Have you ever gone to the Jungle (alternate world 2) or the Temple of Anubis (alternate world 4)?
Not that those routes are _safer_ or anything. They're definitely not. But they're pretty cool areas, and they offer interesting alternatives to the quest steps in Volcana and Tide Pool. Plus, if you go Volcana and Temple, Van Horsing can show up again.
Also, if you're looking stuff up anyway, look up how to rob a shop as peacefully as possible. The shopkeepers have a collective aggression level determined by how many times you hurt or kill them, and they'll actually forgive you and stop trying to kill you if you avoid doing that. That'll probably make it a lot easier for good runs to get farther.

5:10 ok so pretty sure what happened there isn't that the knife just missed. Rather the knife first broke the present which aggro'd him and caused him to attack before the knife could finish its swing down. Yeah if that had been basically any other item in the shop I think you woulda been just fine, but that was just bad luck there
