In a moment of mental depression & anxiety, Ying Ying killed the baby, yes she was angry, but also sad, but as she said "I took from him the only thing I knew that I could." She thought about hurting her husband, but the baby was an easy target...It was just a mental moment of going crazy, but she never ment to hurt the baby as we saw once she picked him up and started crying her eyes out and realizing what she did....Not to mention Ying Ying having mental issues later..SAD, BUT GREAT MOVIE!!!
For this pre-war scene set in Shanghai, you would have thought they would have used the original version of "Evening Primrose" sung by Zhou Xuan. I love Teresa Teng, but Zhou Xuan had the best version.
I know it as Ye Lai Xiang (probably the same name - sadly I don't know any chinese!)but its sung by teresa teng. I shouldnt say this but I downloaded it off limewire...
It's called "Evening Primrose". I actually love this song so much, I spent a long time trying to find it. There are many beautiful versions of it, but I couldn't find this particular one.

The main characters "I see you" talk with her mother in the kitchen was a tearfest for me!
I loved the book! I wish they elaborated on this scene more but the movie does a spectacular job.
