammer..
What about the software? I think its the most important part of this stuff.
But the question is: Will it Blend?
Glass surface would be really cool.
if anyone remembers bumptop. this would be great on it.
how much do you ask for it???
The next Battleship board game should be like this!
AWESOME!!! Does It run on a Windows Platform?
@MrRightFFM2 i mean, im still in high school and we have touch screens in most of our class rooms. there are places with touch screens in the bathrooms -__-. sorry if im coming off strong, but im a very passionate person.. and im bored:D

Wonderful products!
the response time of touch is kinda delayed as i saw...
What happened to this and the guys who worked on it ? Vertical touchscreens are unusable in practice because you have to keep your arm in a very uncomfortable position. That make it not different from a big touchscreen as a keyboard and a regular LCD screen.
did u make this? ;O ... it looks like u made it in your garage? .-. .... if u did then WOW :D
Love the ingenuity!
Good job guys, this thing is badass
photo demo is awesome!
I like the idea of a curved screen. Patent it before Apple does!
I would love this as a workstation. It'd replace my computer desk.
Great music! relaxing!
where can you buy this or is it DIY?
SOLD
This can be done with OLED

It's really awesome. You can use this in so many ways! revolutionary ;)
best use as pianno.
+expert20valvehlx Synthesia
@Cremesis89 yeah you are right:D it's to "classic" and the color its bad:D anyway i think they will make the design soon :)
Amazing!!!... I want one of this in my house!!!!!
Have instructions to Do-It-Yourself?
i want to know how it would work with fps an mmorpgs like c.o.d 4 and WoW
touch screen piano?
What an
Amazing prototype concept. Minority report here we come.
Most ppl here are immature, fact is between 2009 - 2011 I have yet to see anything more innovative, only thing coming on top of this (in my eyes) is Acer Iconia 6120 Dual TouchScreen Laptop.
If you get the latency down on that device it could actually be useful.
Make me think of an episode of black mirror :P
+Betty Jardin Oh yea! that's where I saw it..
There were some great episodes of that show!
@onefastcavi Yeah. I guess so. I was just doing something on the comments because I was bored. No hard feelings bro?!?!
Yup.
WHAT IS IT
@hoboX10 Wait? Why wait?
i like it but it needs to be smaller with better tech it could be
thought of that just some months ago. now finally do something useful with it, please ;)
this is a great idea you should make this a real product
I don't know... that seems like a lot of light right up in your face
