So true , I was in the fortunate position of owning a orig King of Tone from years ago, paid norm.price for it, due to the overpriced used market and to raise some.funds I sold it, nitblong after I replaced it with the Demon FX King of Drive which cost me £55 the pedals did pretty much the same.thing slightly diff but ye sounded like me
I think the problem is that we get so caught up in tone chasing that we forget all of these are just tools. It's less about tone and more about how it functions and what you want it to do. The tone will get better as we as players get better. Look at Jack Pearson who plays cheap Squiers completely stock. He sounds phenomenal.
Been very unwell for the past couple of days - wont go into details but a very unpleasant but fortunately short lived bug - but this has brought a smile back on my face. I love the classic Marshall sound above all others but don't have the space for a Plexi anymore. Like all things in my life I am very dated these days and don't like complexity in amps but a little simple pedal like that is just perfect. Not a 100% but neither are my ears and playing anymore :-) . That little smile on your face says it all. Admit it you were having fun !
Totally agree with you Dave… I just got the Golden plexi 2 this week to run through my Hot Rod Delixe and the plexi sound is the best Marshal pedal sound I have ever heard. Amazing!!!
Awesome video! My Golden Plexi pedal is due in the mail today, can't wait for it. I know what you mean by 'something's changing': I was literally really only a metal only player and in the last few years my style has changed to become much more mellow and I am loving the diversity in my playing and listening direction. My Frusciante obsession is in full force and am listening to your music and many others of your influences. Thanks for all your amazing content!
writing from Oct 2023... I had a gig coming up and my amps weren't big enough (5 watt and 15 watt) for the venue and needed a 100 watt power section. The only amp I could both afford and find in time was a Boss Katana Artist MKII. I had a Tone City Golden Plexi (mk1) and a boss Super Overdrive. I put those two pedals in the front end of the Katana on the clean channel, I use the amp-out EQ, Solo boost, and delay functions built into the Katana and it sounded so good that it's now my main gigging and rehearsal rig.
Could never be happier, seeing you enjoy playing guitar It effects me and motivates me and yes that sound of those both sounds are amazing and useful for any style Thanks dave 🎸
I just bought a boss blues driver and a golden plexi (based on your recommendation) and I haven't had the chance to try either of them yet. I cant wait but gotta say I love how the golden plexi looks and feels and its heavy for such a little pedal! Maybe tomorrow Im going to have to plug it in, I cant wait anymore !
Awesome video, Dave. Yeah, it totally works. I've been doing this for a while now. The Golden Plexi is an awesome pedal, but i recently switched to the Electro-Harmonix Glove and its even better! Anyway, great video and superb playing as always! Thanks, Dave!
One of the biggest problems I've had with using "Marshall in a Box" type pedals with a Fender amp is even if I can get the Fender amp to sound similar to a Marshall using a pedal like the Golden Plexi, other pedals in my chain do not react the same with a Fender amp as they do a Marshall. I like Fender amps but always seem to still need to keep a Marshall around for certain crunchier rock tones.
Sounds great! Thanks for doing this Dave, I'm hoping this will do the same for my Blues Junior as it did for your Fender :) I will defo check out the Golden Plexi.
Great video Dave and that little yellow pedal of joy absolutely did the job. Tone City are amazing, I’ve just got a Durple and a Sweet Cream, fantastic pedals for bargain prices. Wonderful blues outro, and there’s no way I would have noticed your tiredness if you hadn’t mentioned it, as I said, great video.
Did something similar using Xotic SL through TMDR... Definitely a useable tool to get into Marshall territory 😎👍 Using a Tube Screamer in front added tone shaping fun😉😎👍 😎👍❤🖖
Great sound and playing Dave...very nice. I play a vintage 1986 Marshall JCM 800 4010 combo on the Old Wicked Hen stuff....I think it’s one of the greatest rock and roll amps ever made. Thanks for the vid......Paul
To my tabs there is still as difference but very close. I love the sound of a GP for that reason as it adds to amps that don’t necessarily enter that territory. To be able to get something similar to a Marshall from a Fender just adds more to the pallet. It’s bit best of bot worlds without having to take both amps out.
Really good sir. I but was surprised how good it sounded. that MG sounds great. So headed to head it comes up a little short to the MG but really good stuff especially as a Fender amp player it is worth the few bucks to give it a go!
Liked the Golden Plexi. Closed my eyes and it sounded right. Was running an MXR Timmy into a Dirty Little Secret. Recently purchased the Dirty Little Secret Deluxe and yes, it is not a budget priced pedal. The folks at Catlinbread added a boost and upgraded the pedal. It is well worth checking out
OMG that blues jam at the end. If I could play like that I'd be happy. I'll keep practicing! Oh, and you've sold me a Golden Plexi to pair with my Tone Master Deluxe Reverb blonde. Thanks for spending my money lol.
hello mr Simpson, really enjoyed the tone tips. A question from a fellow frusciante fan, I’m looking to buy a “cheap” tube amp to get close to frusciantes sound and my two options are the Marshall DSL 20 and the Marshall Origin 20. Which one? The origin is vintage voiced, whereas the DSL is more modern. Thank you
Clean of DSL is almost the same as Silver Jubilee, Silver Jubilee has overdrive channel and that channel that is really different non comparable from other Marshalls. But you want clean in first place. I think Origin is not a good amp, and you cant replace Major Super lead or super bass with Origin.
Personally i'd recomend the boss katana myself. Easy to dial in John's dirty clean tone and cheaper to run and sounds the same every time you turn it on.
have a katana 50 and a DSL20cr ...as dave said, the katana is a bit easyer to dial in a good (jf) tone ...i am fully agree with that 😉 and at low volumes the DSL is hard to get good tones! DSL=play loud 😉
Very nice! I was on the fence about that pedal, but now I'm going to buy one for my Twin Reverb with creambacks. Thanks Dave. BTW your hair is looking really good today, you've got spiral ringlets going on.
I don't know whether the GP got the "Marshall" sound or not but I think it sounded good. It's difficult to gauge because your hearing immediately switches to the new sound, and forgets what the prior tone was. Unless of course the sound is bad, and then it's obvious. In a full band situation, no one is gonna be any the wiser. Tone snobs may say otherwise, but who cares. If you like it, and the listeners like it, job done.
cool!!! marshallization acomplished 😎 love the golden plexi ...have version 1 and the new version 2 ...V2 is a little bit more flexible (smoother and easyer to adjust) in the lower gain range...
Yes, as soon as you switched on the Golden Plexi, Marshall tones came across. In my corner on the internet I've got to say I liked the Golden Plexi through the Fender better than the Marshall. The amp seemed to add a little clear polish to the top end, giving a bit of clarity the Marshall doesn't have - I liked it! Before this video I had no interest in the GP, but you've turned me round so it's now on my 'must have' list, love how it sounds through the Fender. Thanks for the video 👍
Two thoughts. #1 Dave's hands are what make this video sound great from the get-go. There are things going on in the right and the left hand that can't be explained easily but which contribute to the source-tone and as any long-time viewer of Dave's channel knoweth, he hath the hands that bring the magic touch. #2 S-P-E-A-K-E-R C-A-B-I-N-E-T-S! No matter what amp you are playing through, it's the speaker that makes the sound and the 4x12 closed back of the MG's cab does give that rig more bottom-end than the open-backed single 12" of the Fender. Everything else is on-point and after a minute or so of Daveage the Fender/Golden Plexi was sounding fine and familiar. But the Marshall is basically a big old V8 saloon, and the Fender/GP is a sports coupe. Both will go to 70 MPH, but one's got weight and torque and the other has spry agility.
@thedavesimpson Perhaps I don’t understand something, but this pedal acts as a buffer for the ds-2 and wh-10 and at the same time efficiently imitates the plexi drive from Marshall. Of the alternatives to this, can this be considered a worthy competitor to the MXR sugar drive or Xotic SL drive or MXR The Duke of Tone?
I bought a tone master super Reverb on the back of your review. Honestly the best review and playing of any demo. Cheers for that Dave. To me the pedal / amp combo still sounds a little bit on the Texas twang SRV side. Sounds killer though !
Everyone always be wanting the best of both worlds like having fender cleans and Marshall distortion well shit super Dave just showed us how its done. He gave us the keys to the Lamborghini lol while other guitarists are using two amps ....Dave has one Amp and a little pedal haha
Good day lord simpson, love this video(you nailed it as per usual)as well as the earlier one about how you use fuzz pedals anyways would love video like this but with a vox amp! much love from South Africa
I know that you adore the Golden Plexi but have you tried the TC Electronic Dark Matter distortion? I've bought several under $100 MIAB pedals and the Dark Matter is the one that finally ended the search for me. Ended up getting two as a result of how impressed I have been.
The fender sounds clear and bright to me, very easy to distinguish the individual notes, more of a ear piercing tone. Where as the Marshall sounds more Thunderous more like a rumble, less articulate. The notes seem to get lost in the over all sound. Both seem to have their place in music though but I don’t think they sound the same. Does the Fender do the Marshall thing 🤷 sounds good.👍😁
It worked, but as others have said, the Fender tone was much thinner, so I preferred the Marshall. This may have something to do with the Marshall playing through the 4x12 cab, whilst the Fender is playing through its own speaker?
I have a couple big Voxes with quad EL34s that want to sound like Marshalls, and one with quad 6V6s that wants to be a Fender. I keep hearing well of the Golden Plexi, maybe I could try this at home? 😁
Cool experiment! The Marshall just has a fatter tone to me. You can really hear the bass tones clearer to my ears. The Golden Plexi and the Fender amp sounded a bit more tinny, not bad at all but different. The outro jam made my after work cold beer very enjoyable! Well played sir! Cheers Dave!! 🍻🤘
I really love that video !! It's really interesting ! you really demonstrate that a fender can marshallized ! There's one thing you can do it's to compare de golden plexi with the Jackhammer and compare those 2 units. I really love the golden plexi through the fender! awesome Dave! you're as usual amazing ! Greetings from belgium !
Thanks for this experiment Dave. Very interesting. I didnt know the MG sounded that good. I think the Fender with the pedal sounded like how I recall a Marshall Bluesbreaker sounds, but thats just from memory so I might be wrong. That little pedal really worked with the Fender. Maybe we are hearing the difference of a closed cab and a open back combo? It would have been interesting to compare the closed back 4x12 driven from the Fender amp and the Fender open back speaker driven from the Marshall amp if possible. Not very practical of course, just curious where the differences in sound really are. Good work Dave. Hugs from Sweden. John North, I hope you will get better soon.
Hi, I was looking to get myself a golden plexi but I discovered tone city also offers the Model M. Does anyone know whether it can get the same tones as the little plexi? The boost and extra channel of the M seem really useful but I don't want to end up buying a pedal that can't do the light breakup Frusciante-y sound that I'm after.
Already knew it would be a "yes" as we do something similar with our fender when we're not using the Marshall - only difference is we use a glove pedal or sometimes one of our fuzz pedals. Never 100% the same as the Marshall but unless you're playing them side by side you'd never know!!! And the best part is both are as equally loud and capable of drying paint at 1000 yards.
Close enough for 90% of us, I reckon... and no heavy amps or cabinet to carry around.. plus no finicky valves needing care, attention and a cooling off period before the kit can be moved 😉 PS Love the dynamics on the Golden Blues.
Both sound awesome but I think it’s the way you play, you have the ability to play any guitar through any amp and sound great 👍 Keep up the great work buddy 🤙🎸
Hi little Buddy, You asked so here it goes. I thought the golden Plexi marshallized the Fender Amp for sure. I've been thinking about getting one of those pedals but I think I need to get a looper pedal first. I've been having so much fun with my Katana mkii 2x12 and my new Stratocaster. Thank you Dave for another great wake up video for me to start my day.
I think it nailed it. I love the Fender as is, but it gave it that Plexi Marshall thing. ? Can you compare a pedal with a tube in it on the the Tone Master? Will it make it sound more "Tubey"?
This is exactly the video I’ve been looking for! Would you choose the Golden Plexi over the Marshall Jackhammer for JF clean and crunchy tones? (Especially with a Fender amp, which is what I have) I saw an old video where you said the Jackhammer was your number 1 but I keep seeing you opt for the Plexi recently. Have you had a change of heart?
One of my amps is a marshall 50 origin head into a 2x12 1936 cab Have a tonne of boss pedals and is a great pedal platform amp but now I'm curious to see how that sounds on that amp. I feel another Amazon prime delivery being sent to mine lol
Hello Dave , for me the golden plexi with the fender works very well , i prefer the sound of the fender , very similar but the sound seems more clarity ,more precision ,well sound better to my ears . it's a big yes for this kind of sound . I prefer US sound than British sound for amp . it's just my personal taste ! thanks for the video ,take care.
Love the videos Dave and your playing is immense. Would you recommend tone master deluxe reverb or orange super crush 100, both sound great but would love your opinion?
Thanx dave! I have a 2x12 with some late 80s g12t75s so that's perfect. I know the mg output is 4ohms. Do you run it through any other impedence. My cab is rated at 8 ohms. Thanx in advance
The Fender sounded thinner to me, the Marshall had more lower mids and bass. After all the MG was playing through a 4 12 Marshall Cab which greatly effects the sound. The fender sounded to me like an overdriven fender even thought you probably weren’t over driving it.
it does the job. iv got a 30w marshal (not sure of model as iv not played in ages) but at one point it reminded me of it 100% spot on, other times it didnt. but overall id say its the best of both worlds. get a fender, plug in this pedal and you've got 90% of the marshal sound. time to sell off some gear i think! also: im in the same boat as you, steering towards fender more for that dynamic range. you can always cut off frequencies but not the other way round.
marshall had mids the fender speakers couldn't reproduce , but the fender still had the marshall vibe that sounded good , but side by side i did prefer the marshall, if the pedal had cab/speaker sim it could nail it i'm sure .
If u like that golden plexi Dave, u really should try out the Fender MTG Tube Distortion Pedal. Not the L.A. one either. The regular one does Marshall sounds that will literally blow your mind. Then throw a good fuzz & wah into that & any amp will give you exactly what u want
Really enjoyed this style of video - I thought the Fender had clearer highs and the marshal had a fuller bottom end (could be the difference in cab/speakers too?)
You're very welcome my dude your being praised is always well deserved. Also yeah that surprised me of how good you had that clean fender sound ... sounding like a Marshall plexi... and tone city pedals are really affordable just crazy 🤪
My son just sent me a video. From his living room he could very clearly hear John Frusciante doing a soundcheck as my son lives very close the the venue the RHCP are playing toning. So he has a free concert instead of paying €100 plus.
One thing I’ve learned recently after a big buying and selling spree… no matter what I plug into, I always sound like me lol for better or worse.
Same. I sold a bunch of stuff recently because of this.
Yeah, seriously. Tweak and tweak and tweak, and in the end I just make it sound like the tone I already had.
Mate that is so true. I always tweak until I sound how I always sound lol

Sounds great! Thanks for doing this Dave, I'm hoping this will do the same for my Blues Junior as it did for your Fender :) I will defo check out the Golden Plexi.
Thank you. :)
I have the same ideal about using this pedal with my blues jr.
sounds excellent dave really good makes the fender amp so versatile and nice full plexi sound
Thank you. :)

I enjoy your videos so much Dave. Thank you for the content
Did something similar using Xotic SL through TMDR...
Definitely a useable tool to get into Marshall territory 😎👍
Using a Tube Screamer in front added tone shaping fun😉😎👍
😎👍❤🖖
Great sound and playing Dave...very nice. I play a vintage 1986 Marshall JCM 800 4010 combo on the Old Wicked Hen stuff....I think it’s one of the greatest rock and roll amps ever made. Thanks for the vid......Paul
Thank you. :)
To my tabs there is still as difference but very close. I love the sound of a GP for that reason as it adds to amps that don’t necessarily enter that territory. To be able to get something similar to a Marshall from a Fender just adds more to the pallet. It’s bit best of bot worlds without having to take both amps out.
Great playing as always dave. The blues jam at the end inspired me to order one of these to try out myself.

I bought one of those a few years ago... It's really a great sounding stomp box. I mainly use fenders.
I don't know whether the GP got the "Marshall" sound or not but I think it sounded good. No matter what amp you are playing through, it's the speaker that makes the sound and the 4x12 closed back of the MG's cab does give that rig more bottom-end than the open-backed single 12" of the Fender. But the Marshall is basically a big old V8 saloon, and the Fender/GP is a sports coupe. Both will go to 70 MPH, but one's got weight and torque and the other has spry agility.
I have got to gets me one of them fancy like multi-purpose AMP stand \ tool boxes with the smart yellow top.
Well. I tried, but I just keep watching to hear the Marshall vs. the Golden Plexi but I get carried away and just listen to your playing! WOOT!!!!
Thank you. :)
love to hear your thoughts on soundlad’s clean machine pedal ✌️
@thedavesimpson Perhaps I don’t understand something, but this pedal acts as a buffer for the ds-2 and wh-10 and at the same time efficiently imitates the plexi drive from Marshall. Hey Dave, any chance to get a comparison video from you - golden plexi mk1 and mk2 ? Really interested in your opinion on the new one.

John North, I hope you will get better soon.
Thank you. :)
Now that makes a difference. Already have this amp so a no brainer to get the pedal. Ordered and on its way..👍🇦🇺
Hi, I was looking to get myself a golden plexi but I discovered tone city also offers the Model M. Does anyone know whether it can get the same tones as the little plexi? The boost and extra channel of the M seem really useful but I don't want to end up buying a pedal that can't do the light breakup Frusciante-y sound that I'm after.
Great video very useful thank you
Already knew it would be a "yes" as we do something similar with our fender when we're not using the Marshall - only difference is we use a glove pedal or sometimes one of our fuzz pedals. Never 100% the same as the Marshall but unless you're playing them side by side you'd never know!!! And the best part is both are as equally loud and capable of drying paint at 1000 yards.
Hello there Dave! will this work on a fender twin reverb amp? Or any fender amp? TIA! More power sir
Yeps
Close enough for 90% of us, I reckon... and no heavy amps or cabinet to carry around.. plus no finicky valves needing care, attention and a cooling off period before the kit can be moved 😉
PS Love the dynamics on the Golden Blues.
Thank you. :)
Hello Dave, Have you tried the joyo british sound (as John's tone)
I haven’t. Sorry.
Both sound awesome but I think it’s the way you play, you have the ability to play any guitar through any amp and sound great 👍
Keep up the great work buddy 🤙🎸
Thank you. :)
Thank you. :)
A very interesting question
sounds amazing
Thank you. :)
I think it nailed it. I love the Fender as is, but it gave it that Plexi Marshall thing.
? Can you compare a pedal with a tube in it on the the Tone Master? Will it make it sound more "Tubey"?
Sounds good to me I agree with you Dave!🎸
Thank you. :)
This is exactly the video I’ve been looking for! Would you choose the Golden Plexi over the Marshall Jackhammer for JF clean and crunchy tones? (Especially with a Fender amp, which is what I have)
I saw an old video where you said the Jackhammer was your number 1 but I keep seeing you opt for the Plexi recently. Have you had a change of heart?
You can't go wrong with either to be honest but my favourite is the jackhammer.
its so cool if you want a fender clean and a marshal distortion
If you have a twin reverb where would you put the middle on?
10
King Dave, I have a question for you. What do I need to crank my amp up , yet keep it at apartment friendly. I want the balls from jcm 800 cranked.
An attenuator. :)
@@thedavesimpson thanks Dave 🤘
One of my amps is a marshall 50 origin head into a 2x12 1936 cab
Have a tonne of boss pedals and is a great pedal platform amp but now I'm curious to see how that sounds on that amp.
Thank you. :)
Love the videos Dave and your playing is immense. Would you recommend tone master deluxe reverb or orange super crush 100, both sound great but would love your opinion?
Thank you and Id recommend either. The orange is more versatile though. :)
@@thedavesimpson thanks for the reply 😁 please keep the amazing videos coming
What speakers you running the marshall through? Sounded awesome at the beginning! Need to buy an mg I think haha
Celestion g12 75s.
Thanx dave! I have a 2x12 with some late 80s g12t75s so that's perfect. I know the mg output is 4ohms. Do you run it through any other impedence. My cab is rated at 8 ohms. Thanx in advance
The Marshall rig gets my vote 👍
The Fender sounded thinner to me, the Marshall had more lower mids and bass. After all the MG was playing through a 4 12 Marshall Cab which greatly effects the sound. The fender sounded to me like an overdriven fender even thought you probably weren’t over driving it.
This! Is! Amazeballs! Love the sound, you can call it whatever you like, just delicious!
Thank you. :)
@@thedavesimpson You are welcome mate!😎
Dave have you ever tried one of the Marshall Origin series amps?
Yeps. I have a video with one. :)
Would the marshall jackhammer in a fender deluxe reverb give a plexi sound?
Yeps. :)
it does the job. iv got a 30w marshal (not sure of model as iv not played in ages) but at one point it reminded me of it 100% spot on, other times it didnt. but overall id say its the best of both worlds. get a fender, plug in this pedal and you've got 90% of the marshal sound. time to sell off some gear i think! also: im in the same boat as you, steering towards fender more for that dynamic range. you can always cut off frequencies but not the other way round.
Dave, what that MG head model?
Mg100 hdfx
It's incredible how good it sounds. Thank you!
Sounds great, good pedal, those Fender amps take pedals very well!!
Love your stuff, great video. Have a golden plexi, best thirty bucks ever spent on gear lol!
marshall had mids the fender speakers couldn't reproduce , but the fender still had the marshall vibe that sounded good , but side by side i did prefer the marshall, if the pedal had cab/speaker sim it could nail it i'm sure .
GREAT SOUND GREAT PLAYING
Thank you. :)
If u like that golden plexi Dave, u really should try out the Fender MTG Tube Distortion Pedal. Not the L.A. one either. The regular one does Marshall sounds that will literally blow your mind. Then throw a good fuzz & wah into that & any amp will give you exactly what u want
I just went straight to eBay and bought the pedal, great job.
Thank you. :)
It would be interesting to hear it through a Fender Bassbreaker which is a little more suited to gain
I love a good experiment too 😬😬
My gut feeling is that the golden plexi in front of the Fender Jimi tone sounded closer to his tone than straight into the Marshall
Dave, you need to try the Blond Tone Master Twin with celestion speakers!
Indeedy I do. :)
i think this solidified my decision to buy a golden plexi.
Really enjoyed this style of video - I thought the Fender had clearer highs and the marshal had a fuller bottom end (could be the difference in cab/speakers too?)
Thank you for watching. :)
Not a far comparison.. you only used single coils..Would you mind grabbing one of your humbucker guitars. Please ? thanks..
Good stuff as always
Thank you. :)
You're very welcome my dude your being praised is always well deserved. Also yeah that surprised me of how good you had that clean fender sound ... sounding like a Marshall plexi... and tone city pedals are really affordable just crazy 🤪
Not quite the saturation but damn close. Going from angelic to devil in one foot step !
An admirable goal, having gorgeous fender cleans and filthy marshall gain sound in one amp.
What Marshall is that, I have not seen a MG that looks like that???
Its been rehoused.
I love your playing!
Thank you. :)
Dave what about the Marshall DSL HR 100 Watt Head?
I'm personally not a fan of the dsls.
Me thinks if you could find a way to fatten that tone up a bit before throwing it through the GP, you'd be getting a lot closer to the Marshall sound!
is joyo and behringer vintage overdrive pedals good for getting john frusciante's tone ? Have u ever used one of them
I've never tried them so I can't say. Sorry.
I could really hear that the MG was using the 4x12 and the Fender had the open back 1x12.
Those Amps sound good Dave👍🆒
Indoodles. :)
My son just sent me a video. From his living room he could very clearly hear John Frusciante doing a soundcheck as my son lives very close the the venue the RHCP are playing toning. So he has a free concert instead of paying €100 plus.
