You forgot the most important one, one so big that when this video game was brought to the Nintendo Switch, fans were disappointed the licenses weren't renewed.
34 brands featured all in one game, impossible to beat without collecting at least one, including:
    - soda,
    - sardines,
    - honey,
    - lip balm,
    - baking powder,
    - yogurt,
    - batteries,
    - mustard,
    - more soda,
    - gummies,
    - shoe polish,
    - I gave up because I don't think people would read this if I continued.
Pikmin 2. The purpose of Pikmin is to explore this strange planet, and in the second game you collect lost relics from this planet to pay off the debt. Not all of them are products, but the inclusion of brands helps instill the world-building of this place and that there was a civilization long ago that left these bottle caps and batteries behind, while showing the scale of your character as a small speck in the grand scheme of things.

I work at Domino's and the reason your coupon didn't work, I THINK, is because they were having an issue with people being able to use the coupon over and over again using new accounts. I wasn't there on the day but apparently my manager said we were getting killed with these pizzas and they eventually had to stop taking them entirely, so my bet is they eventually turned it off to stop that.

  • @BrettHarvey007
    @BrettHarvey007 7 месяцев назад +10

So, to add a bit of context (or whatever) to the racing game discussion, certain brands have actually signed exclusive deals to specific publishers. The biggest example of that has to be Porsche. In the early 2000s, Porsche and EA signed an exclusive licensing deal, so literally no other racing game could use officially branded Porsches until like 2016 or so (if I'm remembering correctly, I think it was a bit of a big deal when Forza finally was able to release the Porsche car packs for Motorsport 6 and Horizon 3). However, thankfully for non-EA racing games, there was a workaround to get 911s in games thanks to the German manufacturer RUF, who took stock Porsches, modified them, and legally resold them under their own branding, which made them eligible to include in other publishers' racing games.
And to add to your discussion of Toyota, there was a bit of time in the mid 2010s when Toyota refused to let their cars (apart from one of their Baja/Trophy race trucks) be featured in games that had street racing, so, ironically enough, there WAS in fact a Forza game (Horizon 3, I believe) without Toyotas (again, until they got re-added as a limited "Forzathon" reward).
Finally, I think that one big aspect of the car licensing thing comes down to the background/location of a game's developers. Building off the example of Gran Turismo, they feature quite a few Japanese manufacturers that only license to Sony (the one that comes to mind is Daihatsu). Playground Games (the developers of the Forza Horizon games) is mainly based out of the UK, which has given them access to fairly niche British manufacturers like Bowler and Noble.
So, tl;dr, there have been exclusive licenses for car manufacturers in the racing game scene, there has in fact been a Forza game without Toyotas, and, to some extent, car licensing probably has something to do with the location of a game's devs.

When you consider the astronomically higher capital car companies have VS game studios, it seems pretty obvious they're the ones paying to get cross promotion in games. Mario Kart probably got a massive payout secured because Mercedes, a company that just casually built a stadium that one time in GA, has the ability to be the one big exception. Its no different for other racing games; it's just that they have nore willingness to collaborate.

With games based on real sports like F1 and World Rally Championship, back in the 90's & 00's there were sponsors who gave permission for their brands to appear in games to lend authenticity rather than as marketing (since race cars & tracks are traditionally plastered with sponsor's names like tyre or engine oil brands, which aren't of much interest to gamers!).
I've always enjoyed picking out the faux products & branding designed to hint strongly about a specific product, but where the devs either didn't bother or weren't successful in getting permission or a marketing deal... like red drink cans with white writing saying 'Cola'... or a burger joint with a W brand that looks strangely familiar, kinda like an upside-down M.... LOL
And the pupper was a delightfully cute distraction in the background during your discussion at the end.... the combination of scripted segments & informal chat is a winner. 👍
