      Why would somebody pay off "Everyone" ?? .. that's the silliest thing I have heard in a while.. You pay the top dog, the rest has to follow the chain of command, no reason to pay anybody under the person you paid off initially. Or blame, for that matter, the everyday Joes, that are driving patrol cars, and making sure nobody gets hurt further are usually very normal people like us. If there is a bribe involved, it certainly isn't to the street cops, but somebody who has an authority to sign that contract. Maybe there wasn't though, cops just needed a reliable service to get things done, and a company offered just that. And honestly, when you are guaranteed business by a contract, why not charge a million bucks for it. Capitalism at it's finest. If nobody bought diamonds, they would a buck a dozen....

      If so, everyone in the traffic jam has to pay the bill because it takes longer to clean up while the driver rings up different tow companies to compare quotes. State should contract a good towing service at fair rates.
      In my area authorities made a good deal for everyone.

    I've had that happen. I got run off the road and my van rolled. The police called their go to towing company. The towing company stole property out of my vehicle then told me I had to sign my van over to him in order to pay off my "storage fee's", from him leaving it in a field near his house. I decided instead to sign it over to a junk yard which gave me 4 times what the storage fees were and towed it off his property at no cost to me. I figure he was going to sign it over to a junk yard as soon as I signed it over to him and pocket the difference. (Don't believe anyone if they tell you a totalled out vehicle is worth less than $100, the scrap value will always be more than that.) I also had property stolen out of the van by the "tow company" (it was just one guy with a tow truck and a field). I informed them that I was filing a claim with Amazon of a "lost" kindle, and the first time it was connected to Wi-Fi, whoever had it would be prosecuted. Complete BS, but they bought it, and gave my Kindle back.

    the tow truck industry has got to be regulated. too many companies are taking advantage of citizens in need. many many years ago, I drove a tow truck while working at a paint and bodyshop. I watched and listened as my boss would laugh after reaming a customer on the tow charges. he had no remorse whatsoever. I towed a 84 year old woman's car after she broke down on the highway. took her home and dropped the car at the local dealership to be fixed. a 12 mile round trip. he charged over $400. that was in 1978. she was retired and living on her social security and whatever else her dead husband left her. she cried her eyes out when she found out how much he charged her. when she left, the bastard laughed and said she was too old to drive anyway. i guit two weeks later. there are thousands of people out just like him. bring on the regulation against predatory towing. and by the way, I made $4.00 an hour at that time. it didnt take but about an hour to complete the job. do the math.

    • @Sara-L
      @Sara-L 6 лет назад +8

      What you're seeing here is a bill for the overall time on the scene - not the actual tow. I would have refused the bill and let them keep the truck, demanding the cargo instead, filing a lawsuit if need be.

    • @jdrancho1864
      @jdrancho1864 6 лет назад +8

      Seeing how they are the only ones allowed on the scene, I'm not sure how they can charge for that, unless they pro-rate it against every vehicle they tow.
      The lady interviewed had a good point in that the tow did not involve righting an over-turned or jack-knifed rig. It was a simple hook-up and drive-off. Also, her tow company would have taken the rig to a shop. Now she has to pay for a second tow to a dealership.

Total cost for the 17 mile tow AND 2 weeks of storage? Just under $4000. And this was a police directed tow as well. $10k for a couple hours work and overnight storage is insane. Shame on those asshats for doing their damndest to make a bad situation worse!

      I just lost my entire post.:) So to recap, in brief:
      You are confusing pro bono with contingency fee. A lawyer will only take a contingency-fee case if there is a very good chance of collecting on a substantial judgment, which is not the case if you sue the state.
      They will defend the case until the end of days or until your money runs out, whichever happens sooner.
      Companies move or shut down every day for any number of reasons. It won't bother the state at all and they will never draw a connection between that and an excessive tow bill.

      Your gona sue the state (costing likely well past 6 figures) taking years and years for the state to say, any company can come and bid the road and they have a contract with the company in order to keep the road and and opened as quickly as possible.

    They had a deal with that towing company. They were getting a cut. Part of my job as a 911 dispatcher was calling a tow per request by police. If the driver didn't ask for a specific towing company, we pulled one from our book. Those listed were called in rotation. It kept everything fair.

    That's Highway Robbery anyway you look at it. The State should not give any towing company that kind of contract, the owner of that towing company is kin to somebody in state government or has something on them one or the other.

    Speaking from being In towing for a while now. Where I am state contracts cover specific areas. Turnpike parkway specific highways. The towns. And county's hire tow company's for police towing. They have a specific amount of time to respond or else it goes to the next company. For heavy wrecks. Semi trucks. (At least in my area) a company with a heavy wrecker is on rotation until they are called. Then it's a whole cycle again. They might not get a call for months. But when a wreck happens they get the call. Where a normal wreck which can be take. Care of by a flat bed or medium duty is usually on for a week and that's it. For police towing such as this. The companies don't make the towing rates. It's what ever the town,county and state say is fair

    My state doesn't have a contract company. Tow companies apply to be on a list. The company is inspected and if they pass they are on that list and the list is a rotational list. The first company on the list is called and have 20-30 minutes to arrive on scene. Once they are called their name goes to the bottom of the list and the next on the list is first call for next accident. When I drove tow truck, the state police would call our cellphone, give us the details and start the clock. If you failed to show up in the 20-30 minute time frame told many times....you were removed from the list.

    The state must be involved to reduce wrecker company's from just showing up on wrecks. Ambulance chasers if you will. However B&T is given special treatment by the city of Detroit and by MSP. That bill is outrageous and completely unjustifiable. It's price gouging and their contract should be revoked! Scammers is what they are. That bill shouldn't have been over $1000.00 no special type of work was done it was a simple heavy duty tow. No Rotator no rollover no winching. You can only charge for what you do with that truck. B&T should be ashamed of themselves for this.

  • @lizcarper5634

    If you pause on the bill, you see MULTIPLE tow trucks and fuel surcharges... including a “rollover rescue”... it only too ONE wrecker to hook that truck up and take it away. Hell, I could have DRIVEN that truck out of the wreckage. I think that if MDOT wants to contract towing companies, THEY should also pay the bill... that crap would stop immediately

    They need a rotation policy. Here in Louisiana, the prices for Police involved tow calls (local, sheriff, and state) are all regulated by the state. Hookup charge, hourly rates, recovery, and fuel surcharge for light, medium, and heavy calls. Each municipality has a rotation list. When the cops call the tow company, it's a no preference call meaning that the police pay for the tow (they get reimbursed of course) if they have an impound lot. If they don't have an impound lot, the cars owner or insurance company takes care of the bill to the tow yard that it's stored on. If you do have a preferred company that you want to use, you can just pay the police rate yourself. The state regulates prices for daily storage, covered and non covered, for all tows.
    This keeps it really fair, and if they have a problem with the price, they can take it up with the state.

  • @sherrywyllie2163
    @sherrywyllie2163 5 лет назад

    In CA the tow companies must be approved by CHP to become a rotation tow. They must meet certain standards to be included. Big rig tows are even more stringent. There is a time limit to respond to the scene and get the road open. That bill sounds excessive.
