The easy way for me to remember how boards cup as they dry is that the 'growth rings try to go straight'. It's a simple rule that lets you know exactly how the board will cup.
Some really helpful info. Knowing what cut of the log to use for specific parts can make the difference between a nice piece and a great piece. Thanks.
Great explanation and demonstration Rob. It’s good to see you on RUclips. I hope all is well with you and your family. FYI - I’ve been off my woodworking channel and out of my shop since January. Pam and I have both been sick but we’re fine now. When she was sidelined I was very busy filling in for her and really too concerned to concentrate of fast spinning blades. I’ve also started a technology RUclips channel that’s taken quite a bit of my time. This week was my first back in the shop and I’m now in the process of editing two woodworking videos. I’m now eager to get back into the shop and produce some projects.
Hey Rob! Long time, no see. Hope all is well and you and your family are doing great. This was a great explanation of different cuts of lumber and their pros and cons. We're looking forward to more great videos from you in the future.
Explained to an old man that did not know this, and was extremely fascinating. When I could buy lumber, the price always won out. Now I can't buy lumber since I am in hospice and am terminal due to primary liver cancer.😢

Thanks for letting me know that I don’t always have to raise the grain.

May God bless you.
Very interesting.
My most important consideration in choosing timber is how long has it been in the gutter and has it rained a lot recently? :P hahaha
Here in northern California logs are still felled by men with chainsaws. Our trees are to big for machines to tackle.
Why does this guy always look so annoyed at something when he's talking? It's so annoying!
