Right on, thanks for the unexpected shout out! I’m glad you’re on the path to dialing in your own recording process. It’s great to know the time and work I put into the videos is informing and inspires others like yourself. Keep recording! Can’t wait to see what you make, those DA-38’s are cool machines. Cheers!

DA-88's ruled the whole studio scene in the mid to late 90's. ADAT's weren't considered professional, so it was either the 2 inch tape machine or the DA-88's. I would love to use these machines again.

This video really sold me on getting one. Simplicity at it's finest. The outputs are great for sending back to your mixer, and you can do a TRUE mixdown, and play around with panning, effects, etc. I might just get one and then a TASCAM DP-02, then transfer the SD card to my computer to burn to a CD or whatever format I chose. Thanks for the great video!

Brother, your video made my day man! I began recording in 1993 on a Tascam 424 cassette multi-track and a few years later moved up to the eight track PortaStudio the 488mkII. Still own both and the sentimentality attached to them is tremendous.
In the late '90's I began working at project studios helping engineer and do session instrumental work (guitar, bass, drums). The studio I worked the most in had Tascam DA-88's and then 38's, and I really honed my digital recording chops on those, great machines.
Of course DAW's began to lower in price and several project studio cats went in that direction, later I got a degree in Recording Technology. The trial & error on the Hi8 Tascam machines helped me grasp the importance of levels in digital, avoiding clipping, etc. Lots of great memories using those bad boys!
I too pined away for the PortaStudio days of a more direct recording environment so I have found an excellent compromise in iOS m u sic Recording. I get the portability of a PortaStudio and the full feature set of a Pro Tools rig. I use an iPad Air 3, Auria Pro & Cubasis DAW's, tons of AudioUnit pluin ins, including the Fab Filter plugs which are incredible.
Thanks again for the great video!

Plus I bet all that solid state gear is completely quiet which would be real nice! Take care my friend and thanks for stopping by!

Thanks for your videos. I used to run a tascam 388 aka the last boss of porta studios but had to sell it due to moving to a house where i wouldnt be able to run even a small home studio but cos of you my band decided to skip going to a local studio and spending 300 per song and we bought a tascam da38 for 160 and some cheap rack compressors and reverbs and we are going to record a full length on it come march. Ill let you know if it holds up lol

The interesting thing about these machines is they won't record higher than 16 bit to tape, but they will pass thru 24 bit to a DAW. Seen someone use these machines as a front-end between a MOTU 2408mk3 into a 2009 Xeon PowerMac (used a PCI424 card) as a connection between an analogue desk of some sort with insert I/O snakes in/out of the console into the DA38s, then out via TDIF to the MOTU and onto the DAW. Could also use it for inserting hardware during a hybrid mix session, and could also slave the DAW to sessions done on DTRS tape using the MOTU as the master clock. Those machines are brilliant. And like you said, only "golden ears" can tell the difference (whole other video).

I get the craze about the reel to reel 1/4" multi track recorders. Then I saw these ones. I'd honestly rather have 2-3 DA-38's synced up instead. I totally dig the format. 16 bit limitation I can live with.

No latency issues when overdubbing, hands on mixing with real faders. I think you talked me into trying one again! I still have about 10 of these things, I gave up on them due to sync not being reliable enough. One or two did eat tapes, that’s a bad day at the office. Mine all have very low head hours, low like 150-300 hours or so.

Great video! I have two questions. What about something like the Tascam model 12? What's the advantage of the D-38 price-wise, especially if you don't yet have a mixer with direct outputs? Also, have you tried the Zoom R16? The advantage with SD recording is that you can transfer the individual files to PC if you do need to edit out things or compile a vocal track from different takes. Thanks for the good video.

Fckn eh! I picked up an original ADAT machine (S-VHS) this week to replace my problematic 4 track. Cheap as borscht, $120 cdn. Knock on wood, it works perfectly. Will likely get an HD24 in the future, no use for a DAW after experiencing this. I love the robustness and simplicity of the 90's gear.

    Alesis Adat good sound LX-20
XT-20 in 20 bits 48khz. But not a reliable format. If the tape snaps of your done and when the Format lamps start flashing for cleaning the heads you're pretty much done too. In 16bit you got to push the levels its not like recording in 24-bits when you can be Lazy whit levels and leave a lot of headroom for dynamic passes. If you Record in 16bit in very low levels and gain up later when mixing the noise floor will get closer and will be audible. So push levels and use light compression If you find it to hard to edge ride whit the faders. Tascam Da-38 and later 76 and 98 is better then Alesis Adat. But what you really want is a Fostex D-160 or Later D2424 LV 24bit 48khz or Alesis HD-24 harddisk recorder but get the old hard disks included. You can pickup a harddisk recorder super cheap 100-300 $ and you don't get all the hassle whit finding S-VHS or Hi8 Digital tapes.

The issue with those is that those will die out very quickly. Far more qucikly than cassette or reel to reel. after recordings you should always bounce your music swiftly. Some day it will break. Some day no machine will be left. Some day no one will remember this format. Reel to reel and cassette on the other hand will prevail. Or at least reel to reel... the studio world will use tape machines for maybe 100 years more.
EDIT: Before this digital format, there were a lot of other digital tape format machines. All those machines died out and studios were left with problems. This all happened in a span of a few years. Without DAWs studios would straight go back to analog tape.

Basically just gonna be a mix/post/transfer room. Might get a pair of ADATs and connect them to the MOTU for DAW transfers. Something to do when I don't want to do overtime at work but don't want to lose money either.
