Those people on the forums are salesmen for product companies real musicians that have distribution companies and know the income from streaming know that making music is worthless. i had 25.000 streams of my music and earned $4 now think who in their right mind would spend money on expensive gear for $4.

You're 29 yrs old & pretending you're from the analog tape era of 1985. If you're serious about analog you only need to focus on a Revox/ Studer reproducer, if you even know what that is lol

There are very few videos of DA-88 or DA-38 recordings on RUclips, but those seem to have a very distinct sound. Very wide and 3D stereo image, soft, and unique transients. Would you agree?

Sounds great if you want 8 tracks. But if you plan to use more... An alesis hd 24 is the way to go. Dirt cheap for 24 tracks at once. It uses hard drives not tapes. And.. it is 24 bits. Check it out

That's nice your board can do that. I discovered a different way to do it with my Tascam MSR16. I only have the inserts on the board and I have a 24 channel board that I use the first 16 channels for the recorder. The I(nput) is coming from the output of the deck for each channel and the O(utput) for each channel is feeding an RCA patch panel. What that does is when I have a microphone plugged into channel 1, the channels can be patched without moving the microphone and the level will not change going to each input of the deck. All of the EQ settings are feeding the input of the deck and only the output of the deck is feeding the faders for each channel. The Trim Pot is the level control going into the board. I didn't know how well it would work until I tried it and it does an amazing job. Thank you for posting this.

Very practical review and introduction to signal compression. I've used a couple of these units; the MDX1400 for recording and the MDX4600 for live work. Both are very reliable and do the job, though in a somewhat brutish and amateur way. That's OK for the hobby musician who's not planning on spending their retirement savings on gear and just wants to improve the sound a bit. They're worth it just for the noise gate if nothing else, but are effective for compression, and as stated are great tools for learning and experimenting.

The issue with those is that those will die out very quickly. Far more qucikly than cassette or reel to reel. after recordings you should always bounce your music swiftly. Some day it will break. Some day no machine will be left. Some day no one will remember this format. Reel to reel and cassette on the other hand will prevail. Or at least reel to reel... the studio world will use tape machines for maybe 100 years more. EDIT: Before this digital format, there were a lot of other digital tape format machines. All those machines died out and studios were left with problems. This all happened in a span of a few years. Without DAWs studios would straight go back to analog tape.

hey! what if i'm using Hi8 tapes that aren't DTRS? it is possible or not? using exclusively DTRS tapes is a must? I'm trying to format a 120 TDK (not DTRS logo on it...), tape in my Sony PCM800 and when the process is around 1h 45min approx, it suddenly stops and rewind... Thanks and greetings from Chile

Despite the unit being somewhat limited compared to a plugin, it more than makes up for it with this 3D depth that none of my plugins can match, and that includes UAD, Waves, Eventide, Valhalla, etc.

At this point in time, those old machines are totally unreliable, need constant maintenance, and the tapes and parts are unavailable. A cheap computer and free recording software is your best bet. Take it from. I've used these machines for years, and they are now nothing but trouble.

Tapes unavailable? I still use a Tascam 424 MKIII, a DA-38, and an 8-track echo unit. There are hundreds of tapes for all of these on eBay and Mercari. Same applies to MiniDV and DVCAM and Hi8 camcorders, too!

Love this review. This was super helpful. I actually have a practice space setup where I have all of the players run direct into a stage box which runs into my interface. Then I run sends back to a Behringer Behringer P16-I and have each player setup with Behringer P16-M as a personal monitor mixer, but I want to the vocalists or horn players to have some reverb on their voice in the monitor mix, so I have a reverb unit setup between the return an the P16-I. I just picked up one of these son that I can use it for reverb on an additional channel that we're monitoring, and it's great.
