Underneath just about any music video you'll find someone making a statement about how underrated the band/song is, but for once, you my friend are right.
Fishbone wasn't just funk and ska. They were metal in a few songs and they seamlessly blended genres. Servitude is still one of my favorite songs. Also the video of that is just epic!
Some of the best show i have ever been to. Danced until i threw up lol. Was at a show iat the chance in upstate NY Fishbone played till 4 am because they showed up late do to a show at nyc and still came up and played for 3 hours.
I saw Fishbone live in Boston and NYC in the late 90s/early 2000s. In Boston, I must have been one of a few black people and maybe the only black woman in the club. I was pressed against the center stage in the tiny venue and Angelo Moore sweat into my eye. In NYC, the band was just hanging around in the venue with the rest of us before they went on stage, from what I remember. I loved all of it.
X YZ ever get a chance, go see Brooklyn Funk Essenrials. saw them early '90's & soon after they'd signed a deal which sent them overseas. they remained in Europe after a stint in the mid east.. freaking amazing band. they still are!
I am a black man and my band played with Fishbone and Living Color in 1992 the Vine in Cincinnati. To this day i rock them and Bad Brains and Mother Milk. Obviously Living Color.
Death 1973, Bad Brains 1976 ish, I've seen Fishbone more than any other band 'cause they are the best live band ever. I wouldn't know about Fishbone if it wasn't for the Bad Brains and death.
I was your 3rd subscriber, you made me your subscriber. I had nothing to do with it! I am so glad that you embraced me! I am an open minded human being , so thank you. Now.., lets take off!!!
I had never even heard of Fishbone until I saw them ROCK THE PLACE DOWN on SNL in 1991. I then made a friend who had their then new album _The Reality Of My Surroundings_ and played it for me. I couldn't get into most of the album, except for "Fight The Youth," "Everyday Sunshine" and "Sunless Saturday" which is still one of my top 50 favorite songs of all-time. (I also found the "If I Were...I'd..." series quite humorous. 😄) I still can't get into most of their extremely weird eclectic stuff, HOWEVER the stuff I can get into I fucking love. And I love Fishbone. I love everything they represent and they represent so well. I was born in 1967 and grew-up in the 70s and 80s, and I remember when music started becoming segregated beginning in the 80s, reaching full segregation by the end of that decade. Record companies and media conglomerates did this on purpose. Rap was pushed to Black people and Heavy Metal was pushed to Whites. Now, while the latter strategy may have worked on me 100% - and I am a proud Metalhead to this day at age 56 - I always lamented music segregation. Music is for everyone to enjoy, not certain types of music for certain types of people which is bullshit. I was raised in the early-to-mid-70s with MoTown as well as Top 40 AM Pop, The Jackson 5 as well as The Osmonds, and guess which I preferred? The Supremes, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Miracles, The Spinners, The O'Jays, The Stylistics and The Jackson 5. I was raised to love Black Soul and R&B, I loved it all and I STILL love it to this day. Music knows no artificial, man-made boundaries. Music is love and fun and NEEDS to be shared BY ALL. Much love to ALL bands who make music for EVERYONE. #OneLove 🤎🖤🤍❤️🎵🎶
Fishbone covers so many jaundras and musical icons. Way ahead of their time, these cats are KINGS.👍 I love the original line up but I'm ecstatic that Rocky George jams with the Fish. Angelos the man but Fisher kicken the beats is a beast on the drums. LLFB!!
While I’m happy that Fishbone is seeing more black faces supporting their amazing music which I’m greatful for I’m keenly aware of their anger and animosity towards white people who supported them for all these years.
They have been telling me that all my life. Still played anyway. Now you can say that you have meet someone that has had that said to them many many times...
Funny thing is black people created Rock n Roll ha! ha! We just didn't cultivate it n hold on to it. But that's what Parliament was "Pyschodelic funk" Any one ever heard of "Death" out of Detroit Formed 1971 punk rock band???? "Bad brains" 1977 D.C Fishbone will be forever dope in my book legends of funk, Rock n ska!!!!!! Im not just sayin that cuz I'm from L.A.
so they are basicly saying white people were open and black people wernt because they were playing white music....im not over surprised about that fact....i loved fishbone back in the days and still listen to alot of their old stuff..saw them live ones in my country...was a wild night....but i cant say that i think they aged with graze from clips that i seen....but hard to keep up that energetic kind of music going old and might be better to change than try....
The point is not that blacks have the right to rock or not - the point is that skin color doesn't determine what kind of music you like. We're supposed to escape stereotypes not reinforce them on both sides. Skin color is insignificant to life.
THE BOTTOM LINE IS "ROCK N ROLL "is Fishbone's birthright BLACK'S created ROCK N ROLL no if ,and's,or but's the Black's who didn't know or acknowledge this were just plain ignorant and had no knowledge of BLACK MUSIC HISTORY...prove me wrong ...
Black music history is part of music history as Black American culture is part of American culture. Rock'n'Roll belongs to everyone and anyone, there is no birthright attached to it. Even it's origins come from a mixture of both White and Black musicians, Chuck Berry's Maybellene-one of the very first tracks considered rock'n'roll is an adaption of a country song called Ida Red. Fats Domino did many an adaption of earlier "white" music simply by giving it a swing, "my blue heaven" by Gene Austin comes to mind -an appropriation of itself "black" folk music, which is arguably a mixture of native american, African and European folk music. source: testimony from a number of rock'n'roll legends and the billions of documentaries of rock'n'roll music by music historians. I think you missed the point of the video that music can transcend "race" which is a man-made abstract construction that needs to die a quick death. Maya Anjelou, Martin Luther King, even Malcom X in his later years on a wider aspect understood it best. That the way forward is to acknowledge but not to entrench one's self in their identity. Modern Identity politics relies on pushing forth old wounds, not mending them. You have must have seen or read the transcript of King's legendary speech "I have a Dream"-live it. Done.
Its not even about rock and roll being their birthright. Rock and roll knows no boundaries. Fishbone was one of those bands (another is Faith No More and Infectious Grooves) who blended genres really well. They could be metal in one song, ska in another and funk. The lyrics to Servitude still resonates 20 plus years after.
I have been an avid listener of Fishbone since their first EP in 85 One thing that struck me seeing them almost a dozen times back in the 80s/90s is how few black people were at the shows. And musically, Fishbone is all over the map. Their music has elements of funk, punk, heavy metal, progressive rock (they have cited the prog band "Yes" as an influence), soul, dub/reggae as well as many eras of jazz. And of course, they had songs that defied any genre classification.
Fishbone is the most criminally underrated band ever. These guys are living legends.
100% truth
True. Dat.
Underneath just about any music video you'll find someone making a statement about how underrated the band/song is, but for once, you my friend are right.
Truth n soul
Damn right
Fishbone wasn't just funk and ska. They were metal in a few songs and they seamlessly blended genres. Servitude is still one of my favorite songs. Also the video of that is just epic!
Point right on love how the video starts when the BAND are walking down the tunnel at the Venue ...........
Servitude is the sh!t, I've always liked Sunless Saturdays myself.
more than just a few metal songs man
Only about 30 years late, but glad to see the living legends Fishbone getting some serious shine.
Some of the best show i have ever been to. Danced until i threw up lol. Was at a show iat the chance in upstate NY Fishbone played till 4 am because they showed up late do to a show at nyc and still came up and played for 3 hours.

Rock-n-roll is the wild child of the blues. Don't limit yourself. listen to everything as if it is your own.
I was going to say something but I saw this comment. Straight to the point without the extras that would probably upset a few people.
saw them in Paris back in the day in 1992, was awesome...the best band that I saw playing live...ever.
X YZ ever get a chance, go see Brooklyn Funk Essenrials. saw them early '90's & soon after they'd signed a deal which sent them overseas. they remained in Europe after a stint in the mid east.. freaking amazing band. they still are!
Before there was Fishbone there was Bad Brains
...and before Bad Brains there was Death.

Those were the bands. Congrats on being involved with that movement. Amazing musicians, amazing music.
Thank you Haimy Assefa & CNN. Shooting this was fun!
The best live band ever!
A truly important band. Good stuff.
Death 1973, Bad Brains 1976 ish, I've seen Fishbone more than any other band 'cause they are the best live band ever. I wouldn't know about Fishbone if it wasn't for the Bad Brains and death.
Metal doesn't discriminate. We are glad to have anyone from any race. We welcome everyone with open arms. Just don't bring drama into it.
This makes me so happy, they finally gettin their due!
I love Fishbone I have seen them 9 times
The rules are there are no rules.
Great music played by creative dedicated musicians is all that matters. We all bleed the same red blood.
I was your 3rd subscriber, you made me your subscriber. I had nothing to do with it! I am so glad that you embraced me! I am an open minded human being , so thank you. Now.., lets take off!!!
can't wait until Nov 2016, Fishbone in orangevale / Sacramento. it's been a long time since I've seen you(early nineties)
I saw them 2 times in my youth one of the craziest shows I have ever been to!

I've been into Fishbone since the mid-80's. I'd like to welcome everybody to the party...you're just a bit late...that's all.
Literally the first CD I invested in was The Reality of my surroundings. Just put it on repeat for the first week.👍
Fishbone are legends
LONG before Afropunk!
bad brains rules but they don't have a horn section. angelo moore even learned how to play a theramin lol
this channel makes me realize how little i know about the world...... .....................which in turn makes me more curious to learn more
same here
You have no idea.
CRIMINALLY underated. They should be as big as red hot chilly peppers and no dubt, they came up in the same scene
If fishbone came out now..............it’d be the biggest thing.
...and before Fishbone there was Bad Brains, Death and Funkadelic.
I met Angelo Moore at Riot Fest. He gave me a sticker and he was a pretty cool guy.
what about BAD BRAINS ?
ayzik - That's a Hardcore Punk band dude
That woulda been something to be in DC catching shows with minor threat, bad brains for a couple bucks.

Angelo is a great guy. Could have made billions but all are humble dudes.

+TrusKAO No problem. Do you like it?
I'm not an expert yet (I don't know any specific group or artist) but I'm comfortable with the music. If you may recommend some? Thank you

Well it may depend on how old you are Nick? And your cultural background!

Nick Stone You should go out more often.

Before Fishbone there was George Clinton
Rock and roll was invented by black people.

Fishbone is not punk.they arevnot close to it they are funk black people music no white kids liked then
I have been an avid listener of Fishbone since their first EP in 85

I got turned onto fishbone by my white friends.
