Agreed. It is nice to look at idealized pretty characters. And I think it can be inspiring too to better oneself additionally. I know, I see these characters and then try to be better.

Female gamer here: I hate this trend. I don't want to play as unattractive characters regardless of gender. The Dove ad made me so mad because I know they pulled those statistics out of thin air and didn't bother asking women who actually play games. I grew up with the og Tomb Raider and remember games like Rumble Roses where the whole roster was beautiful women with different goals and back stories. Not once did I ever feel insecure about my body because of those characters.

Same! It's why I love games that allow me to customise how my character looks, even if the customisation is limited, because even if the base is "meh" or "fugly" I can at least pretty them up a little and make the character *I* want to see and play as.
As a girl I wouldn't find it as batshit insane if the characters had Something likable or worthwhile about them besides being good looking but there also tried to strip all these characters of anything heroic or worthwhile so I'm just left playing ugly annoying villains and at that point what's the point
I remember Rumble Roses! I wish they'd done a better job with the gameplay, maybe added character customization/creation. Pity... maybe we'll see a reboot someday. Someday...

There's been an update on this. The guy who made that tweet has said that under no circumstance will ever touch this topic again, impliying somebody went to him and told him to shut the f-up if he wants to keep his job. Or maybe that he has some skeletons in his closet himself.
He does not need to speak about it again. It common knowledge to anybody that spends any time at all on youtube. The Sweet Baby Inc stuff shined the brightest light you could put on this stuff and now, NOW people are looking for it, and many WILL point it out in every single game going forward.

She’s actually _very_ good looking, certainly easy on the eyes if nothing else, and whoever is responsible for these decisions is *_intentionally_* making her more ugly and unattractive. Presumably to “own the chuds,” or whatever.

Even " ugliness or grotesqueness" can be stylized in an aesthetically pleasing way, look at the works of Del Toro or Burton or Rami or Lych, very often dark , morbid macabre unnatural, uncanny or ugly on purpose, but still utterly beautiful in it's way.This shit i though sn't just ugly, it's straight up anti-aesthtic and it's often done on purpose because " beauty is a kind of merit, and meritocracy is a mass delusion we need to break people out of"

I'm a female video game fan and I hate that female characters have become so darn ugly. It's ok to be ugly, but "woman" should not be another word for "ugly". Women in the real world are beautiful. In fact, being a woman is a beautiful thing. When I play video games I want my heroines to represent how I feel about being a woman: proud, strong, confident and yes, BEAUTIFUL! I don't want to play as anyone who is too ugly to look at. And I'm sorry, when you call it "realistic", that's actually an insult.

the old excuses don't work anymore. We've all spent hours in character customisation screens, we know how much you can fine tune a 3d character.
To be fair, try to create an attractive character in Pokemon Go. They can screw up the character customization so much you are done for if you even attempt to make an attractive character. These are crazy times. There are also other examples of customization being screwed up like one game seemingly taking out the loli body type for the western release.

It's not intended to promote 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder' ideas, rather 'uglification' is to promote the pride, selfishness, and vanity of those who need to see themselves in everything, and need to force everyone else to see themselves in everything as well. Looking at someone better looking than them reduces their pride, and diminishes their vanity, and so it needs to be remedied in this manner because the whole world must revolve around them. The definition of inner beauty is quite the opposite, namely humility, selflessness, and being full of compassion or simpathy. Concepts 'they' are definitely never trying to promote in their brave new world.
But most people have similar beauty standard.

We're in the s*** part of the artistic cycle, where artists have resources they never earned/deserved trying desperately to stand out, caring more about a headline next week than if their work will be remembered in 10 years.
That's an interesting point, and I'd like to highlight just one aspect of what you said. What art made today is going to be remembered and studied 100 years from now? Will there be anything anything at all which is remembered and studied that was produced in this decade? Granted, part of the difficulty of standing out enough to be remembered for Art History is that there probably are way more people with the skills to make art than there used to be, so the number of art pieces and artists are greatly increased. You don't need a wealthy patron in the same way to do anything like artists did in medieval times in Europe. So, there's a lot more competition against other contemporary artists to get remembered. Artificial Intelligence, too, further muddies the waters. But, regardless of the difficulty, it's an interesting question: What visual art from today are people going to still talk about as important in 100 years? I don't have high hopes that there will be much of anything.

If game companies are telling us that they're only going to make ugly fat trans lesbian characters for their games to spite us, then we should believe they hate us and just refuse to give them money. Don't buy their games if they don't feel like making games for us. There are plenty of games out there by companies that have shown they don't hate us, buy those games.
Also, pay attention to anything by sweet baby ink and just wait to buy it until you can find out if it's just like all the rest of the games they're involved in, and not worthy buying.

You have to understand this from an investing standpoint. Remember the Goldman-Sachs report a few years ago about how the median age of women is increasing and more and more will be single and childless going on into their 30s, close to 50% if I remember correctly. Its one of the reasons places like Blackrock, Vanguard and State Street are funding these things through shadow banking.
These attempts to change women in video games is an attempt to appeal to a potential female audience. But that audience doesnt exist, same as in movies. But thats all this is. Its already failing. Instead of getting normal well adjusted women to advise them they went to the loudest and most mentally deranged.
But as game after game is failing, the are starting to understand. This will self correct.

As a black woman, it’s really hard to figure out where to stand on this topic. Because on one hand, whenever black women are included in games it’s considered woke.
On the other hand, we all know what type of women men in the gaming community go for (white/asian) and how quick they are to refer to black women as ugly.
So it seems like regardless of what black women characters look like, it won’t be satisfactory to gamers. Maybe I’m wrong, I don’t engage in the gaming community and I play games that look fun regardless of what the characters look like. I just saw this pop up in my recommended and decided to comment and say you can’t use the tweet to push your narrative and then turn around to yell “DEI” or “black women are ugly” whenever they’re included in something.

Honestly as another black girl they just don’t depict REAL black women as attractive in any form of media. If they are “black” and attractive in the same sentence they are usually light skinned biracial females. Any other time they are very dark skinned and over weight. This really annoys the absolute mess out of me because I know for a fact they are seeing attractive brown and dark skinned black women on the daily basis but they don’t want to use them because I’m assuming they don’t sell nearly as much as the loud, over weight, unattractive ones. People love feeding into the stereotypes. For example we all know lupita is actually attractive, but ive noticed in every movie she’s in she’s made up to be sick, bald, and just looking like some little sad African boy. The only movie she’s cute in is black panther. Like I know y’all can make this woman look amazing like y’all can make sex symbol white women look haggard if they need to. Stop this mess

There’s nothing wrong with people wanting attractive characters; that’s LITERALLY what the word “attractive” means. I am NO WHERE as attractive as these models, and I’m ok with that. What I don’t do is get offended and want the models around me to look average.

It only proves that the people using that response also think the women are not attractive. Or at least they know men arent attracted. But they only need to look at the outraged tweets to know such an obvious truth.
What these executives in AAA companies don't seem to understand is: a lot of people bought into these franchises based on the characters' appearance. By reducing the attractiveness of the characters, they are directly lowering their expected income and when that revenue dries up so will the stupid ideas. The whole point of fiction is to be fictional. Crazy right? Almost as if it is in the name. Perhaps one day they will learn what the word "escapism" means. Unless of course, they would want to argue that we have elves, space worms, big flying robots or superheroes in real life of course...
This reminds me of Ghost Recon Breakpoint, a game I picked up recently. All of the male Nomads look like Chads, classically masculine & attractive, and then all of the female Nomads are straight up ugly, literally not a single attractive female character, ridiculous

Representing a significant racial group in a country where the game is made from really isn’t “pandering” and it shouldn’t be viewed that way. The general lack of style in modern games is telling given that artists have been cribbing from fashion, trends, classic series/stories and hidden gems for as long as there has been the swathe of humanity before said artists scopes.

Art has concerted efforts yes, some of them suck yes. The Renaissance is nice yes... Rococo was nice too... But then there's Abstract Expressionism, Dada... and those other people. My point is every art movement is a concerted effort, and yes sometimes you look around and feel like wtf happened? Like how all those dudes liked Westerns and John Wayne, then the genre died and they had to move on.

This is basically the “woke” version of religious people telling women to cover up to avoid causing the men to stumble. Both make the women change for the men. Making these heroic women look like men also reinforces to little girls (and boys) that being “girly” is wrong or less cool. If they were just trying to portray average people, that’s one thing, but they seem to be going out of their way to defeminize these characters as much as possible.
