I was there, 10 years old and as a tremendous Cardinals fan, couldn't stop crying after the game. This my first WS game and went with my mom, as my dad who had scored the tickets for us had to work. Thought I'd see the Redbirds win their second straight WS that day, as they were up 3-2 going in, and having beaten the Red Sox the year before. The wound up losing 3 in a row to give the Tigers their first championship in 28 years I believe. I just stopped crying 2 weeks ago, thank you very much.
I was just discharged from the USMC was in Vietnam in 1967. When we landed the Captain announced Welcome to the home of The World Series Champion Detroit Michigan. The whole plane went crazy. It was one of the happiest moment of my life. Robert Charles Lindsay USMC Vietnam Combat Veteran 1967. Again Congratulations World Series Champion Detroit Michigan and The Detroit Tigers.
Nick Sr. knew this team !! He was a bartender in Lakeland, Fla. in the mid 60's and took me on my 5th birthday in Oakland in May of this season! The game had a " brawl " I'll never forget ! .....Norm Cash and Al Kaline my father knew best..*..Classic memory for me 50 years ago !
The story of the 1968 World Series is summed up nicely by Carey at 58:20 - "With Stanley doing nothing at all wrong at shortstop, and Al Kaline banging the ball all over, Manager Mayo Smith's move has certainly been more than justified."
1:48:30 Kaline's home run. But first is the pitch that almost hit him. It's pretty obvious that he's kinda annoyed as he steps out of the box for a moment. I heard him talking years later, saying that the thing you need to do when a pitcher throws at you is swing hard the next pitch. A text book example of why he was so good.
Notice how the batters rarely go out of the batter box? That really speeds up the game. I can't remember the last time when a WS game was played in the daytime. Also I like having the home team broadcaster doing the play by play. Wish they do it now.
Actually, Northrup hit THREE Grand Slams within a week. He hit the two, I think, on Monday against Cleveland. Then, on Saturday night in Detroit, he hit another one against the White Sox. I know, because I was in Tiger Stadium for that game.
Larry Jaster...wow what a story! - in 1966 he shut out the world champion Dodgers FIVE Times!!!! NEVER heard of anything like that! maybe he shudda been a starter in this Series.
I guess the CBC feeds of the World Series are the only ones that survive. Like with commercials for CIBC and some Canadian versions of the Chrysler commercials.
You would have thought that when the Tigers got that 12-0 lead they would have taken McLain out and used him for emergency relief for Game 7. Maybe the cortizone would have worn out by then.
McLain was brilliant for five years and then he was through. Gee, I wonder why? It’s crazy how many innings he pitched every year. But he wasn’t the only pitcher back then who was ruined by overwork. This was before the players had a union. They had no bargaining power. They were overworked and underpaid.
McClain could/should have won 33 games during the season. His last two starts (with his arm hurting) he left both games with the Tigers ahead in the fifth inning, but the bullpen couldn't hold the lead in either game. 33-6 ...just look at that.

How big was the tag on Brock with his decision not to slide in Game 5? I remember watching it and something went through me that this was big. The Cards crossed home place twice after that out,not a productive way to win a World Series.
As a long-time Tigers fan, this Series was a dream for me. But if I were a Cardinals fan, I would be livid with the cheer-leading of Tony Kubek. Take his interview with Mayo Smith. He closed the interview with, something like, "We're hoping for a victory today ans then we get a seventh game." Uh, Tony, you can't root for either side.
He could always say that he enjoyed the World Series so much that he wanted it to go 7...8 if possible. Also a 7th game meant that he would be working another day,. Who doesn't want to see a Game 7, especially to see if the Tigers, who came from behind so many times during the 1968 regular season, could come from behind 3 games to 1 and pull out a World Series championship?
Al Kaline, a true Hall of Famer.

I was ten years old as well but a tremendous Tiger fan. I'll tell the Card's are my second favorite since that incredible Fall Classic.
This was awesome to see for the first time. I've seen game 5 and 7 but to see this one was great.
I love going back in time with RUclips !
Me too also as well
So do I. Perhaps I spend too much "time" doing so!
Seems like this game was just yesterday..
seems oppressively white...and I'm white!

Thank you, for your service, and sacrifice. Semper Fi! (The Marines are by far best branch of military, you guys are just built different)
Favorite World Series of all time and my first as a very young fan from Los Angeles.
My first too as a kid from New Jersey. 1969 my Mets team won it all and I was hooked..........

Lew Krause broke Kaline's arm w/hbp that year

Wow what a game. I was 13 and forgot about game 6. And the Dodge and Plymouth commercials are cool also.
this is fantastic stuff. my aunt attended this game but i, who grew up in Boston never saw it. thanks so much for uploading it!
Look at the naturally built bodies on these players!!
Carlton brushes back Kaline and Al gets pissed and takes him out on next pitch! love it !!!
Thank you very much for the download.

They aren't wearing velcro gloves that they are constantly adjusting. Very annoying.
@@gomezesmorticia I know. Irritating as all get out. Some players go thru this routine after every pitch. 'Very annoying.
Daytime WS games were played until 1975, after that every WS game has been played at night with a few exceptions
The EARTHQUAKE series was in the day time.....................
the st.louis MASSACRE
The silver fox Jim Northrup
Not only did Northrup hit two granny's in the same game, they were in back-to-back innings.
Yeah... he was also up the first time with the bases loaded and struck out
The slams were on consecutive pitches too.
Actually, Northrup hit THREE Grand Slams within a week. He hit the two, I think, on Monday against Cleveland. Then, on Saturday night in Detroit, he hit another one against the White Sox. I know, because I was in Tiger Stadium for that game.
Harry Caray had a crisp voice in his earlier days; none of the slurring you heard from him with the Cubs.
Larry Jaster...wow what a story! - in 1966 he shut out the world champion Dodgers FIVE Times!!!! NEVER heard of anything like that! maybe he shudda been a starter in this Series.

Pat French And Gillette too.
The auto commercials are great and they sell at "popular prices."
Love Norm Cash old school no helmet.
41:42 "Pat Kaline" with a home run against Washburn. Harry had been messing up names for a lot longer than I thought.
You would have thought that when the Tigers got that 12-0 lead they would have taken McLain out and used him for emergency relief for Game 7. Maybe the cortizone would have worn out by then.
Greg Torrez, that is so true. Thats a big difference between todays baseball and yesterday's baseball.
By todays standards, they probably would've, BUT NOT BACK THEN.
maverick1956hk
Yeah, that was the very year that Don Drysdale pitched SIX consecutive, complete game shutouts...which is pretty insane.

Or the cocaine@?#
fun fact... Denny McLain and Orlando Cepeda were traded for one another, Denny to the Braves, Cepeda to the A's.
Northrup's Grand Slam at 1:07:00. Love how Harry Caray assumes the game is over at that point!
R Pryce yeah, it was a blow out, but it was just the 3rd inning. Harry was a piece of work, and a die hard Cardinals fan, even he had given up. Lol.
I also liked how he "knew" that Lolich would start in Game 7. Mayo Smith hadn't officially announce it yet
@@mostlyautumn For some reason, the Cardinals did not re-hire Carey following the 1969 season.

I saw Kaline climb onto the right field wall and leap off to rob Mantle of a homer...musta caught the ball 13feet above ground level.

The ROAD TEAM went 5 and 2 in this series. Pretty strange.
not really, starting pitching is the key in a short series, not home field
How big was the tag on Brock with his decision not to slide in Game 5? I remember watching it and something went through me that this was big. The Cards crossed home place twice after that out,not a productive way to win a World Series.

Like the Tiger Road Uniforme. Classic!
they shoulda called the game after the 3rd inning.......
Anyone know why some Detroit players have the sleeve number on the road jerseys on the right and some have the number on the left?
Likely because some of the restored footage was found in the Parallel Universe.
Either that or maybe politics...
😎
53:54 - "I guess you don't understand it, but...."
Geez, how rude.
No sound
Cardinals got creamed.
Yep. Pay back for game 4, when St. Louis won 10-1.
if mayo had taken mickey out, it would have shown how stupid he was. he should have let him bat, irregardless of whether wert got on base or not.
As much as I love the '68 tigers, the cards just plain fell apart.
good one
that's BASEBALL!! much like Boxing
