  • Trying out some new equipment and giving you an inside look at the operations of a Mooney M20J 201 on this local flight from Linden KLDJ to Flying W N14 for some Cheese-steak. Let me know how you like the new style and I may look into making more and better.

    Nice 201! Perhaps the most efficient/economical XC plane out there. Might need a refresher on proper Mooney PIC ingress procedure.

    Like your videos. Very informative. Most others like to make music videos, yours are flight videos.

    A very nice airplane you have there, thank you for the "ride along." One suggestion, as a student pilot I would have enjoyed seeing your flair timing and landing technique - that is looking out the window on landing. Otherwise a great video.
    Thanks for making and posting.

    Really nice video...and I'm happy to see someone these days flying without those ridiculous giant headsets...way to go.

      Oh those ridiculous headsets that are invented for pilots in a noisy cockpit? Didn't realise it was a fashion show.

    I like the video which both sounds and looks cold I remember trying to get Super Cubs to run in -20° F weather at Black Forest Gliderport in Colorado.

    nice plane - are you still based at Linden? I've flown out of there twice - it's probably going to be my new home base come fall.

    Thank you for the videos that you make. I enjoyed your "Mooney Flying the Canada Artic" yesterday. I was wondering if Mooney cabin's are really that quiet, or Do you modify the recording microphone? Your Mooney seems much quieter than the Cessna's I used to fly.

    • @ParrotWizard
      @ParrotWizard 8 лет назад

      Nah, it's pretty noisy. Volume may have been modified in editing or by the camera so it's not a valid comparison. I'd say Mooney is a little quieter relative to speed. At cruise speed, Mooney and Cessna are comparably noisy but with the Mooney this is at 150+ kts. At 100 knots, Mooney is a lot quieter.

      Ha. Same here. Carenado M20J but on X-Plane. Pretty much the same plane as Mooney201er is flying here. Of course as soon as I hit the correct Lotto numbers, I will have the full-size model.

    almost made a mooney mistake and got it to slow on final....... good recovery

  • @Mike-01234

    Seemed like engine ran little rough when you brought down to idle on final 7:50. I was watching that engine analyzer the one with the MPG or GPH on it I'm assuming that is what it is? Was that the stall warning at 8:19 didn't look like you were flaring yet.

    • @Mooney201er
      @Mooney201er  7 лет назад

      That's not rough. Maybe you're talking about the high EGT spread? That happens down near idle where the fuel division isn't optimal. Once power is added, it evens out pretty quickly. Yeah, got a tad slow there trying to clear the approach end trees so you can hear how I bumped the power to get over that.

      Mooney 201er IS the Mooney tough plane to land I read some people who are new to flying it tend to overshoot the runway? What is the minimum runway length you like when flying it? I guess the sound of the engine over the video when you throttled back closer to idle seemed like it was missing little I'm sure it was just the video audio.

    • @Mooney201er
      @Mooney201er  7 лет назад

      It's harder than most pipers/cessnas if that's what you're asking. I've mostly gotten it down but sometimes it can still be a challenge. When the runway is over 3500ft (and not terribly high elevation), it's pretty much a no brainer. As you start getting shorter than that, obstacles, payload, weather start to come into question. The shortest I've done is about 1800ft. But there's no way I go into anything less than about 2800ft at full weight.

      Mooney 201er I guess have to give up something to get the higher cruise speeds. How much do these models typically sell for used with a reasonable amount of hours left on the engine.

    • @bonchie1
      @bonchie1 7 лет назад +1

      The M20F is probably the best deal right now. It's got the stretched backseat like the J, but they go for a lot less. Like 50-55k 430 equipped with an under mid-time engine. It's like 5-10 knots slower than the J in cruise.

    Nice Vid... Never put the sumped gas back in the tank... regardless of whether it is clear that is where sediment lives... bottom of the tank. Also, that container isn't very clean.

    • @Mooney201er
      @Mooney201er  3 года назад

      Gats jar with filter does a good job holding onto it. I always leave the last bit of gas and use it to rinse everything. Never had water in the tanks except one time the gas cap O ring failed and I drained 6 cups of water out of it at night. Good think I look closely at the fuel.

    I'm on the market for an M20J, so I've been checking out various videos. I'm curious about something very important...and please don't take this the wrong way, BUT, unless it's been edited out, it doesn't seem like you use a checklist on start-up and run-up or even landings. That is a very dangerous practice.

    • @terson55
      @terson55 6 лет назад +3

      I worked at Mooney Aircraft from 1977 thru 1982 as an Avionics Tech. I probably tested this M20J. Of course there's been a few upgrades since then. What I can say this young pilot's preflight check was essentially the same as our test pilots and they never used a written checklist. Very nice to see a plane I helped build 40 years ago still flying! Thanks for making this video!

      @@ParrotWizard I know this is an older video, but going through last month's Kathryn's Report there were maybe 10 or 12 of the 30 accidents a there were gear-up landings. It sure happens a surprising number of times.
