    I have no reason to watch a different film on the Hood. This is and will always be a classic. It is like a great Monet painting. You cannot make it any better. It stands alone and will last for generations to come. I enjoy re-visiting the film. just like I re-visit a great painting.

    "In the classic 1938 Errol Flynn film "The Adventures of Robin Hood," the producers wanted a realistic 'look' when people were killed by arrows. Instead of SFX or editing tricks, they just hired an expert archer to shoot extras wearing padding. Extras were paid $150 each time they were shot."

    Forget CGI, the problems with today's movies are (1) they're too dark - the writers have zero sense of humor (see the recent Robin Hood); (2) they're shot like music videos, with cameras seemingly held by drunks and shots cutting every two seconds; and (3) excessive product placement - it's not enough that films make millions and millions from tickets, producers' greed is insatiable. CGI can be used effectively if not shoved in your face; it's the style, not the technique, that makes or breaks.

    The fact that they used real arrows against people who were often running shows a lot of guts on the part of the stuntmen! Howard Hill was the name of the archer who did all of the trick shots. According to a old newspaper article from The Daily Times (Davenport Iowa) April 6, 1938 This scene at 01:28 was the first one filmed with Sol Gorss as the stuntman who plays the guard who gets shot. It was the first time it was done and they weren't 100% certain Hill could hit the small metal plate under Gorss's costume while he was running. This led to the fear on Gorss's character face to be more than just acting since it wasn't know how this was going to turn out.

Errol Flynn learned many of his acting skills at Northampton Rep theatre Company about 60 miles from Nottingham... ...I wonder if they ever talked about "The old days" when they became rich & famous in their Hollywood heyday!

    • @kgatch113a
      @kgatch113a 2 года назад +1

      Actually you are wrong. There are plenty of historical accounts where chain protected a man perfectly well against a long bow.....at long range. But within 60 yards and closer, even plate could be pierced, until the Italians made better plate armor and used it at Verneiul.

  • @bgdancer100

    On account of mail armor actually works pretty well against a cutting blow from a sword. The main problems were that it was flexible, meaning that blunt force weapons like axes and maces could break bones underneath the armor, and that it was garbage against piercing weapons, like spears and arrows.

    gjm1953 I suspect they are wearing chainmail to fit the period. Why aren't they all wearing plate armor, you might ask? Well, it was expensive as hell, probably not something you'd outfit all your grunts with (these guys are clearly grunts). Another aspect of it is that an arrow with a bodkin (really big, pointy strong arrow head) fired from a high-power bow, can go through a LOT of stuff. Chainmail is for protection against cuts and works pretty well for that.

    • @AngeliaSparrow
      @AngeliaSparrow 9 лет назад +2

      Sparrowhawk Also, the year is somewhere between 1189 and 1200. Plate armor didn't come into common use, even in piecemeal form until the late 13th century, about 70 years later. Full plate was not developed until about 1420.

      Spot on, Thought Plate armour starts to appear piecemeal in early fourteen century and reached its heyday during the early 15th century. There is an interesting suggestion that in some countries particularly France, the drive to develop Plate Armour is driven by the desire to come up with an effective defence for Knights against that great knight killer, English Longbowmen, whose steel tipped bodkin arrows were able to penetrate all types of armour in use at that time, be they mail or a combination of plate and mail.

    • @Dakers11

      I think chain mail was for close quarter fighting that, if an opponent struck you with an indirect blow or a sword slash to the shoulder or arm .You could endure and keep fighting. Hopefully to prevail. But, remember arrows produce a considerable force to a pinpoint on the chain mail at a distance !. So penetration would likely be severe.

    الله الله : بالعدل والأمانة والإنصاف لهذه " السينما العالمية الرائعة والجميلة " التي تقدم كل ما هو جميل ورائع حتى ولو حساب أديانها وقادتها .
    فقارن هنا في هذا الفيلم صورة " عودة الملك : ريتشارد " إلى وطنه متخفياً ومعه قادته - بعبائة النساء - خجلاً من قومه أن يروه بعد الهزيمة من القائد الفاتح الإسلامي : صلاح الدين الأيوبي ، حتى عندما سأله روبن فقال : لماذا تركتنا وذهبت للقتال ؟ فقال الملك ريتشارد : لو كنت أعلم لما ذهبت للقتال - وذلك بعدما رآه من صيحات وصولات القادة الفاتحين المسلمين للفرنجة وغيرهم من : هزيمتهم وقتلهم وتشريدهم "
    وبين الفيلم المصري " الناصر صلاح الدين " الذي صور هناك صورة " الملك الفرنجي : ريتشارد " وأعطاه في الفيلم لقب " قلب الأسد "
